Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can be President. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear no T-shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station because this one's just too icky. You don't have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress - $200,000; suit rental - $1000. People never stare at your chest when you're talking to them. The occasional well-rendered belch is practically expected. New shoes don't cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood, ALL the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $30 for a three-pack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. Your belly usually hides your big hips. One wallet and one pair of shoes, one colour, all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can "do" your nails with a pocketknife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache. You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives, on December 24th, in 45 minutes. NO WONDER MEN ARE HAPPIER! +++++++++ NOTICES PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO This letter brings you details of our next five events, an AGM and four concerts. E-mail subscribers will receive further news and reminders but we’re sure that you will appreciate that the outrageous cost of postage (and stationery!) means that we have to keep snail-mail notifications down to an absolute minimum! In summary the events are as follows: • Wednesday 3 August ~ 1.10 p.m. Annual General Meeting at the Bulawayo Club • Tuesday 17 August ~ 7.30 p.m. Leslie Howard (piano) • Wednesday 25 August ~ N.B. 5.15 p.m! Leslie Howard (piano) • Saturday 28 August ~ 7.30 p.m. Leslie Howard & Michael Brownlee Walker (piano duet) • Thursday 16 September ~ 7.30 p.m. Piers Lane (piano) All concerts will be in the Sibson Hall and booking will be at Meikles - for Leslie Howard’s two 7.30 concerts from Monday 2 August and for Piers Lane’s concert from Monday 30 August. There will be no advance booking for Leslie’s 5.15 concert. More reminders nearer the time!... +++++ Performing Arts Bulawayo presents three concerts featuring LESLIE HOWARD: Tuesday 17 August ~ 7.30 pm : Leslie Howard (piano) Beethoven: Fifteen Variations and Fugue in E flat major, Opus 35 “Eroica” Grieg: Sonata in E minor, Opus 7 Mozart: Sonata in D major, KV311 Chopin: Three Mazurkas, Opus 59 Rachmaninov: Variations on a theme of Corelli, Opus 42 BOOKING AT MEIKLES Wednesday 25 August ~ N.B. 5.15 pm! Leslie Howard (piano) A short early-evening recital and the programme will be finalised nearer the time but it will include Liszt’s spectacular Reminiscences of Meyerbeer’s ‘Huguenots”! Seating will be unreserved and admission at the door. Saturday 28 August ~ 7.30 pm : Leslie Howard & Michael Brownlee Walker (piano duet) Beethoven: Three Marches, Opus 45 Mendelssohn: Variations in B flat major, Opus 81 Rubinstein: Sonata in D major, Opus 89 Schubert: Allegro in A minor - Lebensstürme, D947 Rachmaninov: Six Morceaux, Opus 11 BOOKING AT MEIKLES This will be Leslie Howard’s EIGHTH visit to Bulawayo and perhaps we begin to take him for granted! It’s worth remembering that he performs worldwide with renowned conductors and orchestras in the most prestigious venues and has a staggering repertoire of over 100 concerti. Indeed, he commands perhaps the largest repertoire of any pianist who ever lived and certainly at over 130 recordings has the largest discography of any pianist in recording history. We are very fortunate that he has developed such a love of Zimbabwe that he keeps returning. The PAB Annual General Meeting will take place at the Bulawayo Club on Wednesday 3 August at 1.10 p.m. ========== EXCITING NEWS OF A YOUNG BULAWAYO MAN WHO HAS EXCELLED IN HIS FIELD Michael Brownlee Walker was born in Kariba, Zimbabwe in 1977. He had started piano lessons at primary school but it wasn’t until he entered Plumtree School in 1990 that he began in earnest – under the guidance of Felix Westwood. A few years later he started lessons in composition, and later piano, with Derek Hudson at the Zimbabwe Academy of Music in Bulawayo. Whilst a student there Michael tried learning several instruments and finally settled with the oboe – learning with Pat Pearce. During his time at the Academy he was awarded the President’s Music Fund bursary several times and performed in the Robert Sibson Hall on many occasions. In 1996 he was invited by John Hodgson to participate in the Zimbabwe Society of Music Teachers (ZMST) National Student Tour. In 1996, at the invitation of the renowned British pianist Leslie Howard, Michael moved to London to continue his musical studies. He also started lessons in conducting at Morley College with Lawrence Leonard. The following year, as a result of his performance in the Associated Board Advanced Certificate, Michael won a much-coveted Associated Board scholarship that enabled him to enroll on a four-year undergraduate degree course at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. During his time there his teachers were Ka-Kit Tam, Paul Janes and Margaret Fingerhut. He has appeared as soloist and accompanist in masterclasses given by Martin Roscoe, Kathryn Stott, Arnaldo Cohen, Ralph Kirschbaum, Ian Partridge, Joan Rodgers and Roger Vignoles. Since leaving college Michael has been active as a pianist around Britain. In 2003 he was awarded a grant from the Geoffrey Parsons Trust for work in the field of accompaniment. He is regularly invited to accompany at the Britten-Pears School in Snape, Suffolk, and is often asked to take part in summer music courses. In August he is an official accompanist at Abingdon School for Vocal Studies in Oxfordshire. Michael is a tutor in piano at several schools in London including the London Oratory School. +++++++++ Clive Midlane P O Box AC 1278 Ascot Bulawayo PH: (H) 285859 (Cell) 091 351416 23 July 2004 REF: BLUE CROSS DONATION Blue Cross, Africa’s longest regular ultra-endurance fixture, is an annual 500 kilometre journey staged since 1996 for cyclists and walkers between the lowest and highest points of Zimbabwe – from Mahenye at the Save – Runde river confluence, 150 meters above sea level to the summit of Mount Nyangani at an altitude of 2593 metres. Once again I have decided to undertake this unrivaled challenge and raise as much money as I can for the survival of our S.P.C.A.’s . I will be doing the cycle division, (road and mountain bike combination) which is five stages (9th to 13th August) varying from 68 to 158 kilometres a day. Due to the terrible situation in our country, the S.P.C.A. are carrying out an incredible task of looking after the countries wild life and domestic animals, therefore, it is imperative that we do not let this magnificent organization fold. Last year, I raised $5 million, and was awarded the Gold medal. This year my target is to raise $20 million and I have organised that all my donations are going to Bulawayo S.P.C.A. Please give as bounteously as you can. Cheques must be payable to “Blue Cross” and posted to the above address. Many, many thanks for your support Best Regards MR C.S. We the Management, Instructors and Staff at Muscles and Curves would like to thank you all for your kind support in the “HELP THE ELDERLY’ drive for the month of June, with both monetary and grocery goods which have included potatoes, tomatoes, eggs, sweets, biscuits, oranges, soup powders and sugar. We made up 30 parcels of the perishables and distributed them to those on the “SOAP”( Support Old Aged Pensioners) list at coronation cottages. Those who received the packages were so grateful; (even though the package was small) it was worth the time and effort just to see the appreciation on their faces. We have raised $ 2 000 000.00 ( two million) in cash. This cash was handed over to SOAP, who does a wonderful job in caring for our old aged pensioners. Thank you all again and again for all your support and warm concern for the elderly; we hope that you will be generous next month and for as long as we are able on a monthly basis. Please note that the list of donors is available should you wish to look at it as many have asked to be anonymous. A special thank you to you, Mags, for everything you continue to do for the community! +++++++++++ name: Martin Stewart-Smith email: martin.stewartsmith@btinternet.com phone: +44 207 422 4686 I was born in Darwendale, grew up in Salisbury, went to Oriel Boys in Chispite (but lived in Dulwich Close, not far from the Kamfimsa Shoping Centre in Greendale) but then left Rhodesia in 1976 at the age of 14 to go to a Scottish boarding school. I have not been back since. I am now 43 years old and getting keen and nostalgic about making a trip back to Zimbabwe to visit all my childhood places so many many years later. Problem is that all the people I know have long since left the country (or at least I think they have). I would like to visit but don't know if its best to just stay at a hotel (eg. Meikles - does it still even exist??) or to stay with (and of course pay in US dollars or pounds or whatever) a local family, hire a car etc. Can you let me know what you recommend?
