'CLEVER' IS MY FAVOURITE STREET KID. CLEVER HANGS OUT IN THE BACK OF A SMART 4X4 TRUCK IN JASON MOYO AVENUE ALONG WITH A NUMBER OF OTHER YOUNG LADS. (I WONDER WHOSE CAR IT IS, IS IT THEIR CAR OR DO THEY GET FREE SEATING IN EXCHANGE FOR GUARDING THIS RATHER NICE MOTORING PIECE ?) THE OTHER STREET KIDS ALL KNOW THAT I ONLY DEAL WITH CLEVER AND THEY LEAVE ME ALONE AND DON'T BOTHER ME IN THE LEAST. CLEVER LIVES UP TO HIS NAME, HE IS INNOVATIVE, BRIGHT AND FRIENDLY WITHOUT BEING PUSHY. HE HAD THE BRIGHT IDEA OF 'PURLOINING' A CAN OF BLACK SHOE POLISH AND WILL BUFF YOUR TYRES REALLY NICE AND BLACK IF YOU LET HIM. IN FACT HIS NAME SHOULD BE "COLGATE" BECAUSE HE HAS A SET OF DENTURES A FILM STAR WOULD BE PROUD OF. NO DENTIST WILL EVER NEED TO GO ANYWHERE NEAR CLEVER'S MAGNIFICENT MOLARS. CLEVER DOES NOT WANT TO BE A STREET KID, HE AT LEAST HAS ASPIRATIONS UNLIKE SOME OF THE OTHERS. HE WOULD LIKE A PERMANENT JOB AND A LITTLE ESTEEM IN THE COMMUNITY. JAYJAY ON THE OTHER HAND IS A CONFIRMED STREET KID, HE LIKES THE BUZZ OF THE BULAWAYO CBD BUT HE ALSO HAS A GREAT PASSION FOR CRICKET. HENCE HIS FAVOURITE JOB TOUTING LOCATION USED TO BE OUTSIDE QUEENS CRICKET GROUNDS DURING THOSE HALCYON DAYS WHEN WE WOULD WATCH OUR BOYS IN RED HITTING SIXES AND THE LIKE AROUND THAT MAGNIFICENT VENUE. JAYJAY WOULD DEFTLY PARK HIS CLIENTS IN NICE SHADY LOCATIONS AND THEN HOP INTO THE BACK OF A STRATEGICALLY PARKED TRUCK AND WATCH CRICKET FOR FIVE MAGIC DAYS. JAYJAY IS A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF THE YOUNG STREET KID WE ALL KNEW WAY BACK IN THE SEVENTIES, CALLED SIXPENCE, WHERE SIXPENCE IS NOW I HAVE NO IDEA BUT I FEAR HE FELL INTO A CROWD WITH BAD HABITS AND WENT THE WAY OF MOST TRADITIONAL STREET KIDS. NOT ALL STREET KIDS ARE BAD, NOT ALL OF THEM SNIFF GLUE AND DRINK METHS ACCORDING TO THE MEDIA, SOME OF THEM DESERVE A BREAK IN LIFE, AND THERE ARE ORGANISATIONS WHO ARE ENDEAVOURING THANK GOODNESS TO GIVE THESE LADS A SECOND CHANCE. HOPEFULLY I WON'T HAVE TO SEE SIXPENCES GRANDCHILDREN GUARDING MY CAR SOMETIME IN THE YEARS TO COME AND THAT GOOD FORTUNE WILL FAVOUR THESE YOUNG MEN. +++++ NOTICES The 500Km Blue Cross Challenge is now over and holds many memories of hard uphill, upwind and tough terrains together with some of the most spectacular heart stopping scenery and exhilarating downhills ever to be experienced in this beautiful country of ours, scenery ranging from the hot and dusty, sandy and stony lower reaches of the Save and Runde Rivers of the Zimbabwe Gonarezhou Lowveld area, up to the crispy cool and rain drenched Chimanimani mountains (yes it rained on the third chilly morning of the Blue Cross Challenge), back to the lower altitudes of Hot Springs Birchenough Bridge country, only to climb once again up to the heights of the Mutare Christmas Pass leg breaking haul, onto the high rain grooved red soil base of Mount Nyangani the last muscle testing 126Kms away, with it's thin, chilly air sucking the oxygen out of a hard and fast beating temple lobe and soaring body pulse, straining to climb the rocky and eroded gravel roads pulling further and further away from the lower altitudes left behind days before. Then, on the morning of the sixth day, to climb up that magnificent peak of Mount Nyangani rising up above the haze line of the Eastern Highlands mountain atmosphere where the highest geological beacon in the country marks the end of the grueling five day cycle and ten day walking marathon of the SPCA Blue Cross Challenge. The SPCA staff from the Lowveld were there on hand throughout the long days to supply moral support where needed and to show the flag of their erstwhile organisation just to remind us of the real reason behind the marathon. The local villagers along the way were mostly encouraging, continually asking where we were going to, what were our names and where were we from, most of these rural people not new to the passing parade of cyclists that have graced their lands previously over the past eight years, huffing and puffing and raising clouds of dust along the way. The sweep vehicle of Mike Gill bringing up the rear, having to contend with the possibility of one or two participants unable to meet the harsh demands of the day's challenges or the breakdown of a seconders vehicle, was always a comforting assurance should the eventuality arise. Most welcoming of all was on stage three from Chimanimani to Cashel through the dreaded Tank Nek Pass where the road was so bad that only the 4X4 of Mike Gill's sweep vehicle was able to travel, as the thought of having to carry a broken bike for seventy odd Ks to the next relief would have been daunting, to say the least. Cyclists and walkers from all over Zimbabwe, and some brave souls from our neighbouring countries, took part in the marathon, all personally and selflessly raising a total of over Forty Million Dollars in both cash and goods for that wonderful charity the SPCA of Zimbabwe. At the presentation dinner held on that evening of the final day, recognition was given to the person who accomplished the ride in the fastest time for 2004, Andre Steenkamp of South Africa, who rode brilliantly and courageously for a total of under 19 hours to complete the marathon, and at the other end of the scale the longest period taken to achieve the same distance was just over 31 hours, achieved by a courageous woman and man individual combo from Harare, an amazing feat for every one. One brave woman from Harare had trained for the Challenge in her Gym 'spinning' facilities and had borrowed a mountain bike and a racing bike from friends which she had not sat on prior to the start of the first stage and consequently went through a sharp learning curve in the first few days and managed to complete more than 75 percent of the whole ordeal. The ultimate Tyre Kaya shield for the Spirit of the Blue Cross Award was presented to Bulawayo participant, Neal Leach, closely followed by the other three Blue Jersey recipients of the marathon, Alistair Banks of Harare, Tony Ruben of Cape Town and the speed king from Joburg, Andre Steenkamp, all of whom showed unselfish help and assistance to their fellow riders and newly made friends during the worst and trying times in a very tough and grueling five day challenge. For those of us who were on the brink of taking up the challenge of the Blue Cross Challenge this year but backed down because of lack of fitness and a late start to their training programme, now is the time to start your preparations and getting together your support team, because without good backup and the right support people behind you, the challenge could be much more difficult than can be imagined. Accommodation along the way is both superb and rustic but must be booked well in advance to secure what might still be available next year (one of the lodges in Chimanimani open last year was no longer available this year, but thanks to one of the local community stalwarts, other lodges were opened, renovated and made available to participants and support crew free of all charges). So, in conclusion, if YOU would like to rise to the challenge of the Blue Cross next year, start now by putting the wheels in motion, get those bikes out of the shed, lube the chains and exercise those two pistons that drive that machine down the road, and you will see how easily the name of the game changes from the 'BLUE CROSS' to the 'BLUE CRUISE' and how fantastic it feels to know that you have achieved one of Zimbabwe's greatest physical challenges. ++++++ This is quite amusing: See if you can do this.
