CONGRATULATIONS To The Kids Who Survived the 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !! First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, bread and butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We did not have Play-stations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live in us forever. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them! Cricket matches had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! If you were born in the 30s, the 40s or the 50s, the 60s or 70s You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. +++++ NOTICES Girls’ College presents... SCS has made great advances in the last month in securing more donations both in cash and kind and we would like to take this opportunity to thank those that have so generously supported us. We still need alot more, so please guys any help would be appreciated! We have had contact with various pharmaceutical companies in the country and hopefully we will be receiving donations for bandages, non-prescription drugs, vits, creams, powders, etc. If anyone knows of other Companies or people that may be able to assist in this line please contact either myself or Doreen Tod on Byo 280720. These products go along way in alleviating bedsores, dry skin, regular headaches, everyday aches and pains, etc. Our ambulance service from EMRAS has been used a few times this month to transport our elderly to hospital due to broken femurs and infections of break-ages. This all costs the Trust money so people please help us to help them. SCS is also undertaking a registration of our Senior Citizens so that we will know their requirements when they need assistance. If you know of anyone that might want to register please contact us with the details. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their donations, help and kindness, especially my Hubby Craig who is a great support and Doreen Tod who works quietly behind the scenes as well as Celine Schiejde for her assistance. That was a wake up call for her and she now makes certain her cell phone is out of view of everyone. To secure your windows with film that prevents the window smashing completely and shattering everywhere, please contact Carguard who will fit the film to your car. When you go in, just mention my name and they will help the Trust out in Bulawayo with whatever we may require. - Observed by a schoolgirl sitting in her mother's car. A woman dashed into a shop to buy some cigarettes, leaving her digital camera on the floor of the passenger side in her car. Whilst the woman was in the shop, one guy tampered with her lock, then managed to open the window and stole the camera, whilst his accomplice pushed himself in front of the woman in the shop to do the following: make certain she was still there; to distract her with his brashness of wanting to be served before her; and also to block her view of the car. This is not a new method of robbery, in fact there is usually up to 4 men around that will watch from various positions, all doing something that the victim will not be aware of. Again, keep things out of view, so that they don't smash and grab and be aware of the gangs that roam around in various areas. Again Fife Street is a very hot area from 14th Avenue to Leopold Takawira Ave. - Lay-byes - When travelling from City to City in Zimbabwe, please be very cautious about stopping at Lay byes. One couple, thinking everything was all right when they could see no-one around, stopped for a break, and were attacked by 2 men who came out of the bushes. Luckily some people passing by, stopped and helped them. Not an experience anyone should go through on the roads. - Unattended vehicles in National Parks - Please do not leave vehicles unattended especially at White Rhino caves if you happen to go there during the week. There is no guard on duty, and one lady with children and her friend came back to find their car had been broken into with various items stolen. She not only has the hassle of replacing the window, but to pay for a new tyre, as they had slashed it a number of times. TEENAGERS Parents and Teenagers must revert back to the old days of talking and informing each other where they are going etc,. This is being proven throughout the world that we have all got too lax in enquiring and giving "space", but this is becoming detrimental in the end and we need to reinforce it back into our lives - take an interest in your children and adults behave responsibly by also informing them where you are going for the evening. Herewith are a few tips to let each other know: 1. Where you're going. 2. Whom you expect to meet. 3. What time you're supposed to meet. 4. Any secondary destination - having met someone, you might go on to another place, for instance. 5. How and along what route you intend to travel. 6. When you expect to return. 7. What to do if you don't return when you're expected to. (tips taken from Reader's Digest SAFE, SECURE and STREETWISE p163) SPONSORED GOLF TOURNAMENT Tentative plans are being made for a Sponsored Golf Tournament to help raise funds for the Bulawayo Trust. We are so grateful to the wonderful people who have supported us as we have tried to turn Old Umtali into a place that you will want to keep coming back to. We apologise to those we have had to turn away, but the good news is that we now have an additional suite ready for you! This room, off the courtyard, is larger with enough space to accommodate a family. And it has a fully equipped kitchenette for those who prefer to self-cater. The other exciting news is that we have had ADSL installed in all our rooms. Our guests are now able to connect to the Internet 24 hours a day, at no extra cost. Plug in and check your mail, catch up on the news or tune in to Radio Siberia, all for free! And prompted by the heat of summer, we have put fridges into our guest rooms. So the next time you are in our area, please do remember Old Umtali Guest House. ( www.oldumtali.co.za ) With our very best wishes, Terry and Gloria. Every now and again, if we have something interesting to report, we send an email to the people in our address book. If you would rather not receive the email, please just let me know.
