Anyone under the age of thirty will probably not even know what an old fashioned typewriter looks like unless they see one in a book or a museum, but we Baby-boomers from the Dark Ages sure know and remember those old monsters with shuddering horror !! Cast your mind back to those rigid little keys that you had to hit with force of a sledgehammer compared to the caressing feel of a modern computer keyboard !! The earliest typewriters used keyboard layouts that had letters arranged alphabetically. These layouts enabled the typist to locate keys easily. However, a problem often occurred. When the typist struck in rapid succession two or more keys whose type bars were next to one another, the bars frequently jammed. To remedy this problem, a helpful fellow called Sholes helped develop another layout in the 1870's. This layout, known as QWERTY, is still the standard for keyboards in most English-speaking countries. It is called QWERTY because the letters Q, W, E, R, T, and Y appear in succession near the upper left-hand corner of the keyboard. In the QWERTY layout, the bars for the letters that most often appear in combination in the English language are far apart. It always amazed me how beautifully manicured some secretaries could keep their nails when mine were ragged and split and scuffed from tackling those objectionable old Remingtons. I must now let our younger readers know that these typewriters were not powered by anything other than ones own manual forcible hand power !! Oh yes indeed, the pounding of one of the letters by one's fingers, moved the little key along until you reached the edge of the piece of paper and then with the help of a little lever you would with some considerable force, manually push the carriage across from the right hand side of the paper back to the left hand side. And this had to happen at the end of each and every single line, and they dare complain about RSI (repetitive strain injury !!) This was jolly well hard labour you mark my words. Things improved a tad when the electric typewriter was invented but for some reason the manual typewriters were kept in the schools and offices in Zimbabwe for many years probably as a form of corporal punishment. Typing more than one copy of anything was a nightmare. Several copies of a document were often demanded by unthinking bosses who had never laid a finger on a type writer in their pampered lives !! There was the all important top copy of nicest bond paper, followed by the flimsy pink sheet of paper which probably went to the accounts department, followed by the pale blue copy which went to the sales department, then the buttercup yellow sheet which went to the filing department and last but not least the white sheet which probably ended up in the bin but was compulsory just to test your mettle as a typist AND each sheet interspersed with a sheet of carbon paper. Even getting these six sheets of paper to line up evenly with the six sheets of carbon paper tucked in between, was a work of art trust me !! Now I had to actually explain what a sheet of carbon paper was to my daughter !! Woe betide you if you made a typing error and pressed the wrong key by mistake !! Out came that horrid blue pencil typewriter eraser, it had a white piece of rubber on one end and a itsy bitsy brush on the other. Each copy of that darned manuscript had to be altered in minute ghastly detail. Little pieces of paper carefully and painstakingly placed in between every single sheets of paper to stop the carbon marking the paper below as you rubbed ever so delicately as not to tear that awful flimsy paper. It was a total nightmare. The introduction of tippex made things a teensy weensy bit easier but not a great deal, white blobs and splodges were a dead give away to the boss, and most secretaries gave a sigh of relief when those little continuous tippex strips were invented as if you were careful enough you could get away with a whole lot more in the mysterious realms of typing trials and tribulations. I never had a typing lesson and was self taught which was probably why I never stayed, thank heavens, in any typing pool for too long, but radio and TV scripts also had to have several copies, one for the audio, one for the operator and one for the video operator. None of this cutting and pasting that we know of today, if you needed to put in some extra words, too bad, out came that piece of paper and you started all over again from the top !! Imagine the poor fellow who had to type out War and Peace for Mr Tolstoy !! Now I know we have probably forgotten the horrors of the old typewriter already, but do you remember changing the ribbon ? Oh yes, it had a little spool with an actual sixty inch ribbon that jumped along winding merrily from spool to spool from side to side, black on the bottom half and red on the top half of the more modern machines and these little darlings had to be changed periodically at much cost to life and limb. There would be ink everywhere, on the desk, on the clothes, on the fingers, on the nose, I could cry when I remember those awful awful cruel days of typing yore !! And so when the blessed computer was introduced into our lives, life became a whole lot easier. Our children will never ever know just what horrors we had to go through will they.? ++++++++ NOTICES Performing Arts is delighted to be able to promote a concert by the Mexican mezzo-soprano ENCARNACIAN VAZQUEZ. You should also have received information as to what to do with carcases found in the field, but the specifics related to Harare and environs. Hopefully the following will be helpful to Matabeleland members and residents. At a meeting on 10 November with Dr P. Moyo, the Provincial Veterinary Officer for Matabeleland North, the following procedure has been agreed. 1. If you find a fresh dead bird, put on a pair of rubber gloves and put it into plastic bags and seal as tightly as possible. 2. Then as quickly as possible deliver it to your nearest Veterinary Department. The Department will then arrange for the sample to be tested locally or sent on to Harare or both. 3. Do not refrigerate or freeze the carcass. 4. If you find an unfresh dead bird, put on your rubber gloves, dig a nice deep hole and bury it. 5. If you find a sick bird, again put on your gloves and take it to the nearest Veterinary Department who will take blood samples. Its possible they will also retain the bird, but Im not sure about this. Testing is done in two ways, under ideal circumstances: either by blood sampling, or by tissue culture, or both. The former produces quick results, the latter takes a couple of weeks. For Bulawayo, birds should be taken to the Veterinary Officer in charge of the laboratory, situated within the offices on Antony Taylor Avenue, Raylton (past the Railway Station, over the railway crossing and on your right before the road bends left). The Receptionist will guide you to the right office. For other areas, please take the specimens to your local provincial veterinary offices. They should have been briefed. I hope you will find this helpful. If you have any problems, please ring me on 246269 I may or may not be able to help! Prices soaring, fuel still an even rarer luxury, add to this the alarming rate at which our hard-earned cash seems to vanish on a pitiful bag or two of basic groceries.... it's a battle both out there as well as here in our heads, to desperately try to keep calm!! We all do what needs to be done to feed, clothe and school the children, work harder to attempt to keep up with the weekly inflation of bills, but catching ourselves at odd moments in the day wondering where it will all end and what the future holds? This is "survival mode". This is where we get to stare at our own fear in the face and tread where we've never been before. We make a plan for fuel, another to buy rare luxuries such as sugar or cooking oil and yet another to stretch the dollars until the end of the month. We have learned to say "no" to many things which we want to ensure that we can say "yes" to the things that we or our family need. Normal everyday "basic" commodities and actions in another place and time have become a treat for us, something to fully appreciate, to savour and to draw out the pleasure with which it comes! This can be a glass of imported wine, a take-away pizza for the kids, an imported deodorant, or even a bottle of hair conditioner!!??#*! Many, many ex zimbos and people living outside, simply cannot understand why we're still here!!! Incredulous stares when one describes the plan of action for water shortages, fuel saving and sourcing, and daily adjustments on every level to rising costs and inefficiencies in just about every sector of business, municipality or service industries! Empathy runs high amongst those on the outside who understand why we are still here. So many have openly encouraged us to stand our ground, to hang in and to throw ourselves at making it "work out", to do whatever it takes to build upon the foundation of who and what we are. These very same people are the ones who tell us about the despair, the longing, the loneliness and the yearning for parts of our beloved land. The wide open spaces, the people and friendships, the Kariba sunsets, the laughter around a braai, the community in "making a plan". The "drop in for tea" attitude so prevelant amongst all zimbabweans regardless of race, colour, tribe or background. The "we're all in it" under-current that brings us together in fuel queues, financial disasters, daily challenges. Our mountains are huge, yet sitting in that auditorium listening to the shift in some of the best researchers and practitioners from sports medicine and the field of excellence in both physical and mental endeavour towards prevention and treatment of "chronic diseases", I found myself counting blessing after blessing for living in Zim!!!! Here are just a few of the "highlights" ... * 60% of men and 50% of women are overweight in Oz. Could say the same for UK and USA . South Africa not far behind. * Inactivity has become a number one killer risk factor for heart disease ... on a par with smoking. In fact, being inactive is the same as smoking 20 a day!!!!!! * Countries all over the world are engaging in huge, multi billion dollar health warnings and promotions. Get moving, eat less junk, get away from the T.V., eat less junk, get off the couch and turn off the tv ... don't use the remote, eat less junk, get moving!!!!!! * Clogged and diseased heart arteries has just become the biggest killer in the world!!!! * It has become a crisis of such huge proportions to just get people to do enough movement to shunt blood through their blood vessels to literally slow down the rate at which bodies are rotting from disuse, from stress and from almost 100% diseases caused by LIFESTYLE!!!!!!!! So, my dear friends and countrymen, compare that to our verrrry junk food depleted daily diet (due to being too expensive or not available), our lack of super-duper-high-speed-high-perfrmance technology which means that we have to actually get off our butts and DO something with muscles somewhat larger than those in our index fingers, our problem of kids having half of most days doing school sports, our awful transport system so we walk, cycle or run from A to B. We don't run the risk of our kids hanging out at malls at every free moment .... there aren't any at which to hang out!! Most of our kids don't get access to T.V. games, to the latest cell phones and ipods .... because we simply can't afford them. Even DSTV is a treat in increasingly more households .... so what's a poor, deprived Zim kid to do???? Well, they swim, run, cycle, play all manner of school and social activities. Triathlon, swimming, cycling, dancing (all kinds!), run around playing in the garden and occasionally they have a small relative break in their weekly activity mileage to watch a movie, listen to some music or chill at home or a mate's house for a few hours. Our challenge is not to stop them eating, but to ensure that they eat enough for their needs!!! Ok, ok. Yes, I am biased. But do me a favour and compare the average one-way hour commute in Jo'burg / Cape Town / Durbs traffic with the 6 minute trip we have to make all the way from my front door to work / school. Cycling in Durbs or Joezies is like having your dearest death wish come true. Doing what you love, whilst playing with the grim reaper every time a vehicle passes .. which is around 5 million a minute. In Zim, the driving's not too great but hey, not too much of a hassel considering that 20 minutes on a bike in any direction out of town gets you into some exquisite countryside and all the wide open space in the world and a fraction of the traffic with which to contend! No trip to Joezies is complete without a trip to Pick n' Pay supermarket - which was heaven as always; I tried not to let the morbid, stressed, depressed local shoppers get me down as they went about their daily / weekly million-choice-product shopping burdensome routine. I skipped out of there with my bag of treasures (sunlight soap, Charlie Gold deo, meusli, oats and a whole bottle of chocolate sauce for kids' twice a week ice-cream treat) and went back to the lectures on averting the biggest ever, world lifestyle disease disaster . smiling secretly to myself as more and more "evidence" was given by some of the best experts in the world as to why we are still here!!! In conclusion, I don't dispute the fact that we are being faced with a mountain of struggles, but from the bottom of my heart I want you to consider the daily effect on our own health, sense of community spirit, and most importantly, the impact on that of our children!!! Every day that we are here, someone out there is being admitted to coronary care, another child is diagnosed with type II diabetes, billions is being spent on drugs to treat obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression. Whilst the angels in our midst are desperately fighting to treat, uplift and feed the starving and fatally ill, in the first world there are incomprehensible measures and expenses taken to prevent the over-fed from self destruction!!?! We get to spend daylight hours with those we love in many an impromptu gathering - each one an opportunity to laugh, really laugh. To cry, really cry. And to know the caring and genuine bonds that nourish our souls, feed our resolve to lift our chin and square our shoulders. These are the things worth struggling for, this is why we're still here. Let us look to our challenges always with the knowledge that the flip side of that hardship coin holds many, many personal and nation-building attributes!! By the grace of God we will look back on this time and feel the warmth of all those in our lives who held our hand and walked with us physically, mentally and spiritually. Every day that we are here is a blessing not a curse, and don't ever think that it's a breeze outside of these borders. Enough said, I just wanted to share these thoughts with you and to tell you that we are in this together and we will make it together . our attitude and direction is the same ... "Our Zimbabwe". Let's do it . together. Always, and always, Debi-great-to-be-back-home Jeans xxxx +++++++ The Roasted Berry Coffee House is now open from 8.00 am for breakfast, coffee, tea and cake, and an assortment of healthy light lunches.
