You failed your driver's license first time. You saw "Grease" more than three times. You still wear vellies without socks. You miss the smell of rain on a hot, tar road. You miss Christmas by the pool... You horrify people by eating raw, dried meat. You horrify other Zimbos by cooking boerewors "to death". You took driving lessons in an Anne Hunter Anglia in Bulawayo. You still own some Springbok Hits LP's. You still pee on the lawn at night. You carved your name on a famous landmark in Zim. You chatted up a farmer's daughter at a Country Club get-together -- with one eye on her Dad. You did wheelies on the Enterprise Road outside Gremlin's or on Selborne Avenue in Bulawayo. You almost lost the family jewels on the rock slide at Mermaid's Pool You can still sing "Ach pleeez Daddy". You whinged to the waiter at Caribbea Bay at the outrageous price of their beers during the Tiger fishing Competition. You injected Cane spirit into a pocket of oranges to beat the booze ban at the Rugby at the Police grounds. You still refer to toilet paper as 'bog roll', and the toilet as a 'PK'. You got a speeding ticket trying to make the border by 6 PM. You sang rude or witty words instead of the originals to hymns in school assembly. Your forearms and the areas between you lower thighs and mid calf are irredeemably burned brown by the sun. You once owned an 8 track car tape player!!! You have given up looking for a good meat pie. You miss the smell of red stoep polish. You bore or frighten your children with harrowing tales of your deprived upbringing in the days when TV started at 17H00 and kids were expected to ride push bikes to school... You still butter bread by holding the slice in your hand... You wish you'd had the presence of mind to keep mum's Morris minor You ate supper in Vila de Manhica, the Vila Perry, Maxies or Guido's on occasions. You can remember the beer adverts on the tin trays the hotel waiters used... You can remember thinking that Bengal Juice was OK. You still believe it's wrong to use bad language in mixed company You still think of traffic lights as robots You know the words to more than two ABBA songs You used to call your parents' friends "Uncle" and "Aunty" You have driven on a strip road You long for that soft morning glow that brightens the Zimbabwe sky between 6am and 8am. Really miss a great, fantastic, bed rattling, window shaking, earth tremoring, all-kids-and-animals-in-the-parents'-bed tropical storm. You parked your car in a car park and couldn't find it again, because it was a blue Renault 4. You remember watching the brown grass turn green after a day's rain. Arguing that Castle was for men Lion was for kids, and pommies. You still wonder what this thing polystyrene is, ... you know it as kaylite. You still refer to Koki pens as Neo's. Muuush is still common in your vocabulary, as is 'lekker'. You still have Wrex Tarr's "Chilapalapa" LP's and know the words to "Cockie Lobbin". You hear crickets in July and remember the December Christmas beetles. You know or still write to someone from PE, Saints, Churchill, Ellis Robins, Falcon College, Eveline High, Townsend School, Chaplin, Plummers, Guinea Fowl or Gwebi Agricultural College. You drank Tanganda tea or Preema Coffee (or Day Break). You shopped at Truworths, Edgar's, Meikles or Kingston's. You had an avocado, mango, guava and pawpaw tree in your garden. You played in a sand pit and on a jungle gym. You thought bilharzia was an incurable disease but still swam in the rivers, dams anyway. You remember jacaranda trees in full bloom. You remember when a Coke or ice-lolly cost a tickie. You miss the taste of bream fried on the side of the dam five minutes after you caught it. You have at least one ivory, soapstone or wooden carving. You still remember the taste of gemsquash and melted butter, mealies, Mazoe Orange Juice, mealie meal, Creamy Meal and Maltabella porridge. You think there is no green surpassing that of the Sandawana emeralds. You still expect to see a chongololo after an afternoon rain and a few flying ants. The following names mean something to you: "Sandro's", "Arkies", "Club Tomorrow", The Carlton Club and The Stork Club. You collected coke cans on your trips to South Africa 'cos they were so cool. You still can't get your head around the idea of throwing away a glass bottle, instead of taking it back for the deposit. You've ever sat at Castle Corner in the cricket grounds - and can't remember who won the cricket match. You were there when the 'chicken farmer' beat England. You think the "all Blacks" are the Zimbabwe Tennis Team. You were a member of Hellenics / Callies / Raylton / Alex / Old Boys/ Postals / Old Miltonians / Mac Club/ B.A.C. / Queens / or Raylton. You've ever been boating on Lake Mac - before the hyacinth. You've ever driven up to Montclair for an evening's gambling and been back at work the next day. You still think the most haunting sound in the world is the cry of the fish eagle. You know at least one person who has 'streaked' at the Harare Cricket Grounds. You remember sitting for hours in petrol queues - and not getting any. You ever got fifteen people into a VW Kombi - long enough to get past the gates at the 'drive-in'. You made out in the back of a car at the 'Nitestar' , the Sky View or the Mabelreign Drive-in. You think of the four major food groups as beef, chicken, sadza and tea. You carry jumper cables in your car. You only own 3 spices: salt, pepper and Tomango. You know all 4 seasons: Almost summer; Summer; Still summer and Christmas. +++++++++++ NOTICES THIS IS ANOTHER APPEAL!!! (Private Voluntary Organisation number PV0204/68) (Formerly WILDLIFE SOCIETY OF ZIMBABWE) Due to the critical situation that developed in Hwange National Park towards the end of 2005 and before the onset of the rains, there was much public concern regarding the state of the park and its water supplies. In order to try and rectify any further crises, a joint venture has been set up with the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, Friends of Hwange Trust and WEZ. Our first project with the co-operation of Hwange Park staff will be to completely revamp ten selected pans and their water source. Friends of Hwange Trust, in conjunction with Parks and Wildlife Management, have employed Mario Gomes to supervise the first stages of this project. The venture will be operating out of The Hide and we very much appreciate the active part they will be playing in initiating our plans. A suitable vehicle is on loan to this joint venture, generously sponsored by Mitsubishi Fuso and fitted with a winch and bull bars by Naledi Motors, both of Gaberone, Botswana. Safari Centre, Cape Town, has provided a second winch and Caltex, South Africa, has promised sponsorship of some fuel. Getaway Magazine and Flame Lily Holidays are some of the prime movers in Friends of Hwange and have done much to solicit support in South Africa. Many people, societies and companies have expressed concern and offered assistance, for which we are most grateful - and so are the animals! Hwange Conservation Society UK, SAVE Foundation Australia, Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, Wilderness Safaris, Matupula Safaris, The Hide Safari Camp and several others have already played a significant role in Hwange National Park. While we wish to express grateful thanks to all concerned, as with so many societies in Zimbabwe and with our prevailing economic climate, WEZ is appealing to anyone who can, in any way, assist with this ongoing exercise. We should like to appeal to all WEZ members to ensure that their membership subscriptions are paid up to date and would obviously welcome any new members to the society. (Any Matabeleland subscriptions should be paid at the WEZ shop in the TV Sales and Hire premises, Fife Street.) We also run an occupational therapy group within which the women who are our clients, knit and sew using wool and material that has been donated. Many of these women are grannies with extra dependants and no breadwinner. They try to earn some money by selling what they have made. The third aspect of SGOFOTI focuses on the orphans who are among the most affected by this terrible scourge. Spring's tender shoots, did wilt in the sun. No tuber, nor mushroom, to delight our tongue. The seeds of tomorrow were seared by the heat. The muddied pools, became dust to our feet. The land, gasped and....in agony writhed. The fruits of summer...withered and died. My brothers, scavenged for morsels to eat. My babes, their bones the sun doth bleach. Ravaged by hunger, skeletal they grew, until painfully, their last breath they drew. I silently peered from the shade so sparse, hidden by boulders and remnants of grass. Humans ran...and shouted, with glee... "Maize for Africa!" - but none for me. My flesh, they hunt with spear and knife, Through the bush, I run for my life! My legs, are weak, and my body, grows thin, I know I must die! - like the rest of my kin. Now I lay my weary bones to rest - Unable to withstand, this final test. In the crimson sunset, of fear and sorrow, I know there shall be no tomorrow. +++++ HUMANS A wretched babe, in misery is born. In squalor, filth, alas, forlorn. The mother, warm in her maternal bed, Caresses the bundle and with fervour says: "We are humans - we must survive!" - No matter if the world should die! "Food and shelter!" the damned do wail. Another tree? - no death, to another vale. Orange embers glow in melancholy sleep, Denuded and empty, the land doth weep. "We are humans - we must survive!" - No matter if the world should die! Rivers choked with silt and sorrow, Cities grow - cold and hollow. Pollution and poison on the earth is spilled, Skies, with acid rains are filled. "We are humans - we must survive!" - No matter if the world should die! Crops, a million mouths to feed. Men of power, ambition and greed. Animals, tormented and cornered, they die. People just look - only few of them sigh. "We are humans - we must survive!" - No matter if the world should die! ++++++++ SEEKING ADAM RENDER'S hunter, born Germany 1822, discoverer of Gt Zimbabwe in 1867. Many Thanks Steve rom: steven.mccormick@leeds.gov.uk +++++++ I left Bulawayo with my family in the 70's. Remember with such happiness our big garden, kopje's (my children have never seen a proper kopje), running free in Beacon Hill, Hillside, Montrose ... kids cant run free in most places anywhere in the world any more, but we are lucky to live in a rural town, but my children can never experience the freedom I had as a child in Zim. Most of all I remember and often wonder what happened to our super gardener (Rubin) and our Nanny (Anna), their lives must have changed so much. We get so little news in UK re the situation there, but with so many of us all around the world and the internet, Skype phoning etc, we do get the occasional news firsthand. All of you are in our prayers, that this wonderful country that has been so destroyed is once again rebuilt and that God's love will overcome this disaster that has been created by one person. Well done and thank you for running SOAP, I am meeting up with some ex-Bulawayo folk next week-end and am going to see if they are interested in doing something from UK to help, if we could get enough folk over here to assist, however small, it could mean the difference of a nice jar of coffee in the hampers too! My father Roger has in the past regularly done work there for the City Council and in fact successfully tendered for the refractory brickwork on a second cremator over ten years ago. Now, you can speak to any businessman in town that my Dad has done work for and they will all tell you that his work is of the highest quality standard. Not only in Bulawayo, as he has travelled all over the country to meet the demand for his work, whether bakers' ovens, kilns, boilers, furnaces or even pizza ovens! The City Council has in the past few years been using less qualified people to service the cremators, and of course now they find themselves in the position they're in today. The City Fathers have contacted my Dad with a view to getting him to submit a tender for the refurbishment of the cremator so hopefully the situation will be regularised before very long. Regards Darrell Insley +++++ Please can I register to help get the Crematorium up and running again. Two years ago I lost my eldest son in Mutare and we had to find enough firewood, to deliver to the Crematorium, to enable them to carry out the Cremation. Never mind the trauma of loosing a loved one, but to then have to source firewood in order for authorities to conduct a cremation ceremony is bizarre to say the least! Bioengineers at the University of Calgary have successfully grown insulin producing cells in a lab, marking a major breakthrough in diabetes research. There are still many steps to be taken, but they eventually hope to transplant lab grown, insulin producing cells directly into the bodies of patients with Type 1 diabetes. In theory, the transplant would eliminate the need for daily insulin injections by patients who suffer from the disease. Dr. Leo Behie, the professor in charge of the project, said, "The people who receive the transplants, they have no doubt about it, that they would call this a cure, but I think in this consideration we have to be careful of the word cure. This is more of a treatment that increases hugely your quality of life. http://charityfocus.org/php-bin/qad.php?n=2342 +++++ Be The Change: Practice the highest of arts today: take one minute right now to consider how you can affect the quality of the day.
