Our city of Bulawayo is much the poorer without the strength of this Great Man. He touched all of our lives with no thought of race, colour or creed. He remembered everyone, he remembered our names, our family members, our hobbies and our friends. He sought only to spread his love and the love of the Lord to each and every person in the Matabeleland community. His life spanned many decades, his strength, his devotion to Christ, his devotion to this City and this province, will be remembered by everyone who came in contact with this remarkable man. Catholics, Anglicans, Protestants, Baptists, the Jewish Community, every single person of every single religion, was encompassed by his extraordinary aura of love for his fellow man. We will miss you father Odilo, our hearts and minds are heavy at your passing, but will always be filled with your light and your love. "Together, we see new leaves glowing against the sun, green hillsides shimmering with the breeze, the bright purple bursts of lupine. And it's okay if there is nothing beyond this, because there is this: life, everlasting, in the bloom of every flower." --Jamaica Ritcher M.K. ++++++ AN EXTRAORDINARY MAN - FATHER ODILO Father Odilo was born in the historic farming village of Arberg, in Franken, Germany on 14th October 1912. He died on Thursday 8th June 2006, in Mater Dei Hospital, with his nephew Max Weeger there from Germany and the comfort of the last sacraments and prayers going up from there and all over the world. He learned the dignity and values of honest hard work and the finest of moral and religious traditions from his modest but very good family. He was in the last group of missionaries that was allowed to leave Germany in 1938 and he gave his whole life to mission work in Matabeleland. He was a wonderful man who committed his life fully to God, and to serving the many peoples of Zimbabwe. One of his sermons, especially at baptisms, was about living our lives like candles. He certainly did exactly that – giving light and warmth and consuming himself in the process. He had a genuine love for and interest in people, across a most surprising and wide range. He maintained contact personally with so many people whom he considered his personal friends and those of us fortunate to be included knew his concern and felt his prayers. He had a deep reservoir of natural and acquired wisdom and human understanding and he appreciated God's loving provision for us all in the beauty and complexity of creation, the earth and all life on it and the stars and all of the ever-more revealed universe. He appreciated the finer things in life, like art, music and etiquette and supported many community presentations and efforts with his presence. His strong sense of justice suffered greatly from the absurd removal of his own rights as a Zimbabwean resident for over 65 years, as well as the growing culture of impunity and disregard for basic rights that has done so much in our country. He made friends from all races religions and was especially committed to reaching out to non-Catholic Christians and many Jewish friends and his memory for names and details was extraordinary. He was a self- disciplined and totally dedicated Catholic priest, but he found an amazing amount of time to attend to sick visits and the pastoral needs of innumerable people, irrespective of race or creed. Although we all feel his loss personally and keenly, we can be confident that he himself will be granted his heavenly reward and that we have an unique ally who will intercede for our many needs. May his dear soul rest in peace. John L. Sullivan +++++ NOTICES GIRLS' COLLEGE – WINTER FAYRE – SATURDAY 22 JULY 2006 9.00AM – 4.00PM. There is no advance booking for the Cathedral Concert on Saturday morning where seating is unreserved (season ticket holders please note) and a limited number of seats will be available at the door. Season tickets are still available at the Academy and the price remains $4 000 000 until the end of the month since the exchange rate hasn't moved much even if local prices have !! May we also take the opportunity to confirm that both the Eskimo Hut and Trade Fair Car Park 3 will be available for parking throughout the festival. The entrance to Car Park 3 is next to the Academy gate - just before it if you're approaching from Parirenyatwa Street, just after it if you're coming from the Hillside Road. There will be security guards in both that car park and at Eskimo Hut as well as on the Academy gates. And you might like to know that emergency lighting has already been installed in the Sibson Hall and a generator will be on hand so, even if there are power cuts, no concert will have to be postponed. Indeed, with the emergency lighting we hope that there will not even be an interruption should there be a cut mid-performance. DRESS WARM, CASH BAR SECURE PARKING ++++++++ WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENT ZIMBABWE Together with Friends of Hwange Trust and Parks and Wildlife Management Authority Further to our first communication, we should like to give a brief update on the work being undertaken at various pans in Hwange National Park. In consultation with various stake holders, it was decided that the pans which would have priority to begin with would be Tshebe Tshebe, Sinanga, Shumba, Kennedy One and Two, Jambili, Inyantue, Mabuya Mabena, Tshompani, and Makwa. Mario Gomes and his team have been working steadily away and on a recent trip to Hwange, it was heartening to see some of the engines already up and running. At least one of these pans had not been pumped for a couple of years so it was particularly gratifying to see water, once again, flowing into the pan. Some of the pump attendants are also doing good work, tidying up their pump stations and taking some pride in the surrounds. So far, Tshebe Tshebe, Kennedy One and Two, Sinanga, Makwa and Jambili are up and running. The team has also got the old windmill at Kennedy One linked up and working which was another of the projects we were hoping would be done. Shumba and Tshompani will not be pumped until the end of the month as there is plenty of surface water still available in the area, but pumping will soon begin at Inyantue and Mabuya Mabena. Permission is being sought to do some work on the various picnic sites, repairing thatch destroyed by baboons, rigging up better fencing and gates, etc., and we await this permission from Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. Precious husband of Shirley, beloved father of Shane, Debbie & Adam, Grandfather of Matthew, Brad, David & Ashley. The light has gone out of our world. ++++++ It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of Fr Odilo from Garry and Nicky this morning. I have memories of Fr Odilo from Kumalo School forty years ago right up to the time when he helped me deal with the issue of death at the time of my mother's passing two years ago sharing his last Liebschenkoeken with me in his normal unselfish way. Mum and Fr Odilo were friends for almost sixty years. His message was that death is something beautiful, not to be feared and, despite the fact I am quite certain that the gates of heaven have been flung wide open for him and that he is entirely happy, can't help feeling very sad that his inimitable spirit, love and innate goodness will not be mine to share until we too meet again. He will be enormously missed by all. It is not possible for me to pay my respects at his service this coming week and so I would be terribly grateful if you would record my love and respect for this special, special man as a rather inadequate gesture to all the love he showed me and so many others who cannot be in Bulawayo at this time. PLEASE KEEP THEM IN YOUR PRAYERS ++++ BEITBRIDGE BORDER POST Bogus customs and clearing agents and their touts have been arrested 'by the score" in a police swoop at the Beitbridge border post, according to locally based police chief Andrew Dzaramba. "We are clearing up the situation at the border and will continue to weed out these criminal elements" he says. the clamp down was launched after numerous complaints had been received from truck drivers and owners. Touts initially approached drivers held up in lengthy queues and offered to get a customs officer to come to them on payment of a fee, to help them jump the queue. In this manner, drivers were told, they would get border clearance much faster. but after paying up and having their cargo "inspected" drivers found the clearance papers given to them to be false when attempting to pass through official posts. No trace of the offenders could then be found. Now, says Supt Dzaramba, almost all employees working at the border wear uniforms to distinguish them from any loiterers. This has resulted in less congestion which had become common place with trucks and private travellers able to pass through much faster. ++++++ CRICKET NEWS wonder how many folk in Zimbabwe, ever wonder what has happened to the handful of ex Zimbabwean cricketers now playing in England.? I am the " Visitors " dressing room attendant at Surrey County Cricket Club, I used to run the Zimbabwe National Teams dressing room for 6 years.. Over the last 3 weeks, i have seen Ray Price, Andy Flower, and Sean Ervine, and have got up dates on the players who i have not seen yet. Ray is playing for Worcestershire County Cricket Club, and is having a good season, he and his wife have recently had a daughter. Andy Flower is still playing for Essex, and doing very well with the bat, he scored a ton (100) in Essex's second innings against Surrey over the week end, at Witgift School in Croyden South. Grant Flower, (Gobz), plays most of his games for the Essex One Day squad, and plays the four day game for Essex seconds.., like Andy, he also scored a ton over the week end, I have an idea, they were playing Middlesex. Heath Streak is playing for Warwickshire, he was appointed as captain this season, and is doing exceptionally well, he is unfortunately injured so i believe.? Sean Ervine plays for Hampshire, he batted well against Surrey in a One Day on Sunday, the Surrey bowlers chased leather as he smashed them around the wicket to get into his 40's. Travis Friend was playing for Derbyshire earlier in the season, he is struggling with his form at the moment, and is playing club cricket.., he is a good seam bowler, and i am sure it will not be too long before Travis is back in the Derbyshire side. I will up date you in a few weeks time as to each player again, Darryl Leith ++++++ Hick reaches rare milestone Graeme Hick has joined Sir Jack Hobbs and Graham Gooch in becoming only the third player in history to score 60,000 runs in all forms of cricket. The Worcestershire and former England batsman reached that milestone during the Liverpool Victoria County Championship game with Gloucestershire at Bristol. Hick, who celebrated his 40th birthday last month, amassed 38,591 first-class, 20,972 one-day and 437 Twenty20 Cup runs to achieve the landmark. Zimbabwe-born Hick needs two more centuries to become only the eighth player to score 100 first-class tons for one county. The most recent player to achieve that was Geoff Boycott, who hit 103 centuries for Yorkshire. +++++++ SMALLS VACANCY Looking for a suitable candidate to work within mining operations in Botswana. A Year Less Ordinary In the company of Zimbabwe's Grey Giants by Sharon Pincott By early 2006 Sharon Pincott had spent five years living in the Zimbabwean bush amongst elephants. In this, her second book, Sharon shares her heart-rending story of the year 2005 - including the battle for her elephant friends. It is a one-year (250-page) journey, hand in hand with her animal friends, through the changing seasons. Readers will experience the dramatic changes which each month brings to the Hwange veld - the animals, the birds, the trees and the wildflowers. In addition, it is a story of self- discovery and reflection, full of happy, sad and trying times; of joy, despair - and of hope. It is a journey with elephants; a haunting journey of endurance. Complete with 40 pages of photographs (133 superb images, including 77 of them in colour), this book is a must for wildlife and bush lovers alike. (Only 400 copies will be available for sale within Zimbabwe, from early July. In an attempt to keep the book more affordable, as many copies as possible will be sold direct, avoiding reseller mark-ups (and ensuring maximum $s go towards assisting ongoing wildlife conservation efforts). Release price will be approximately the parallel equivalent of US$13.00. To place orders, Sharon can be contacted on spincott@mweb.co.zw. Enquiries/orders can also be placed via Carmen Deysel at the Camera Centre outlet (Jason Moyo Ave; phone: 61731), and via WEZ committee member Colin Gillies (phone Lithocraft secretary Precious on 61133) - with payment taken on delivery. +++++++++++++ Piano in excellent condition (Heinz) Z$70 million onco. A woman brought a very limp duck into a vet. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the Bird's' chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head sadly and said, "I'm so Sorry, your duck has passed away." The distressed owner wailed, "Are you sure?" "Yes, I'm quite sure. The duck is dead," he replied. "How can you be so sure," she protested. "I mean, you haven't done any Testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something." The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room and returned A few moments later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind Legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck From top to bottom. He then looked at the vet with sad eyes and shook His head. The vet patted the dog and took it out, and returned a few moments later with a cat. The cat jumped up on the table and also sniffed delicately at the bird. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly And strolled out of the room. The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this Is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck." Then the vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill which he handed to the woman. The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "£150!", she cried - "£150 just to tell me my duck is dead?" The vet shrugged. "I'm sorry." "If you'd taken my word for it, the bill would have been £20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now £150." ++++++ People seldom notice old clothes if you wear a big smile. --Lee Mildon Fact of the Day: We study twins, chimps and lottery winners, but still don't understand happiness. In his new book, 'Happiness: The Science Behind Your Smile', Dr. Daniel Nettle suggests that although people believe they will be happier in the future, they in fact seldom are; that societies don't get happier as they get richer; and that people are consistently wrong about the impact of future life-events on their happiness. "People may like to take a walk in the park, or play with their kids and so on, but what they want might be to get a promotion, earn more and buy a bigger house," Nettle says. To be happy, one must learn to be satisfied. [ more ] +++++ You may have tangible wealth untold; Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
