Something happens to him when the days are crisp and cool and the nights are icy. Some deep primeval force starts to move within the savage beast when the leaves start to fall off the jacaranda trees and the town starts to look dry and dusty. A certain edginess ? Is it something in the air perhaps ? He scans Getaway magazine and the travel programmes on telly. He searches avidly for Richard Attenborough and starts to watch Animal Planet. A smattering of khaki starts to creep into his usual elegant blue and white shirt choices. He absent mindedly wears his vellies to work instead of his severe polished black lace up shoes. And then suddenly, as if a butterfly emerges from his chrysalis, he packs his binos, starts to search for cameras, gathers up his bird books and unceremoniously bundles me into the car heading north. The HeeHoo migration pattern has begun again. Two hundred and thirty odd kilometres later, we pull into a bush camp at Hwange and it is only after three four hour game drives in the National Park, and several hours spent at pans and waterholes, that he appears nearly normal again. His needs are simple as are the needs of most Zimbabweans at this time of the year, he needs his annual Winter Hwange Top Up ! Binoculars remain glued to the eyes for hours on end, favourite floppy hat is virtually tattooed to his head. The magnificent stark brown and gold winter veld is scoured once, scoured twice, scoured again for anything that flicks, anything that flits and thing that flies. He breathes in the magical misty mornings, devours the clear azure endless skies, is transfixed by the autumn tones of the swaying grasses, the iridescent yellow and gold leaves which silently and suddenly appear at the tips of the Red Syringa bushes. This year we were lucky to be able to book into tented camp on the edge of Hwange - Zimbabwe's best kept secret "The Hide". The Hide is a magnificent thatched bush camp overlooking a waterhole, where you can lie in bed and watch the animals come down to drink. Somehow we found ourselves in the Honeymoon Suite which boasted an old colonial ball and claw bath nestling into the rocks and completely open to the surrounding bush. Even I can be tempted to watch game from a bath full of steaming hot bubbles, glass of champagne in hand,a fish eagle watching me balefully from his perch in the tree, and four giraffe and one lone bull elephant pretending not to giggle at this very strange sight !! Guests at The Hide included some of the touring Bangladesh Cricket Board and so HeeHoo was in his element discussing his favourite sport ad nauseam and soon great friendships were cemented over several bottle of good red wine ! Barry and Bridget Wolhuter who run the Hide have managed to create a formidable team around them, from Daffy the game guide to beautiful Lauren the camp hostess, the food was excellent and the decor most tasteful. The silence is immense as I write, except for the idiotic mutterings of a chain of dilly guinea fowl, the snickering of a group of shy bush buck, and in the distance, that most special of all Hwange sounds, the deep guttural grunt of hunting lion !! There is continuous traffic past the front of the open flapped tent, a fine male kudu with his harem and nursery of last years babies. A trail of pronking impala, two warthogs are fossiking in the mud, a troop of baboons are keeping a wary eye on the security detail who claps his hands and they run off a few paces in derisive defiance. "Knock knock" says Nicholas and miraculously a tray of tea appears on the veranda and in the distance the drums begin to beat to signal breakfast is being served in the boma .... e mail - <2THEHIDE@bushmail.net> +++++++ Invite Your Audience Carefully... Not everyone needs to have a front row seat in your life. There are some people in your life who need to be loved from a DISTANCE. It is amazing what you can accomplish when you let go of - or minimise your time with - those draining, negative, incompatible, 'not-going- anywhere' relationships or friendships. Observe the relationships around you. Pay close attention... Which ones lift, and which ones lean? Which ones encourage, and which ones discourage? Which ones are on a path of growth uphill, and which ones are going downhill? When you leave certain people, do you feel better or feel worse? Remember that the people you have around you will have an impact on your life, your values and your income. So, be careful when choosing the people you hang out with, as well as the information with which you will feed your mind. We should not share our dreams with negative people, nor feed our minds with negative thoughts. The more you seek quality, respect, growth, peace of mind, love and truth around you... the easier it will become for you to decide who gets to sit in the FRONT ROW, and who should be moved to the balcony of your life. You cannot change the people around you....but you CAN change the people you choose to be around! WHO IS IN YOUR FRONT ROW ??? Their families may live in small crowded houses and are already burdened with chronic shortages of food and fuel, constantly rising costs of all necessities and may lack the skills to treat their ill relatives. This is where Thembelihle can help It is a nursing home in Mpopoma which provides appropriate nursing care, good nutrition and support by skilled staff in a peaceful environment at minimal cost. His brothers jealousy sees him sold off into slavery, only to rise to fame because of his ability to interpret dreams. The show was written for a school by Lloyd-Webber and Rice in the late 1960s and in the past 30 or so years it has been staged countless times around the world, becoming a firm favourite of many people. The St Johns College production features a cast of college boys and a band made up of staff and students. A Lower Sixth student, Zoran Zec, plays the title role. HOWEVER .. while the society are doing their invaluable work so effectively with their capable staff, it is us the members of the public that they rely on for their financial needs to keep their humane facilities functioning effectively. With this economic aspect of the organisation in mind, there are several very special fund raising projects that are held on a continual and an annual bases, and one of these erstwhile projects is THE BLUE CROSS CHALLENGE, where participants are required to either walk or cycle a distance of over 500 kms from the lowest to the highest places of Zimbabwe, from the Save River banks in the eastern lowveld @ 150 Mtrs above sea level, to the peak of Mount Nyangani @ 2593 Mtrs in the eastern highlands, over a period of time ranging from 5 days for the cyclists to 14 days for the striders. The participants in this challenge must cover their own personal costs such as travel and accommodation expenses, and over and above this huge outlay on their part, also face the gruelling task of traversing the tough terrain and rough conditions faced in order to complete this mammoth task. However, it is to you that we request a donation towards raising financial support towards this project of the ZNSPCA to help towards the continuation of the animal protection program. The local Bulawayo branch of the ZNSPCA received a light utility vehicle a few years ago because of the efforts of the BLUE CROSS CHALLENGE just as an example of what can be achieved through your support, and so we ask you once again for you to dig deep into your pockets and donate towards this year's BLUE CROSS CHALLENGE fund raising project. THIS IS OUR INVITATION TO YOU TO HELP JOIN IN THE BUE CROSS ANNUAL CHALLENGE TO RELIEVE ANIMAL SUFFERING IN ZIMBABWE BY BECOMING PART OF OUR FUND RAISING TEAM FOR THIS YEAR I am once again attempting to complete this arduous task and unrivalled challenge in mental and physical stamina which begins on Monday 14th August, and although I was awarded the BLUE CROSS SHEILD OF ACHIEVEMENT in 2004 with the tireless and loving support of Jenny who is my seconder, this year we would like to be in the top end of the fund raisers and our target is to come up with over 450 million Zimdollars with your help, as financial members and participants of our team, the monies to be injected into the coffers of this worthwhile organisation. We realise that you may already donate to this and other? organisations but every added amount through our designated and allocated?donors book will help this goal of ours and I will hopefully be making personal contact with you to arrange our collection from you of your cash or cheque contribution within the next couple of weeks or so. Yesterday, my 16 year old daughter became a victim of a hit and run incident outside Greenvale Superette. The driver, a woman who was parked in a non parking zone, suddenly reversed at full speed, hitting my one daughter (who was on the zebra crossing) and narrowly missing myself and my other daughter. At this stage, being almost face to face with her, I told her through a closed window that she had hit my daughter. To my horror, she shook her head (as if I had annoyed her) and sped off in her yellow Nissan Sunny (beginning with registration numbers 570-428). Both myself and my daughter were in a state of shock but thankfully, being a sturdy child, she was not seriously hurt. My sincere thanks to the by-standers and staff of Greenvale Superette who, besides also being shocked at the incident, were extremely helpful and concerned about the welfare of my daughter. Please would the driver of the vehicle, or anyone who knows who she is, contact me as the police have so far, not been helpful. Sharon Ainscough ( nee Ashley ) ex Bulawayo ...? My computer " crashed " & I have lost your e - mail address . PLEASE contact LInda at : chantsB4@mango.zw +++++++++++++++++++ Just in case there is any body in Bulawayo who would like to know how the ex members on the Zimbabwe National Cricket Team are doing here in Britain,i thought that i would let you know. Tatenda Taibu is playing cricket for Lashings Cricket Club, and is doing well,Deon Ebrahim is playing club cricket in the Milton Keans area,i do not know how he is doing, but imagine he is playing well. Grant Flower is playing cricket for the Essex first team again,he has played 2 games of late, and hit some good scores.Andy was out for a while with a back injury,he is back now,and as per normal,,playing well. Sean Ervine has also been on the injury list,he is back and playing for Hampshire. Heath is well,he had a good innings recently for Warwickshire, and scored 58 i think it was..,not out. Ray Price sat on the bench for a few games for Worcestershire,he is back with a vengeance, and bowling exceptionally well. I have the latest rankings for the Victoria-Liverpool 4 day County Championships, each county plays 12 x 4 day games, most counties are playing their 11th game in the series. Here are the latest batting rankings. Andy Flower is 4th in the top 20 rankings,he has played 10 games, scored 981 runs, his highest score being 190 his average is 70.78 Murray Goodwin is places 11th,with 9 games,he has scored 912 runs, his highest score is 235,his average being 62.5. There are currently no Zimbabwe players rated in the top 20 bowlers for the season. Yesterday (20th),the Deutche Bank World Cup 7's competition was played at the Oval,i had the task of running 2 change rooms, looking after 8 teams, was quite a task to say the least. The final was played between South Africa and Pakistan,Sa have won it the past 2 years,Pakistan required 20 runs off of the last over..,and guess what..,go them,to every ones amazement. I casually enquired why Zimbabwe were not playing in the competition, they played in the first ever 7's World Cup in 2004,but did ot play last year,or this year. The answer i was given was, most of the chaps playing cricket here in Britain, were still in dispute with the Zcu,and the Zcu would not sanction them to play for Zimbabwe. Lets hope by 2007,the problems with Zimbabwe Cricket have been sorted out,and Zim can field a side for the World Cup 7's competition. This has meant that there are many partners, fiancees, wives and families in and around Bulawayo having to cope without the support and companionship of their partners/husbands. We are trying to set up a network of support by establishing a database of all "grass widows". We would like to try and set up a "sisterhood" of support for all those who find themselves lonely especially over weekends that seem to go on forever. By doing so, we hope to become proactive rather than reactive in the situation that we find ourselves in and to show our men that they have one less thing to worry about. By sending your details (name, contact telephone number and e-mail address) to either of the e-mail addresses below, you are indicating that you are willing to become a beacon of support to other women who are in the same situation as you. This could mean hosting a "bring-a- plate" tea at your house on a Sunday afternoon, or pulling together to take the kids out on a day trip to Chipangali or going to the Matopos on a picnic, bring-and-braais, establishing bookclubs, wine evenings; the possibilities are endless ... Depending on the response that we receive, we will make contact with all those who express an interest in this idea. We would also like to point out that this network is not limited to hunters' wives but to ALL singe moms/wives who are looking for companionship and support and to find things to do with their kids over weekends, even if this means your kids being entertained whilst you take the time for a quick cuppa with grown-up company! Finally, we take this opportunity to wish our loved ones all the best in their new ventures. May they receive the recognition that they deserve. God bless and come home soon! Please send your details to : beansie@mweb.co.zw or shearing@mweb.co.zw +++++++++++ ON THE SUBJECT OF THE COMMON COLD FROM ELSPETH ! The moment you feel that you are getting a cold - heavy head, dry throat, etc. you take a teaspoon - only a little one - of Bicarbonate of Soda in a glass of water. And you won't get the cold. It doesn't work if you take bicarb daily, in case ! It doesn't work if you wait two hours after feeling the initial symptoms, but it does help to shorten the lifespan of the cold. I have used bicarb for ages for all sorts of things - particularly on the cows in the dairy and staff. None of my staff are allowed to get a cold because of this and bicarb sits on the pantry shelf for them to take when they need it. Paul and the children are very cheery of asking for any form of muti from me - all I ever prescribe is Bicarb. Very good for 24 hour diarrhoea / vomiting. Take a teaspoon and it sends it out and brings it up and you seldom have to go again. Brilliant for burns - made into a paste, and for putting out fires - small household ones - too expensive to use commercially :~) Tenderising meat, cleaning the bottom of burn pots. Sore throats - mix one teaspoon each of salt and bicarb, put in a little bottle/container, and then lick your finger, dip it into the mixture and then lick your finger again. Important to remember that it is used for heartburn / indigestion, but should not be over used as it changes the status in you stomach and destroys the normal enzymes that digest your food. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Condolences 'Deaths: Beryl Walsh - beloved mom of Carol Warren and Kathy Hodgskin - on 10th July 2006, after battling with emphasaemia. The longings are for familiarity, for friends and family left behind, for the climate and countryside, and for the laughter in the wind of the country that will always be home. Recently someone living in exile said how much they missed the colours of Zimbabwe and it made me realise how we take the richness and beauty of Zimbabwe for granted. Winter is almost over now although we are still waking to blankets of frost sprinkled on the ground in the early mornings. The days are mostly clear, bright and sunny and the skies are a brilliant blue. The grass is golden and yellow in the fields and in the vleis and stream beds the red hot pokers have almost finished flowering. In the bush the lucky bean trees are just opening their clusters of red flowers and in our towns the poinsettias are covered in scarlet. In the highveld the Msasa trees have begun shedding their load and the ground is covered with hard, curly, deep brown pods, their shiny dark brown seeds lying in the sand waiting for the rain when they can start the cycle all over again. And to end our days are the sunsets which are filled with spectacular colour: pink and then lilac, and at last orange and polished copper. CATHY B. ++++++++ When we were hungry, the masters were eating, but they had not the eyes to see that we were hungry. --Sahiful Mondal ++++++++ Men are from earth. Women are from earth.
