Being an ardent royalist and a journalist to boot, my interest was piqued recently when one of the Bridge and Tennis Girls announced that she had been invited to a Right Royal Bash where a certain young Prince was to be a guest !!!! It transpired that the only way I would be able to get info on the Right Royal Bash, was to offer to make TeePee's Right Royal Frock !! The theme for the occasion was to be Gatsby, you know those Halcyon days of the Charleston, the flappers, the era of prohibition, the era known as the Age of Intolerance and the Age of Wonderful nonsense ...... Even the language was different then, the buzz words were "making whoopee, doing the jitterbug, having fun in the backseat of a Struggle Buggy, and drinking bootleg hooch from the local gin mill ....." The fashions in the roaring twenties were fabulous ...it was after all the romantic era. You must remember that n the 1920s, a new woman was born. She smoked, drank, danced, and voted. She cut her hair, wore make-up, and went to petting parties. She was giddy and took risks. She was a flapper. And there is no better personage than Teepee to take off that era, she is the perfect flapper, the most obvious tassel tosser !! Of course the occasion necessitated the inclusion of a few hilarious Charleston lessons on the tennis court, and then all thoughts turned to the making of the Right Royal Frock. It was much discussed and talked about but at last a discreet but also tasteful fabric of apple green satin was thought both fetching and appropriate for the occasion. Of course every flapper dress had to be fringed, but the question was, where to buy fringing in Bulawayo, especially the amount of fringing that would be needed to cover the Royal Derrière !! Much advice was given and taken over the bridge table, to the eventual exclusion even of a grand slam , but after many phone calls to friends and fashion houses, fringing suitable to festoon the Right Royal frock was at last located in vast quantities, in an elegant cream colour and the Royal dressmaker began her task. (Of course there will be no lampshades manufactured in the country for a number of months as there will be a notable dearth of available fringing.) And so, sigh....... as I stitch and sew, I can only but reminisce on how close I once came to being included in a Right Royal Bash, even if it is only as the sewer of the Right Royal Frock ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++++++++ NOTICES ROTARY HOPE FOUNTAIN Lead the way 30KM RACE & 7.5KM FOUNTAIN WALK DATE : SUNDAY 5 NOVEMBER 2006 Start : Fountain Centenary Park (Sunday 5th – 0600 Hrs) Walk – Sunday 5th – 0700 Hrs Registration : T S Matabele HQ – (near Byo Theatre) Fri 3rd – 1700 T S Matabele HQ – Sat 4th 1400 – 1600 Hrs Late Registration : At Start – Sunday 5th 0530 Hrs Registration Fees Run : Adults $5 000 Scholars $1 500 (16-19 years) Registration Fees Walk: $1 000 (per person) ALL PROCEEDS TO ROTARY CHARITIES (Advert kindly sponsored by Amtec Motors) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ FAIRYTALE FUN DAY!! They may have ulcers and skin diseases, diarrhoea and dehydration, severe nerve pains and poor nutrition. Their families may live in small crowded houses and are already burdened with chronic shortages of food and fuel, constantly rising costs of all necessities and may lack the skills to treat their ill relatives. This is where Thembelihle can help It is a nursing home in Mpopoma which provides appropriate nursing care, good nutrition and support by skilled staff in a peaceful environment at minimal cost. Relatives are also counselled and shown in a practical way how to look after the patient when well enough to go home. It is a non-Government organisation (NGO) which does not receive regular financial support from Government sources, nor from the Global HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB fund. We have received much help from Rotary, Churches, Tudor Trust, MAC and NAC and other organisations and individuals but now these sources are drying up and Thembelihle is faced with a crisis. We need ongoing funding for staff and every day expenses - about US$15 000 per month. Can any of your readers suggest potential donors whom we could contact? We have had a huge number of people coming to us for help due to the investment houses collapsing. I know this happened a few months ago but we are only beginning to feel the effects now. Many of our Pensioners have had to cancel their medical aids as they can no longer afford them, let alone feed them selves in these trying times! Our Pensioners are becoming more and more desperate, many feel they can no longer cope and are suffering from depression. The Trust has been working closely with the Bulawayo Help Network, which is an umbrella body which brings all the charities and organisations in Bulawayo together so that we can compare data thus ensuring we are not duplicating help thus helping more needy people. There are many wonderful people on this team who go beyond the call of duty to help our aged and we would just like the Pensioners to know they are never alone, there is always someone there for them no matter how bad the situation may seem. Please, if anyone knows of Pensioners that need help even if it is just someone to talk to, contact either myself or Verity at the Bulawayo Help Network on 65383. Let’s not let them give up! EMRAS AMBULANCE This is becoming a real necessity as more and more pensioners are no longer covered for ambulance. We have most of the Retirement homes covered and now have approximately 60 pensioners in pvt homes covered as well. This service is now costing Z$ 10 000 per trip, which is a reduced rate from EMRAS and I am sure it will go up in Oct due to increase of fuel. We had 8 calls in one week this is a total of $ 80000 in a week. This is one of our biggest expenses. Help us to save lives. PRESCRIPTION DRUGS Once again we have to say a huge thank you to Dr Jackie Stone, who without we would never be able to help as many Pensioners as we do, as well as all the people in Dubai who so generously help pay for the drugs. THANK YOU. This is also on the increase, we have prescriptions rolling in, as the Pensioners can no longer afford their essential life giving medications. The main medications are heart, emphysema, asthma and arthritis. CLINICS The clinics, run by Dr Willy Legg have proved to be a god send to many pensioners. Dr Legg we can only say “What wonderful work you do for our Pensioners, thank you.” We received a wonderful donation from Tzaneen RSA of non-prescription drugs, gloves, syringes and all the medications to keep the clinics going. Thank you to Edmund De Beer and his team for braving the border with all these medications. These were also distributed to the retirement homes and individuals in need. EYES We had a couple of quiet months on the eye side, due to a clinic being run, but now we are back to normal as we have more requests for glasses. This is a huge expense, the consultation is for free but the glasses are costing anything from Z$50 000 a pair upwards. This is another area that needs more funding. Can you imagine living in a permanent mist due to not being able to afford glasses! Anyone who wears glasses can relate to that, can’t you? If not then just take your glasses off! FUNDRAISERS Our next fundraiser is on the 25 November 2006, mark it in your diaries.
