Not quite "off the wall" but rather leaning towards an engaging eccentricity. She is the sort of bewitching person who might sudden;y eat a flying ant washed down with a good quality Scotch, but last week she went just a tad too far. Rain had been needed desperately, the heat had been appalling, crops and gardens were wilting, dams were drying beneath our very eyes. American Indians do a rain dance to attract rain but African superstition has it that if you catch a scorpion and hang it by its tail in a tree, multitudinous rains will occur. And so my crazy friend, in the heat of the midday sun, took it upon herself to literally dig up a scorpion and hang the hapless fellow from the branch of a wilting Mopane tree. Twenty four hours later, a veritable hurricane hit the suburb in which we both live ........ It was the Mother of all Hailstorms to use an urban cliché. The epicentre appeared to be Kumalo where they had 100 mls rain and vast drifts of hailstones. After the storm Kumalo residents made snowmen out of the ice !! Cars and houses were crushed by falling trees, gutters blocked with the ice and fallen leaves and debris, then overflowed into homes which were awash. Ceilings filled with water and collapsed. Roofs were ripped off by the winds. It was an insurance salesman's nightmare as virtually every home in Suburbs, Malindela, Kumalo, Killarney, Parklands and Ilanda had extensive water damage. The hail came in totally horizontally powered by gale force winds and in twenty minutes, that little scorpion got his revenge on us all. We in Suburbs received 40 mls rain, our carpets were flooded, trees uprooted, gardens smashed beyond recognition. Our gigantic Mozambican Fig tree, the Faraway tree to every child in Bulawayo, haven to hammerkops, gymnogenes and hundreds of bats and doves, received a battering that denuded it of seventy percent of its foliage. But the most bizarre happening was that we found thirty two dead doves under the tree when we returned unwittingly from dinner to find the storm devastation. The cats were having a field day !! The dogs brought me dazed dove after dove gently in their mouths to be transported to a warm dry recovery ward. But we still counted 32 casualties in the morning. However when the sun came up the next day the doves were despatched as dinner to a friend who runs an owl sanctuary. The Food Chain perpetuates !! The loose carpets were hauled out into the sun and the fitted carpets may or may not survive. The damage will be costly to all the residents in that area and Borealis was chastised liberally for her secret arachnid sin !! But hey, in spite of the storm, we in Matabeleland are grateful for every drop of rain no matter what shape or form it comes !!! +++++++++ NOTICES Horse Society of Zimbabwe - National Showjumping Championships. If you are around please come to our show on 29 November. LIYANA (it was raining in Sweden)! Sitting at the very back of a theatre in an industrial town in the far north of Sweden are two Zimbabweans. As the show begins we watch the audience anxiously for their reactions. As the music starts our feet automatically start tapping, our heads nodding but the audience are still – how can they not respond to that beat? We have been told that Swedes are not spontaneous and are not able to show their feelings – perhaps it is all that snow! But wait, is that a head nodding over there and surely we can feel other feet than ours tapping the floor. Song follows song getting livelier as the programme progresses. Whispers are heard as Energy pounds on his marimba, his sticks moving so fast they become only a blur; laughter as Goodwell reaches deep deep down to produce the bass note for one of the songs; awed silence as Prudence's voice fills the theatre and her Ndebele clicks echo in Swedish ears. What is this, are there people moving in their seats, has Tapiwa got them waving their hands in the air? Finally the ice melts and we relax as 400 Swedes stand on their feet and dance to the rhythms of Zimbabwe! The band is called back for an encore and the Guantanamera remix gets everyone down in front of the stage gyrating, dancing, clapping, shouting.. enjoying! What were we doing there? We travelled with Liyana, the King George VI band whom many of you will have seen at some of our shows in Bulawayo. The tour of Sweden, Netherlands and Belgium was the prize that Liyana won at the international Music Crossroads competition held in Maputo earlier this year. The tour was a wonderful experience both for the band and for the audiences of the 30 odd shows, sometimes 3 in one day! There were many aches and pains and problems but no band member missed a single show. The band is now back better than ever before and ready to entertain Bulawayo audiences once again! (Incidentally, impressions of Sweden – I never sat in an uncomfortable chair and I never saw an unattractive girl!). Don't miss LIYANA's next show at the Academy of Music, Wednesday 29 November at 5.30. We also have cds for sale at the Centre for Z$5,000. Liyana can be hired for public shows or private events – phone 230434/5 to make your booking. +++++++++++ EDITH DULY NURSING HOME MINI BAZAAR We are arranging a mini bazaar on Sat 2 Dec at 9:30 am. Several dog broking cases have been reported where hundreds of dogs given "free to good homes" have ended up as security dogs. For example a Malawian source has reported that truckloads of dogs are arriving from South Africa. Every dog traced so far has turned out to be a former pet which has been given away by its owners. These dogs have been traced because they are wearing microchips. We beg people to consider what the fate of their pets might be when they simply give them away on the assumption that they re going to a good home. These dogs are living, feeling creatures and are totally vulnerable when they fall into the hands of those who couldn't care less about them Do our animals not deserve a little compassion and respect? Many of the dogs were German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Boerboels and were not suited to working as security dogs as they had been used to being family pets. A man has been arrested under the Animal Protection Act in connection with the transport of dogs. He apparently responded to adverts offering dogs "free to good homes" Handing over a dog to an unknown person seems a most unworthy act on the part of people who claim they care about their animals. Please contact the SPCA if you are unable to keep your pet or are leaving the country. It is a much better alternative than you pet being bewildered, unloved, uncared for and possibly ill treated. ++++++ CARMEL SCHOOL PRESENTS... 'IN THE SOLITUDE OF COTTON FIELDS' is the most recognised pieces from the works of Bernard-Marie Koltes (1948-1989). Written in 1986 and published in 1987 the play has been directed by several theatre directors including the congolese director Dieudonné Niangouna. The story itself is a little uncommmon : 'One night two men meet in a certain place. Soon, they confront each other. Nothing is known of these two men, except that one is 'the Dealer' and the other is 'the Client'. The dealer is calm and gentle. It is him who approaches the Client. The Client is a tormented soul. He is unpredictable, agressive, and if the round-about speech of the dealer irritates him, well, he is equally able to do the same to him. The two men define each other, in Koltès's simple, yet polished style. All humanity and brutishness is concentrated in these two men. Feminity confronts brutality, friendship has to face agression. Throughout the play, nothing is really resolved, fear and suspicion remain ; everything is set to happen again, another night, perhaps somewhere else, without doubt, during the following day in the same place... Director: Dieudonne NIANGOUNA Interpretation : Dieudonné NIANGOUNA, Ludovic LOUPPE Light and Stage Effects : Vivien MAKOUMBOU DIEUDONNE NIANGOUNA / Director Dieudonné Niangouna was born in 1976, in Brazzaville (Republic of Congo) where he currently resides.
