The Centenary Park at Bulawayo has been for many years, the most popular rendezvous for couples to assemble for their wedding photographs to be taken. Having lived all my life just past the park, up Selborne Avenue (lately Leopold Takawira Avenue)I must have seen hundreds of happy wedding photographic forays take place. One most popular backdrop has been the fountain which was surrounded by verdant green grass, spectacular purple petria bushes, elegant palms and beautiful formal gardens. The bridal parties would stop off at the park between the church ceremony and the reception, and happily pose en famille for half an hour or so while the thirsty guests would wait impatiently for their arrival when the festivities could begin !! Dozens, nay hundreds, thousands of couples, now scattered all over the world, have wedding albums featuring the famous Bulawayo Centenary park as the backdrop to the beginnings of their years of connubial bliss. The park would boast banks of cannas, rows of agapanthas, mountains of dahlias, baskets and beds overflowing with geraniums, Barberton daisies and marigolds. One favourite Kodak moment spot was the quaint little circular gazebo where the RAR Band would play on a Sunday morning, way back in bygone days. The gazebo was artfully decorated with colonial broekie lace and it it make a most romantic backdrop for lovely young brides, draped in yards of tulle and spectacular bridal gowns lovingly made of Italian guipure lace and finished off with the obligatory diamante tiara. Bob Hardman was the person in charge of the park for many years and under his loving care, our park would feature frequently in tourist guides and articles on the City Of Kings, as Bulawayo is known to this day. As the park sadly became less and less cared for, water became a problem, it has become unkempt and ugly. However the area around the fountain still attracts wedding parties but to a much lesser extent. Nowadays there is very little guipure lace to be seen, but the colonial habit lives on and modern brides love to assemble there with their retinues. African tradition has it that one must have in attendance, at least seven bridesmaids, an equal number of matrons of honour and even a tiny young replica bride for some customary reason !! Bridal parties from the fifties right up until the nineties, when money was plentiful in Zimbabwe, tried their hardest to outdo each other in the number of attendants !! Colours too became the in thing with a vast retinue of attendees in violets, crimsons, tangerines or turquoises !! The groomsmen and best men too wore all manner of top hats and tail coats with matching pocket hankies and cravats. Friday mornings in recent years, were the most popular days when couples had stopped off at the Registry office to make their vows and then car loads of wedding supporters, balloons festooning every possible crevasse and cranny of posh cars, would stream down to the park for pikkies. Mercedes, Rolls Royce, Pajeros, limos and even a London Taxi were begged borrowed or purloined for the occasion and sales of ribbon trim soared.... Nowadays however the park is ominously quiet. The photographers still mass there hoping for a commission, but there is no longer any money for a fancy wedding. One occasionally comes across a much smaller wedding party, with one or two bridesmaids, but those days of lavish entertaining are now far behind us. The park too gets grimmer and grimmer, pity any hapless tourist who makes his way there on foot to feast his eyes on what his copy of "Zimbabwe on a Dollar a Day " promises !! The grass is high and dry, the fountain works sporadically. 80% of the population is unemployed and 75% of them are sleeping in despair on the once green and manicured lawns. When will this madness end ? ++++++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +++ 2 NOTICES ART MUSIC AND BRAAI! What could be better for a Sunday afternoon? So many of the old Bulawayo families mentioned from the very early 1950s when the Misses Rhodes laid the foundation stone, then when the Queen Mother opened the centre. We even have boxes of photos from way back and I found the Chronicle supplement for the 25th Celebrations for KGVI. This was sponsored by so many companies, many of them still around today like Naakes, C Gauche, Dae-Nite, Smart & Copley, Stevensons, Geddes but some that seem to have disappeared like DIT Prosthetics, Bogdans, Johnstones, Eli's Services, Thelwalls Garage. Perhaps some of your readers can throw some light on this time August 1979. This same article mentioned one of the first pupils Sandra James who represented Rhodesia and won several medals in paraplegic games. What can anyone tell us about her or any other pioneer pupils? On 28 March I attended a very enjoyable celebration for Archer Clothing's 50th anniversary and so many people approached me and said my sister/cousin/ uncle or whoever used to go to KGVI. Surely some of them must still be around or their families. We would love to have some of these early KGVI 'pioneers' come and join us for our lunch on Saturday 7 July. Wouldn't it be great to have someone to represent each of the 50 years. Please help us by contacting anyone you know who used to be connected to KGVI and ask them to contact us on 230434/5 or my direct line 255323. When I awoke on the morning of Saturday 31st March, the nightmare of a miserable day had come true. It was not long before the phone calls started, "Is it still on?" to which I replied, "Yes!" So everyone carried on with their duties, and the day went as planned. By 10.00am the sun started to show its face and we all gave sighs of relief! The `Help Make A Difference' Fund raise, was a huge success. Everyone who attended had a good time and kids all round had a ball! Although our volunteers where extremely busy, they too enjoyed the events that took place. Thanks to everyone involved, the day went smoothly, and wasn't even over by the time I left to go home, at 3.00am. Fifteen ladies in total shaved their heads, three of which only decided on the day, and many more men and children joined in too. Well-done baldies! Almost everything that we required for the day, was kindly donated, so we practically had a 100% profit. As all the funds have not yet been collected it is hard to give a total amount, but to date we have managed to raise over $50,000,000 THANK-YOU! - To every one who attended: Without the good turn out, the day would have been a waste of time. - All the volunteers: There were over 40 volunteers to help make the day a success! - All the donators: Many people and companies contributed to the products and equipment required. - MacDonald Sports Club: They could not have done more to accommodate us, before and during the fund raise. - Our 15 Bald chicks: Very brave but MAD! This event alone raised nearly half of the total amount! S.O.A.P and The Cancer Association could not be more grateful for the efforts, and give a huge thank-you. Organising this event in our current climate, has made me realise that Bulawayo is a wonderful place to live! If we can do this together, we can do anything! As long as we help one another and stay a strong community. Thanks to everyone for the support, Kerrie Smith. ++++++++ BULAWAYO COUNTRY CLUB TENNIS SECTION is appealing to all current and past tennis members for donations towards the re- surfacing cost of Court No. 5. I want to thank you so much for all your entertaining and interesting articles. They all do so much to bring back memories for all those displaced people. I was at Falcon, and have admitted to riding the Bumps of Bulawayo on and old Harley Davidson motorbike circa 1961. I have also been/am involved with bringing back memories to people, and to this end have published a book called Rhodesian Memories, which is a conglomeration of stories and articles from about 100 contributors. The whole thing has brought me pleasure because of the people who have contacted me to say that they have enjoyed the nostalgia, and so I wanted to pass a little of that to you. Chris Higginson. higginson.chris@ gmail.com ++++++++ I was a Grey Street Cowboy, but on a motor bike - in those days I had a Triumph Tiger Cub (200cc)[bought from John Love Motors in Fort Street around 14th Ave, if I remember rightly] and used to love going down Grey Street, particularly closer to 1st Avenue where the dips were closer together and one could get the bike to leave the ground and more or less miss the second dip. Great fun - somewhat dangerous though, not that we ever thought of that. The poem by the RAF chap also rings a bell, but I think there was another one called "Bloody Bulawayo!!" which was of course not so complimentary. Having been at Fairbridge, we had a lot of association with the RAF at Heany, for they used the Induna airfield for circuits and bumps. I personally used to spend weekends and school holidays with a family in the married quarters - my first experience of being inebriated and the next morning consequences was as a result of a visit to the Sergeant's Mess!! The family had a 28" bicycle and as my legs were not long enough to reach the pedals when over the cross bar I managed to master the art of riding it with my leg under the cross bar, in general leaning the bike out sideways as though it was going around a corner - never quite sure how I managed it, but rode all over Heany base till I knew it intimately; so a later visit in another uniform was not such a traumatic experience. Q.G. From: gibs@mweb.co. za +++++++ FATHER ODILO I believe I own the readership a short explanation of my request in M.M. 233. Fr Odilo left a mountain of documents after his death in June of last year and the privilege of cataloguing and classifying them for ready access by prospective researchers in the future is a privilege which has come my way. The photographs, papers and memorabilia make a Mt Inugu of material. To give a small insight into the task I have just worked through all the sermons for the 1960, 70s and 80'. But it all goes back to 1938! His interests and involvement reveal his many faceted talents..... astronomy, Rotary, the Matopos, and wild life and so on. Add all this to the founding of Missions, schools and rural hospitals, running a Parish and being the Superior of his Community for nearly a decade one discovers a heart and soul rooted in a deep love for Matabeleland. My daughter in law in Canberra Australia sent me a `link' to look at, and there was your article asking after `Sonia Hattin and Adrienne Verney'!!! What a surprise I had when I saw it. I think Wooty must have gone back to England. My last memory of him, was when I was organising a cooking demo with Wooty in the new Parkade and he made me cook a special omelette which he had just shown the audience every detail of just how to do it, and then called on me to repeat his performance. I was busy doing other things at the time and had not paid much attention. Well of course my egg almost landed on the floor when my pan caught fire, and most unfortunately my brother was there taking a picture of it all as evidence!!! Yes, Sonia and I are both in S.A. I had Xmas with Sonia and her daughter Jane, in Franschoek last year and they are all very well! We get together when we can as Sonia is actually in Hermanus, and I have my own company which keeps me busy training senior management Media and Presentation training. So I am still working in the environment of `camera - lights & action'! Whilst reading your web sight, I reflected on how wonderful it is to hear the `old humour' in spite of everything! We watch in horror at the news. Our love and thoughts go to all the special people still there, and know the madness has to stop. Everything a human needed Was in the grocery store And what you could not carry You could come back for more. First I got some Patience Love was in the same row Further down was understanding You need that everywhere you go. I got a box or two of Wisdom And Faith a bag or two And Charity of course I would need some of that too. I couldn't miss the Holy Spirit He was all over the place And then some Strength And Courage to help me run this race. My basket was getting full But I remembered I needed Grace And then I chose Salvation for Salvation was for free I tried to get enough of that to do For you and me. Then I started to the counter To pay my grocery bill For I thought I had everything To do my Master's will. As I went up the aisle I saw a Prayer and put that in For I knew when I stepped outside I would run into sin. Peace and Joy was plentiful They were the last things on the shelf Song and Praise were hanging near So I just helped myself. Then I said to the angel "Now how much do I owe?" He smiled and said "Just take them everywhere you go". Again I asked "Really now, How much do I owe?" "My child" he said "God paid your bill, A long time ago" MASCA CHUCKLE N' CHAT ++++++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +++ 8 SAD SERIES You may never know what results come from your action.
