DALAI LLAMA ++++++ There's no need to play the `what if' game. The past is gone, and no energy you expend will ever change it. The future is in God's omnipotent hands, so you're free to focus on the present. Your job is to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, trusting Him to forgive the past and transform the future. Martyred missionary Jim Eliot once wrote, "Wherever you are, be all there," not living in the past and not fantasising about the future. God wants you in the present because that's where His grace will flow. ++++++ Sometimes our fate resembles a fruit tree in winter. Who would think that those branches would turn green again and blossom, but we hope it, we know it. --Johann Wolfgang von Goethe +++++++++ PLEASE SEE TWO DELIGHTFUL PICTURES OF THE OLD MATOPOS HOTEL ON THE MIRROR WEBSITE - THANK YOU ADRIAN BOLZE FROM BOOKS OF ZIMBABWE. ========== What would I say to Paddy Vickery if I were to meet her right now ? I would say "thank you for giving me a love for learning and literature, second to none....." Do you remember Paddy Vickery ? Any girls attending Eveline School in the fifties, sixties and seventies will never forget her. Paddy is living in the UK right now, in Surrey to be exact, goodness knows how old she is but she is sprinting off this month to visit relatives in Cape Town, I am sure she is probably just as spry as she was when she was teaching us reprobates way way back. It was Audrey Edington, an English teacher at Girls' College , who made such an impression on my own daughters, and it was Paddy Vickery, also an English teacher, who made such a difference to my life. It all started with "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Graham. Mrs Vickery used to read it to us when we were in Form two. That voice !! it was glorious, full, sweet, resonant, so delicious to listen to, and the perfect way to start an undying love for all that is Englsh and all that is English Literature. As we paddled along the river bend with Paddy, a longing to hear more, read more, and to learn more was instilled in each and every one of us. With Toad, Ratty, badger and Otter we were transported into realms of delight that no modern child will probably ever know.... No matter how hot, no matter how tired, as teenage girls, we lived from English lesson to English lesson. Audrey Edington is off to the U.K. too soon. Why are we losing our most precious of all resources, the men and woman educators who made the difference in our lives, and for whom we must thank more than words can say. No thanks can ever be enough for everything we ourselves have done, learned , said and written, thanks to very special people like Paddy Vickery ad Audrey Edington. +++++++ MATRONS WISH LIST ! Have you ever seen a bar of Zimbabwe Soap ? It is quite different to any other soap you are used to.... First Wold Soap is generally oval shaped, comes in a variety of delicate colours, perfumes and sizes and holds nicely in the palm of the hand. Zimbabwe soap on the other hand has character !! The colours used in the soaps are vibrant to say the least "Screaming Pink" ""Awful Orange" "Blasphemous Blue" and "Ghastly Green "......(apologies to the manufactures ... I know darn well that beggars should not be choosers !! The sizes of the soaps are interesting, many Zimbabweans prefer a colossal bar of soap for some reason, so large that if it drops on your toe in the shower, it is instant hospitalisation. HeeHoo likes the latter variety, far too large for my delicate paw, so I have to keep a left- over piece of his soap nestling on a ledge for personal usage. The perfumes too, are larger than life, maybe that's why one of the brands is called "Lifebuoy" ? No there is nothing, absolutely nothing delicate about a Zimbabwe soap perfume. You can smell us coming for miles !! But the most peculiar characteristic of a Zimbabwe bar of soap, is that it has wings !! Yes, one can think fondly of our soaps, until they are absolutely unobtainable on any shelf in any shop in any city.... Then one breathes fire at the attributes of the Soap. The ever so posh Bulawayo Club, (wot even entertained Her Majesty once !! ) Has taken to cutting the bars of soap into miniscule pieces in the hope that they might last a little longer (a retrogressive step in any other country I agree, but quite necessary in this country of winged soap.) You see, soap is at a premium, so no matter how many pieces an hotel, a club or a restaurant or a nursing home, lays out carefully in the bathroom, it will disappear in a flash and a blur !! Now Matron at the Edith Duly Nursing Home has a wish list, and as far as we are able, her Committee tries to make Matron's wishes come true. And so to this end, i am appealing to people who live in countries where the their Soaps do not grow wings, to send us some heavy metal liquid soap dispensers that we can fix securely to the walls ..... Aaah the vagaries of living in Zimbabwe .... there is no where quite like it !! We just love it. !! e mail magskriel@mac. com ++++++++ 2) WEEKLY WATER WATCH PEASE SEND US YOUR WATER SAVING TIPS TIPS FOR COPING WITH WATER CUTS For those who cannot afford to have boreholes, pumps, storage tanks, etc When carrying water do not suffer from 'Lazy man's load' - heavy loads. Many older (and not so older) people are trying to carry heavy buckets of water - make two trips instead carrying half each time. You won't suffer from strained muscles and the extra walking will do no harm. Or carry two smaller equally balanced containers, one in each hand. When filling up your toilet cistern, rest the container on the edge while pouring. If it is a closed container, not a bucket, rest it on it's side and let it run till it stops - half the container usually does the job. Then flush if required, and without removing the container fill the cistern again (container may then be empty). This means only one lift for two flushes ! Many of us are bathing from our wash basins, if your bath is near your washbasin, you may be able to stand your container on the edge of the bath. Then the lift or tilt to the washbasin is much easier. Africa Dawn Safaris +++++++++ 3) NOTICES SOCIAL MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE Sunday, 2nd December 2007 From Camp Dwala, Eastern Matopos. Last week a black & white cat was killed on Cecil Ave (Banff/Essex Road area). Three days later it emerged that she had left behind five kittens. We think these little babies are about a month old. Mr Smith led a rebel regime for nearly 14 years after the Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1965. During his turbulent years in power, he fought a guerrilla war against factions of the majority black population. It was a struggle he eventually lost, paving the way for the country's independence as Zimbabwe in 1979. +++++++ The passing of Ian Smith is truly a sad time in Rhodesian History. I can remember as a teenager attending a rugby match and Mr. Smith walking next to me and greeting me as if he personally new me. What a humble man. Not a body guard visibly hovering around him. How different to current times. Thoughts and prayers are with his daughter at this time. Limerick Rd/Percy Ave. Hillside Featured Speaker: LESTER KELLY acclaimed International Evangelist along with his team from Australia +++++++++ UPDATE ON VERITY AMM It is a few months since the last report on the situation. There has been a big turnover at the Cottages due to ever rising costs with families deciding to make other arrangements and, of course, anno dominae, which, in turn affects the smooth running of activities at the Centre. We will shortly be losing more of the capable and active residents, unfortunately as the economy continues to bite and food availability does not improve. The soup kitchen has survived a year but it is becoming more and more difficult to find volunteers and men in particular who can help with the huge pots We cater for around 40 a time.. But, we press on. There is now quite an extensive video library and books for the main library are received quite frequently. Members pay $10 for a book or a donation, Zim dollars that is! Our new librarian is 81 years old and was bitten by a cat at the complex last year which continues to give her great problems. The hall has been hired out for functions and is used for a lot of inside socials and meetings and by religious groups. Unfortunately our Administrator and her husband, who keeps the hall in spotless condition, have been persuaded to join their family in Namibia. We will miss them hugely but do wish them well. We are, therefore urgently needing the services of a couple to fill the position. Anyone interested please ring 255611 or e-mail rickwood@gatorzw. com On the whole it has been the most difficult year yet and one pensioner was pleased to tell me that her pension had been raised to Z$2.5 million! Unfortunately millions are worth nothing in fact two = gbp1. In the circumstances we cannot expect to cover costs from within. She is one of the lucky ones. Many are turning their hands to craft work and make shopping bags and door stops in particular using any scraps they can get hold of. One lady does beautiful flower arranging and there is much talent generally. One resident has got the vegetable garden productive again but is, of course, limited in the amount of work he can do. Generally most of the men are still working be they in their 70's or 80's and need to continue until they drop quite literally. Life has been tough for the oldies in 2007. One lady approached me as she was fearful her husband would lose his job and they had nothing to fall back on. I asked about her family to be told they did not want to know as she was getting Altzheimers! On behalf of all members I would like to give a huge 'thank you' to the many people and companies both in Bulawayo and, in fact, all over the world who have been so very generous in cash and kind and enabled us to carry on helping to make the life of our oldies a little easier. We have managed the two soups a week but without meat now although recently donations have been received which enabled meals to be provided which were hugely appreciated. I am told they were also able to enjoy hot chocolate and marshmallows for morning tea on several occasions - a real treat. JUMBLE SALE - We intend to hold a jumble sale just as soon as we have enough so ladies, if you are on the move or simply clearing your places please remember your junk may be someone else's treasure and anything will be gratefully received at Verity Amm Hall next to Coronation Cottages and will, in its turn, help us to do more for our people. Grateful thanks also go to Margaret Kriel and the Morning Mirror which has been so very helpful in enabling us to carry on the work. The Christmas party season is now upon us and parties have been arranged to include residents at many other homes and complexes and there will be a chance to go to Grannies' night at the theatre - not a panto this year, unfortunately. How about adopting a Granny this year to join in your festivities? Many have no families of their own here any more and Christmas can be the loneliest time of the year for them. We take this opportunity to wish all a very happy festive season and improvements in the life style in 2008. - God Bless! Juliet Rickwood Chairman, Exec Com. I have been involved in tennis coaching in the province for 13 years with the junior and senior squads and recently wheelchair tennis development for 3 years. I do appeal for help to enable one of my students Nyasha ,Mharakurwa to travel to South Africa for the ACSA East London Open from the 27th to the 30th of November and the South African Open in Pretoria , 5-8 December 2007. He is a wheelchair tennis player with a congenital deformity and recently graduated with an Honours Degree in Administration (UZ), he has been playing wheelchair tennis for the past three years and has played two tournaments on the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tour in South Africa. The first tournament was the Free State Open in February where he got to the semis and quarter finals in the doubles and singles respectively. Recently, he competed in the ACSA Limpopo Open where he was runner up in both singles and double. For this great achievement he earned a world ranking of 160 in singles and 178 in doubles. From the responses we have received we must clarify that the 10% witholding tax has nothing to do with VAT.It relates to income tax. If you are in business either as an individual or as a company you must examine every transaction. If the amount being paid by you is more than $500 000 and you do not hold an ITF263 tax clearance form from your supplier then you must withhold 10% of the value. Recently Zimra have correctly garnered penalties and interest on persons who did not hold the 10% on fuel supplies. The fact that the fuel is exempt from VAT has nothing to do with the 10% w/tax. The section that governs the withholding tax was brought in to aid Zimra in bringing the informal sector to pay some taxes. If your supplier does not have an ITF263 then it means his income taxes are not up to date or he doesn`t have a tax file. You are then in effect paying his taxes for him, plus penalty ,plus interest? Is it worth it? Be very careful that the invoice marries with the Form ITF 263.If the names are different or he has put his trading name instead of his company name , Zimra will penalise you. She fitted in well with their other dogs and was the family favourite. Unfortunately for Alice, her family had to leave Zimbabwe and a 'good' friend took Alice as she was a young dog. Her second family, it seems, did not bond with her and looked upon this energetic dog as a nuisance. Time went by and poor Alice was once again moved on. She found herself in a worse predicament with very little food, not much love but this plucky little dog made the most of the situation, until one day in hunger, she killed some chickens. We were called to collect this dog and it broke my heart to see her emaciated condition. She is with us at the Bulawayo SPCA where she will get food and plenty of tender, loving care. Hopefully some kind person will give her a loving home she deserves. The loofahs used in the soaps, grow wild off the tender clinging vine - the luffa aegyptiaca - in the lowveld and the Zambezi Valley. They are handpicked by villagers who live in these remote areas, and are delivered to us from as far as 500kms by various modes of transport. The loofahs are then sun dried, peeled, washed, de-seeded and dried again. Hand selection takes place in selecting the correct size loofah to fit the mould. The soap is made using high percentages of natural oils which are poured over each loofah. We wait for the soaps to set and then each is individually removed from the mould and trimmed and polished by hand. The wrapping and packing process takes place by hand. We believe that this is what makes our product so unique - you really have a piece of Africa in your hands. Enjoy our products they are naturally a part of Africa. At present the range consists of: - Loofah Soaps Glycerin Soaps Exotic Bath Soaks Sugar Bath Cubes Endangered Guest Soaps Not forgetting our unique Earthchild Eau de Parfum Which come in six exciting African inspired fragrances - Zambezi Wild Berry - Zambezi Rain Forest - Marula and Jojoba Oil - Baobab and Tea Tree Oil - Rose Oil and Apricot -----soon to be replaced by African Love flower. - Savannah Aloe afearthworks@ mweb.co.zw +++++++++ LOOKING FOR: A 60hp boat motor with controls in good working order A second hand smallish boat, e.g. 13ft with about a 40hp motor, with bass motor, full house willing to pay with real money..... Councilor Len Sexon chaired the meeting which was attended by a large crowd from the area. Also present was Fr Otto Grimm in what was probably his last year as the local Catholic parish priest. When the speakers had all made their presentations, the meeting was opened to questions. After a while, Fr Grimm raised his hand and was invited to put his question. He explained that although he was German by birth he had only recently become a naturalised citizen, and he wanted to ensure that he understood exactly what would happen in the election. The party representatives were only too happy to oblige. "I understand," he said, "that the three gentlemen on the platform are standing for election to Parliament." There were nods from the platform. "And if they are elected, " Fr Grimm went on, "they will sit in Parliament?" Again nods and agreement from the platform. "The perhaps they can tell me," he went on innocently, "that if they are elected, they will not also lie in Parliament?" There was a moment of stunned silence, then the meeting erupted in laughter,in which the speakers on the platform joined.
