People are working furiously to try and get the country off its knees, full marks to everyone who is working tirelessly for the good of us all. (Are you doing your bit ?) Civic societies are rising up in waves to bring about very necessary change - Zimbabwe Redevelopment Focus, Free Zimbabwe, Facebook has a plethora of excited groups where people gather to help the Country come right. Justice and Peace Commissions, Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, Zimbabwe Democracy and Development Foundation, Clean up the Cities campaigns. The Sterp (Short term emergency recovery programme) seems to be working well, and everyone is waiting with baited breath to see who will triumph in the Biti/Gono standoff.... . Suddenly things are happening in the City, there are loads of goods on the shelves again, prices are dropping steadily as more competition arrives. In TM Supermarket in Bradfield yesterday, a wine tasting display had been set up to promote imported wines, when did you last see a tasting demonstration of any sort in the shops here ? At my favourite haunt Solomons Supermarket they had a special "buy one sugar get one salt free !!" Now when did that last happen in Zimbabwe ??? We saw an ice cream vendor yesterday, I have not seen an ice cream vendor in years !! Mines seem to be on the verge of opening again, factories are dusting off the cobwebs and there is a new air of expectancy about the entire population. What we do need to do now is "Buy Zimbabwe" again so that our manufacturers can start manufacturing, our suppliers can start supplying and the wheels of our once abundant industries can start turning once again. One can afford to get sick again as the Medical Aids have emerged from the ashes. Of course all payments are in forex, but if you have any money in the bank you can now draw it out and spend it. Such joy, only we folk who have gone through the last two years of hell on earth, can appreciate such simple pleasures. Phone calls can now be made, even log distance calls which believe me, are a true luxury. Power cuts are becoming less and less frequent. We still do not receive any utility bills in the post but they are still so insanely high that maybe thats a good thing. Fuel can now be purchased the normal way - from a service station !! instead of decanting it from a chigub in the garage !! The best thing about it all is that we are now legal !! We can deal openly and honestly in any currency without fear of prosecution. No need to write to our friends talking in shackle, British pounds were termed "daffodils" or "Blairs" , South African Rands were couched as "Boerevors" and a Bushes was a pseudonym for the good old US dollar now comfortably and casually called a "User" !! Of course I speak frivolously here for only a few lucky folk in Zimbabwe. I do not speak for the ninety percent of people in our country who are unemployed, I do not speak for the sick, the poor and the elderly, I do not speak for those who have no one overseas sending them forex. I pray that one day all Zimbabweans will be happy, warm, well fed and secure again under a new Government where human rights and dignity actually means something. A Zimbabwe where democracy and a respect of all that is good and all that is honest, and all that is right, prevails once more. There are still many many sadly neglected areas to be sorted out, and many billions of dollars and many years of toil will be needed to bring our Country back to some semblance or order, but there's no stopping us now - Please God. Parenting can prove to be a very rewarding experience in one's life. We would all agree that children today, thanks to exposure to so much information from various sources, are very different from children a few years ago. Because of the changes in our lifestyles, values and human relations viz. working couples, nuclear families, media exposure, single parents etc., in the recent past, parenting is also becoming a challenge with parents having to deal with many issues related to children's behaviour. Often parents are found saying some of the following : a) He does not listen to me. b) She does not eat properly at all. c) My children are so hyperactive, it is so difficult to control them. d) They are glued to TV or computer games all the time. e) They run away from studies and many more. KNOW YOUR CHILD is a two hour interactive seminar from the Art of Living Foundation which helps parents deal with several such issues by finding the root cause behind them. It gives them an insight into how children think and thus a better understanding of their behaviour. It point that small things that adults tend to overlook that may have a deep impact on children. Several hundred such workshops have been conducted benefiting many thousands of parents making their relationships with their children much more harmonious. GOD BLESS FROM ALL OF OUR "GOLDEN OLDIES" +++++++ INTERESTING VIEWS FROM A ZIMBABWEAN ABROAD ON EARTH HOUR AND OTHER THINGS Well I took a peek outside my window and was blinded by the lights it appeared I was the only poor sod heeding the call in my local neighbourhood. Surprisingly Australia has a good number of pretty old cars, I've even seen a few Datsun 120Y's! On a similar note, there was a news report here on the local TV warning/informing the public of how toxic the fumes from petrol is, they used some sort special camera that has technology to film the fumes while a random person was filling their tank at a station, so anyway these fumes are really harmful to the person filling up his/her tank. So what's new, we just live on a poisoned planet. So in the grand scheme of things Margaret, being born in Africa has its advantages, Africa lags behind in development, so the air there is just that much cleaner. So do me a favour step out into your garden and take a deep breath of fresh air for me : ) By the way I purchased a pack of recycled toilet paper at the local supermarket - what dreadful quality! Our recycled toilet paper in Zim was/is far superior (not sure if softex and others are still operational) . But then we had been recycling stuff long before it became "environmentally correct or fashionable" , UDI had its positive side. Oh another thing I'm a little peeved, I bought a bottle of Mazoe from a shop that sells SA goodies and the Mazoe was the only Zim item they had. The next time I went there, they had Mazoe but it wasn't made in Zimbabwe, it was made in South Africa! What on earth happened to Schweppes in Zim? Did they close down? Relocate? I am spitting mad, Mazoe is a Zimbabwean icon and we have so few, what's up with that? Do you know anything about this Margaret? The Australian's were hopping mad a year ago when their icons Vegemite and Tim Tams were bought over by an American company, so I guess I should shut up and accept globalisation. thoughts from Mahendra in Oz +++++++ Herewith some feed back (excuse the pun) from the Old Age Homes Dinner held at the Verity Amm Hall on Friday 27th March for Coronation Cottages. As always the people of Bulawayo rallied together to make a fun night for the Old Folk, the hall was filled to capacity, in all about 200 people including about 30 volunteer helpers and the local security guards were fed. There was even an excess of food which was dropped off at the Barbara Burril Blind Home the next day, enough to feed the 24 Residents and the staff of the Barbara Burril Blind Home for a few days! For accountability reasons a special mention and thanks needs to be made to the following generous people who helped make the occasion possible:- Bruce Parnham and Tammy Glendinning (Ascot Farm Fresh) for the fresh veggies. Mr. & Mrs. John Dicey for their generous cash donation and for coming all the way from Gwanda to play their mouth organ, guitar and piano accordion music on the night. Mr. & Mrs. Bill Graney (SA) for the imported tinned fruit and 5 liters of cooking oil. Rory and Lee Nesbit for the sherry. Ian and Paula McKenzie for the fresh veggies and cooldrinks. Boetie York for the discounted meat, and for cutting of the meat. John Sharpe for the cash donation. Pete Moss ( SA) for the cash donation. Terence and Sarah McAllister, who help to make the meal possible, for their help in cooking, for the drinks and the fantastic quiz prizes . Oliver Nurden ( Olly) for the imported cokes and help on the night. Shylocks Hairstylists for the prizes. Sedgemore Dairies, for the milk and cream. George Kaufman (SA) for the canned veggies. Andre Zietsman for the drinks. Mike McAllister for the ice-cream. Allan Ogden for the drinks. Lori and Chris Albon for the DVD. Mo and Ishmael of Jasbro for the rice. Jackie Ogsten Willows of Ref-Air for the personal delivery of Ice and Puddings on the night. Lesley Clift for the rice. Shane and Sharon Raaf for the veggies and help on the night. The anonymous kind Lady who was shopping in the Rand Shop, for the rice ??? Darren Winterbore for the donation. The Staff of Coronation Cottages, and especially Lisa for all the help and for the use of the Hall, cutlery and utensils. Wayne Radue and Rose Blair for the singing and help. Avril Jardine for the preparation, help, prizes and compeering on the night . Scott Brown and Warren King for the sound preparation and DVD presentation, and help on the night. The Rock Christian Church Youth band for the music and help on the night. Sandy Evans for her CD player, and help on the night. The fantastic Ladies from the Rock Church ( too many to name) for all the fantastic Puddings and the help. All the many willing Ladies, Gents, Youth and Kids of the Rock Church, who came on the night to help prepare the hall, to serve, to wash and to clean up afterwards, without whom it would not have been possible to have the meal. Little Tamlyn Ogilvy and Emma Raaf for the flute playing and entertainment. The sisters and friends of some of the Rock congregation, whose names I don't know? And for all the other people whose names I may have forgotten to mention, I apologize? Its really amazing just how the people of Byo rally together to support this type of function especially when its for the Old Folk, and even more amazing when people give of themselves to help, to serve and are not even asked to do so. they just make themselves available, with a servants heart ! Many of those who gave towards this dinner were battling financially themselves ! Mags, whilst we are on the subject, there is a tremendous need for help at the Ingutsheni Hospital, people are dying of hunger, 3 patients have died from starvation just this last week, and there will be many more unless we, the citizens of Byo, do something about it!! There is a very dedicated group of people being driven and motivated by Messias (tel no 0912842164) Willy and Nicky (tel no 011713258) and Paula (tel no 0912568028) who give faithfully of the time as often as possible especially Fridays when they go into the Hospital, with food and themselves, to give of their time, because they have been there and seen the need themselves. WHAT can you the MM readers do to help? Nearly everyone is happy to help in one way or another, to do something, or to give something even if it is only time, but the problem is that they have to be prompted or asked. If you wait for any more asking its going to be too late !! Innocent People are dying and we have to, we need to do something. Tomorrow is going to be too late for some !! There is some left over cash that was given to me as a donation to do what ever I thought was necessary, I trust that the givers approve for it to go towards food for Ingutsheni !! Regs Graham Jardine. +++++++++++ STOLEN VEHICLE As many of you have heard, on Monday (23.03.09) I had a bad experience. When I returned home at 9pm, there were 2 men waiting in my garden, who held me up at knife point, ransacked my house looking for money, and stole a number of items - the most important being my car and my laptop. I am a bit battered and bruised both physically and mentally, but otherwise fine. I am very grateful to my neighbours who have rallied round me and given me so much support & help - in particular Beryl Castle Ward and Marilyn & Peter Sissons. My thanks also to all the many people who have contacted me to wish me well - I really appreciate your kindness and concern. While I know it is unlikely any of the property will be recovered, lucky coincidences do happen. So I list below details of the car and laptop. Also in the car were all the paper related to Marwell Zimbabwe Trust's 2008 accounts - a cardboard box containing 6 box files. As these have no value to anyone else they may well have been dumped, so if you see a box of files lying at a dump or in an alley way, please check them out as we would be very pleased to recover the documents. My wife Mary Ann and her brother Barry both work at a large hospital in our city Christchurch NZ, Barry being an Orderly there tending to the needs of mainly old folk. Well yesterday Barry told Mary Ann that an elderly lady in one of the wards told him she was from Rhodesia and had taught some Fairbridge children there, so Barry told her he had a copy of 'Windows' about Fairbridge compiled and published by me and would be pleased to lend it to her. What are the odds of this meeting and connection revelation happening??? I phoned Barry last night saying I would like to meet her personally and give her a courtesy free copy. This meeting with her took place at 2.00pm today, Friday. Her name is Shirley Barker and she was born in Salisbury, in due course teaching at Evelyn Girls High School in Bulawayo in the 1950s/60s where she said she taught some of our Fairbridge girls. She was most appreciative in being given a copy of the book but said she only had a few days to live so was reluctant to take it. I insisted this was more reason for her being given this gift so she asked me to say a few choice words in it and sign it, which I did. I showed her photos of the girls in the book saying, from memory, Susan and Nina Charman, Betty Wood, Sylvia Pettitt and some of the others in the photos went to Evelyn, and two of these names rang a bell to her. We had a nice chat and she said she and her husband shifted to South Africa in the 1980s and when he died she came to NZ then her daughter and husband moved to Oz where they now are - that she would ensure the book was passed on to her for safe keeping. When telling her I was 71 she said she was 74, so this will put a time-frame to it, and she is taking her medical position very calmly. Then the nurse came in to check her out so time for me to leave. I told her I would pass a message of our meeting on to all our Fairbridge people, so she would suddenly be 'world famous', which made her chuckle! She asked me to pass on her regards to any of us she might have taught. A very nice lady and I am pleased to have made this effort to meet her personally. If any of you do remember her and have any nice message to give her then please send it to me and I will get Barry to give it/them to her. She did say some of the Fairbridge girls were a bit naughty, but then who of us weren't?!!! Best Wishes Peter peter.gould@ xtra.co.nz ++++++ ADD YOUR SIGNATURE TO THIS !! There is a big lounge with comfortable seating, Sky+ TV, DVD player and for those pianists among you, a beautiful 1830 Collard grand piano!!!! We also have full Broadband Internet access and ability to phone abroad using Skype (much cheaper!) A large dining room with fine antique furniture is available to residents for scrumptious Zim breakfasts. Lunch and dinner is available at extra cost and from a set menu. If so, I can coach your son or daughter in the above subjects, having had 35 years experience teaching these subjects. I take only one student at a time, which ensures that the student has individual attention and help. Are you having problems with expensive inflexible payrolls? If so, I can develop an extremely reasonably priced tailor made payroll system for your business, mine, farm or institution. I also offer computer courses in MS Windows operating system, MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheet, MS Access database, MS Project Project Design, desk top publishing, AutoCAD computer aided design, MS Outlook Express e-mail, Internet browsing and search, Corel Draw, Corel PhotoPaint graphic design and digital photography.
