Stepping out in my Bata pata patas.

How I long to walk down Selborne Avenue in my Bata pata pata's not a care in the world.
Flip flopping along I would go to buy mangoes in the market on Lobengula Street.
Mealie cobs roasting on the side of the road. The sweet burnt aroma wafting up with the smoke into the blue African sky.
Sharing a watermelon with a friend on a hot sticky day
Pocket money well spent.
Eating a mango on the back stoep,
Biting into the sweet nectar - heavenly, ecstasy - yellow juice running down my chin - dripping on to my white t- shirt, in my tackies - sticky toes
Buying maputi with my last 5 cents.
Sneaking into my friend Sipho's house - Sun Jam sandwiches and sweet hot tea - made with condensed milk.
Bread so thick - door step sandwiches
Always welcome - always invited
The warm African heart
People who had nothing but shared all they had.
Later sadza, ration meat and green vegetables - chimolia or kale - served from the communal supper dish.
Township jazz on the transistor radio
Catchy, rhythmic - hypnotic.
Sipping opaque beer from a carton with Sipho's husband - tastes like sawdust and smells like Dad's masese he took on fishing trips.
I'm dead for sure if Mom finds me!
Completely content - completely at home
Then going down the garden path
Kicking off my stompie slippers
My pata patas and tackies will be waiting for me tomorrow
Like old friends.
Which one 's will I take on my travels ?
Oh what stories they will tell when we return
But for now I bid them Good Night
Cyndi. Barker Botha

The bar will operate as usual and there will also be a raffle so please come prepared, preferably with small notes! Admission: $3.00 / R20.00

Will be loved, remembered and missed by us all. Rest peacefully. Memorial service to be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, Cecil Ave, 9am, Thursday, 7th October.

May I pass on my belated condolences to the family and many friends of Adrian Lendrum who died recently. He was a good friend to me. I always appreciated his visits to this part of the UK and I know he enjoyed his visits to this neck of the woods - rural north Lancashire.
He loved his visits to Garstang almost as much as he loved the Matopos.
Any friends or relatives of his who are ever in this part of the UK do get in touch....
Bulawayo is my favourite city in the world ... I hope to be visiting again very soon.
All the best to all readers of this Yahoo site and to all Bulawayo folk - you are frequently in my thoughts.

7) Guardian Angels And Donations

Please would you consider publishing a "wish list" on the Morning Mirror. I am sure there are many people like myself who have cupboards bulging with discarded duvets, sheets that are worn in the middle, clothing etc.etc - too good to throw away, and surely some charity out there could make good use of them? I remember the Painted Dog Conservation Trust were asking for haberdashery oddments, and I support the SPCA's wish list, due to their weekly message on The Mirror. A weekly list of charities' needs, giving drop off points if possible would be really appreciated, and who knows it may reduce the volume of refuse in our once- monthly BCC collections??
Many thanks
Chris

NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2010
Hello everyone, it is that time again! Firstly I would like to thank everyone that came to the rescue of SCS when we were in serious trouble with funds, it is only through you, our generous donors, that we can continue this very crucial work! Believe me every cent counts.!
Due to a very unfortunate incident, we had to close our Rhodes Jubilee Clinic for a while. Our staff and the staff of Rhodes Jubilee were verbally attacked and would have been physically if not for the matron of Rhodes Jubilee. This has made us realize that not everyone appreciates the free clinics and medicines that we give! The RJ clinic has now been reopened but for residents of Rhodes Jubilee only, no outsiders - they will have to go to the municipal clinic, although we will still supply medicine to those registered with us.
The Coronation Clinic is still very busy on a Monday afternoon with an average of 25 pensioners being attended to by our Doc's and staff. Garden Park Clinic averages 11 pensioners per week on a Friday and Rhodes Jubilee 18. Total on average of 54 patients a week.
SCS has pulled out of the joint emergency hospital fund with BHN and will now run their own; it is more practical that SCS, who does the medical, runs the complete plan from start to finish. SCS will run fundraisers to ensure we have funds for any emergencies we may have. Any donations would be greatly appreciated.
To this end Dr Condon, Isobel and myself attended a meeting with Mr Msasanure (orthopedic surgeon) who gave us a grand tour of the hospital that he and Mr Magara (general surgeon) have opened in medical center. We were very impressed with the operating theatre, which was spotlessly clean, and the staff were very helpful and professional. This will definitely be our first option for any ops and emergencies! Mr Msasanure was the surgeon who assisted us with Mr Murray the gentleman who broke his clavicle. He is very willing to work with SCS and was very impressed at the work we do. He is also willing to give us a discount, and we will negotiate each patient individually. I have to say we were suitably impressed and SCS would like to thank Mr Msasanure for his understanding, sympathy and assistance. We look forward to working with him and his team.
Isobel has also had a meeting with Dr Saruru of the 24 hr clinic which will be used for lesser emergencies, i.e. dehydration, etc. He was also very accommodating and interested in the work we do.
SCS has had many calls this last quarter for assistance with cancer patients, but unfortunately we cannot afford these drugs, as they are very expensive. We have, however, been able to help one lady, because her medical aid will pay us back. This is a perfect example of a person who is now on medical aid, but does not have the cash to pay up front for medicines. Many of our pensioners have therefore managed to go back on medical aid, but still need help with their medicines, and SCS is assisting with supply of medicines, which are then refunded to us by the pensioners when they receive payment from their medical aid.
EYES: Dr Beatty came to Zimbabwe to run his yearly eye clinic, but unfortunately he did not manage to see all our pensioners who needed cataracts removed or lens replacements. Dr Condon had a meeting with Dr Janna at Richard Morris hospital and he is more than willing to assist us with our pensioners that were not seen too. This will be for free, except for the lenses if they need a lens replacement, as these are his own stock, but he is quite willing to use lenses we can source. He needs +21 dioptres iol lenses. We have 9 pensioners that still need assistance. Any one with any ideas? Our first 9 patients will be seeing him on the 24 Sept for assessment.
AMBULANCE EMRAS: Total calls 25: COST US$750
MEDICINES: SCS is running a programme through the clinics to find out who is back on medical aid. This has reduced our medicine costs by approximately 30%. The availability of medicines has increased which has also contributed to the decrease in cost.
We had a delivery of medicines, vitamins and minerals from Edmund De Beer and his wonderful team from Tzaneen and I believe we have some boxes still on the way as well, so a big thank you to them for the support! We also brought medicines from Castle Ridge in Pretoria for the 3 monthly supply, and thank you to Hannes and his staff for sourcing and packing for us. Most medicines are now available in Zimbabwe and SCS is looking at sourcing locally as this would make it easier than having to bring the medicines from SA due to logistics of transport and border crossings. SCS has contacted wholesale suppliers of medicines and we will see who will be the most reliable and cost efficient. To this end I would like to ask that any donations made be sent to the Zimbabwe account details as follows:
SCS/FHB ZIMBABWE ACCOUNT US$
SENIOR CITIZENS SERVICE
PREMIER BANK
BRADFIELD BRANCH
ACCOUNT NO: 01163433010207
Thank you to all of you that have donated to the Castle Ridge Account, and we hope you will continue to support our cause! Emergency meds will still be sourced through Castle Ridge Pharmacy, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Hannes and his team for his amazing support over the last few years, truly a friend indeed!
TOTAL COST OF MEDICINES FOR THE QUARTER: US$ 13800
EARS: We have had a donation of hearing aids, which have been passed on to Mrs Wolhuter to assess and we will start allocating to pensioners who are already on our list. These hearing aids, when new, cost on average US$500, so we are looking for second hand or a Company willing to donate the new ones. The model we need is Otocon, so that our ear specialist can re programme them.
FOOD FOR HOMES BULAWAYO
FHB is waiting for the next delivery from HIZ. We have changed our deliveries to the homes from weekly to monthly as the need in the homes is not as great as before now that there is product available and the homes are taking responsibility in fund raising as well. Do not be mistaken though they do still need assistance!! We had donations of meat this last quarter from Outspan butchery, thank you Max, as well as venison from Blondie Nathan, thank you! This has been a godsend to the homes! Vegetables, fruit and eggs are still delivered on a weekly basis. The ban on any meat or dairy products has now been lifted so on our next trip south we will bring bacon, viennas, cheese, etc as well as dry product from Trade Center. The homes have definitely missed them! To help us support our pensioners with food and medication, donations may be made in to any of the following accounts. Please remember to email scs.fhb@gmail.com the details of the donation so we can trace it as well as thank you.

Lastly, but not least, I would like to say thank you to the SCS team themselves: Isobel, Arlene, Ursula, Billy, Ranus, Dr Condon and Dr Legg who always manage to make a plan.! To finish, let me quote a phrase I came across the other day, which really made me stop and think: "While there is life, there is always hope."
So, let us continue to hope, be positive and make a change, even if it is only one person at a time!
Angels be with you.

PROPERTY & AUCTIONS
CHARTERED SURVEYORS
1) PROPERTY : Sales Management Valuations
Sales : A brief flurry of excited interest followed CABS announcement that bonds were available. This faded when potential purchasers realised the requirements involved, and Sellers' reluctance to sell on bond. This reluctance hard to understand, as many properties have been with us for sale for ages, awaiting that elusive cash purchaser. A bond is "cash" if all qualifications are met, but a number of sellers decided that the 5 weeks it would take for applications to be processed was just too long. In 5-6 weeks times perhaps their reluctance will be regretted. In any event, we have dozens and dozens of properties to sell from flats, houses to commercial and industrial. And reasonably priced too. Phone Ding Mukono on 0712 397 632 or Beryl Muir on 0912 830 504
Management : Selected properties leased to selected tenants. Each leased property is under the personal management of a nominated experienced member of staff who is, individually, responsible for inspections, collections of rental etc. Valuations: As the only independent Chartered Valuation Surveyor in Bulawayo, we offer a first class professional service, at very reasonable rates. Valuation of all types of real property for:
Market Value,
Insurance,
Mortgage/Finance
Annual rental value,
Deceased estate.
Phone R.E.D. Property on 882944-6, or call at 98a. S. Parirenyatwa St., Between 9th & 10th Ave, Bulawayo. NB: We held our first auction of real estate last week - a valuable and well located 1 acres development stand on Third St. in Suburbs. A reserve was agreed with the Trustee of the owning Trust, and battle commenced at 9.30 sharp following good exposure in the press etc.
A good selection of interested punters attended, not one of whom raised a finger to bid the reserve at auction. "Not sold", whereupon a queue of 5 individuals made offers at above reserve. Why didn't they bid at auction? God alone knows, but we rescheduled the auction for 11:00am, the majority re-attended and the property was eventually sold at auction well above reserve.
Perhaps the concept of selling land at auction was too novel for Bulawayo, but we will all eventually get the hang of it.
R.E.D. AUCTION
We hold weekly auctions of movables at 14 Luton St., Belmont, Corner Hull Road.
Items offered include motorcars, motorcycles, furniture, households and office smalls, tools, building materials etc, etc. If we don't achieve what we think is the right price, then "not sold" and held over until the following week, or sold out of hand Monday to Friday.
Sellers are paid in cash the Monday following the sale. We really do try harder and have a regular following. Phone 886013/4 to arrange collection, or for an idea of value. Deliver to 14 Luton St., 5 days a week.

18) Travel and Tours

HeeHoo and I stayed at the Imba Matombo Private Hotel in Harare for a night en route to Nyanga.
I think they must have given us the honeymoon suite. It was glorious. I had a 180 degree bank of floor to ceiling windows with a wooden deck overlooking a canopy of glorious Msasa trees overlooking the Geln Lorne Valley and a beautiful lake .
There were a number of most interesting birds in the trees to entertain me including paradise fly catchers just sporting their new summer plumage.
A small troop of monkeys passed by curiously in the late afternoon. It was quite the most glorious place to spend a quiet afternoon while poor HeeHoo slaved away at his Harare office.

To make life a lot simpler you can now put all your slides onto your computer and have them all saved onto disk or your computer instead of lugging out those boxes of slides to see photo's of the "old days". 33) TIDBITS

or you non news folk:
I copied this from my Church magazine I changed it in my head to the 80s cos that's where I am. still fits and is very apt - for me !!
From Muckraker:
Finally, here's a Confucian thought: A Lion will not betray his wife but a Tiger Wood.
Getting on with it
Today dear Lord I'm 90 and so much I haven't done
I hope dear Lord you'll let me live until I'm 91
But if I haven't finished all that I want to do
Would you let me stay a while until I'm 92 ?
So many spots to visit and so much more to see
Do you think that you could manage Lord to make it 93
The world is changing very fast there is so much in store
So that I might just see it all can you make that 94?
And if by then I'm still alive
I'd like to stay till 95
There are many books I've yet to read and much that you can fix
Perhaps you could extend it Lord until I'm 96
I now dear Lord it's much to ask and it must be nice in heaven
But I'm sure I'd find enough to do until I'm 97
I know by then I wont move fast and sometimes would be late
But I think that I could dally until I'm 98
