AFRICAN RAIN

If you have never lived in Africa you will never understand. Its the smell, most of all, that one notes first. The smell is tantalizing, almost enticing. Can a smell almost be electrifying?

Then its the atmosphere - dense, compact, stifling but enticingly aware. One tends not to notice the heat, the dust, the haze. Because when one has lived in Africa, all of these components mean the most wonderful of all things that is nature. An African thunderstorm.

Thrilling, exhilarating, terrifying, we cower at nature's might, we scurry frantically to safety away from the lightening bolts that are hurled indiscriminately around the firmament. But when the noise and angst subsides and that rain starts to fall, we all rush outside and do the crazy Zimbabwe rain dance !!

The jacarandas are now past their best, but there are still a few creating that famous purple haze. The flamboyant trees are sprouting brilliant promiscuous scarlet tips, a promise of glory soon to come. The unsung heros the Tipu trees, cast their eerie yellow glow across the horizon. The air is laden with the scent of jasmine and frangipani and when the wind drives from the north, one holds one's breath and waits expectantly.

During the mean years a wicked south westerly will come up spitefully and drive away the rain, but when Mother Nature favors us, we know we are in for something special !! We have been in storms in Texas, now that was something else.. they have storms like no others, we have seen storms in South Africa, theirs are noisy and exciting too. But when its your own storm, on your own patch, when every blade of grass is gasping, and every speck of liquid is precious, it makes it all the more special.

How many times have we forgiven Mother Nature ?

For sending 600 ml in half and hour and flooding the house so badly the fire brigade was called to pump the water out ? How many times have we lost our fitted carpets. How many times have giant trees been tossed around like match sticks but its OK, no problem, bring on the rain !! One awful year we counted over a hundred dead doves at the base of our giant fig tree, victims of an African storm.

The rain gauge is dusted off and installed in the garden, ready for the morning boasting session when we all ardently compare rainfall figures.

We scan the skies, we consult google and the El Nino sites frantically. An above average rainfall this year ? Praise be to God.

TALES OF BEATRIX POTTER & WINTER DREAMS
Friday 26 November in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m.- with a supper interval. Five of Beatrix Potter's most famous and delightful tales come to life in this colourful and imaginative interpretation with "guest appearances" of characters from other tales. John Lanchbery used Victorian themes to form the basis of a wonderfully tuneful score and the brilliant choreography was created by Sir Frederick Ashton (who appears as Mrs.Tiggywinkle!) and danced by members of the Royal Ballet. In strong contrast, "Winter Dreams" is an undisputed masterpiece by Kenneth Macmillan to piano music by Tchaikovsky and Russian folk music for guitar ensemble. Based on Chekhov's "Three Sisters", it reveals the intricate relationship of the characters trapped in the stultifying atmosphere of a Russian provincial town at the turn of the 20th century. Darcey Bussell dances Masha, the sister married to a boring, worthy schoolmaster (Anthony Dowell), and drawn into an affair with the dashing Colonel Vershinin, danced with passionate intensity and thrilling virtuosity by Irek Mukhamedov. Admission: $3.00 / R20.00 [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers]

PROPOSED QUIZ QUESTIONS SESSIONS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS AND ANYBODY ELSE INTERESTED.
In March this year a quiz questions session took place in the beautiful surroundings of the Hillside Dams Conservancy.
Following this I got the idea to try and organise some more of these events and I put a write-up in the Morning Mirror calling for contact persons at the various senior citizens' complexes. Unfortunately nothing much transpired and being a senior citizen myself I lack the means and the energy to call on these places myself.
I therefore now appeal to JUNIOR residents living close to any complexes to act as go-between to keep contact with me (e-mail) and the old folk. Please let me have your particulars !!! (Don't worry about ID number or your tax reference.......) I have discovered a very attractive and suitable place in Pembroke Place in Hillside not far off the Matopos Road.
Entry will be free and the restaurant there will provide tea/coffee to pensioners (only) at subsidised prices.
The provisional date for the proposed session is Tuesday 16th November.
(It will have to be a week-day away from the busy week-end).
Time 10 - 12 am.
Directions to Pembroke Place are as follows:
From town proceed on the Matopos Road towards Cresta Churchil, turn left into either Pembroke Road of Napier Avenue and follow to the end of the road.
Anybody is welcome to attend. The more the merrier, whatever age. It would be appreciated if younger people with vacant seats in their cars would give lifts to seniors without transport. Now I am signing off and am going to wait and see what happens. Yours,
Dick Wisselo (a.k.a. Wiseowls) e-mail : wiseowls@gatorzw.com

WARM HEART UGLY FACE
Do you remember queuing in the bank every day to draw your allowance that would buy half a loaf of bread ?
Do you remember when our husbands would go off and "play golf" on Friday lunchtime just in case the police came to throw them into the cells for the weekend ?
Do you remember staring at rows and rows of empty shelves and wondering what you were going to feed the family ?

Julie Anne Edwards takes us on a fearless journey of passion, madness and love. 9) Gossip Column

After reading your 409 article and responding to the ever increasing costs of goods, the members of the public need to see for themselves who at the end of the day are ripping them off...we as farmers are tired of seeing what we get paid for vegetables, and what the shop keeper sells the items for, sometimes a 1000% profit. Cabbages go for at least 50 rand cents a Cabbage, Onions 1.50 rand per kg, what do the consumers pay, certainly not that, maybe would be a good idea for someone to do a survey and stop the middle man from ripping people off, I myself am sick and tired of seeing this daily, and we as the public need to make a stand against this blatant day light robbery. U. M.

EXCERPT FROM THE MATOBO CONSERVATION SOCIETY NEWSLETTER
This October has certainly seemed hotter than usual, so let's hope it's a precursor to good rains. And whilst we bake and wilt in the heat (with October 12th recorded as the hottest day ever in Bulawayo at 38.2c), the trees have burst out into thick fresh green foliage, some in full bloom. It's always incredible to see spring emerge with such vigour when the ground and air is still so dry. Along the granite ridges, the Elephantorrhiza is waving brilliant fresh green fronds; whist t the rest of the kopje is still dry and hard.

1. YOUR EDITORIAL ABOUT BECOMING LITIGIOUS WAS EXCELLENT AND DOES SAY ALL THE RIGHT THINGS, BUT MY COMMENT IF YOU WISH TO PRINT IT IS "WHAT A WONDERFUL CONCEPT IF WE COULD TAKE LITIGATION AGAINST THE AUTHORITIES FOR ALL THE POOR SERVICES AND REASONS GIVEN IN YOUR ARTICLE, PLUS A HUNDRED AND ONE OTHER THINGS WHERE WE LIVE WITH SUCH FRUSTRATIONS IN OUR LIVES IN ZIMBABWE TODAY - BUT HOW WOULD WE TAKE LITIGATION AGAINST THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM WHICH IS TOTALLY INCAPABLE OF HANDLING AND ENFORCING ANY LITIGATION TO A SATISFACTORY CONCLUSION. UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE BECOME A SOCIETY WHICH ACCEPTS THE CONTINUING DETERIORATION OF STANDARDS, AND THE JUDICIARY IS CORRUPT AND AS MUCH TO BLAME FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF OUR LIVES - THIS EMANATES FROM THE EXAMPLE SET BY ALL OUR LEADERS WHO ARE TOTALLY ABOVE THE LAW.

"An interesting fact about October 2010:
This OCT. has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays, all in 1 month. It happens once in 823 years. These are considered money bags months Based on Chinese fengshui."
BUT -
July 2011 will have 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays, all in 1 month??? :o)
The next time October has 5 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays is in 2021.
In the next 1000 years there will be 1000 months that have 5 x Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the next 1000 years. 2016 has two months - January and July with 5 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, but 2018 has no months with 5 of each. October 2004 was the last time October had 5 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The email is factually incorrect, 823 years from 2010 would take us to the year 2833 and the only month that has 5 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in that year is July. Going 822 years into the future is when October has 5 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. That year would be 2832. From now until year 2832 including this year, there will be 116 Octobers that have 5 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays: 2010, 2021, 2027, 2032, 2038, 2049.... (in the next 1000 years 146 July's have 5 Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays - 2011, 2016, 2022, 2033, 2039, 2044, 2050, 2061...)

10) Personal Column

Hi Everyone,
Please help us to make this Christmas an extra special one!!!
You all know what we do, but here is a reminder.
We supply food parcels to Old Age homes all over Zimbabwe. There are also numerous articles on the Web about our organization. We are an officially registered Non Profit Organization (Section 21) in South Africa and are registered with SARS as a Public Benefit Organization in terms of section 18A the Income Tax Act in others words all donations receive a tax deductible certificate. I have attached a short list of homes that we currently support in Zimbabwe. We also support SOAP in Bulawayo and have helped to set up a system similar to SOAP in Gweru, Zvishavane, Masvingo, Red Cliff, Kwe Kwe and Kadoma to cater for pensioners that are not in old age homes as well. By all means contact us, ask for more information, which we will gladly supply you with. And then please support our old Rhodesian pensioners who have nowhere to go. Our web page is www.zimpen.co.za, all updates regarding what we do and how it is achieved are also loaded directly onto our site. We are situated in Malelane in Mpumalanga (Near the Kruger National Park) and welcome everyone to come and see our warehouse facilities.
This is a list of homes we support with just over 1600 people being supplied with food:

Esigodini Kinghaven Moth Cottages Bulawayo Edith Duly Nursing Home , Queen Mary House , Barbra Burrel Home , Ralsteen House Masonic Cottages Trust , S.O.A.P Bulawayo , Verity Amm , Pensioners in their own homes Gweru Huisvergesig Old Age Home , Bogies Trust , Pensioners in their own homes . Jacaranda House Shurugwe Muus Lodge , Pensioners in their own homes. Zvishavane Mimosa Cottages , Pensioners in their own homes. Masvingo Pioneer Trust , Mucheke Old Peoples Home , Pensioners in their own homes. Chivhu Pensioners in their own homes Mutare Eastern Highlands Trust , Murambi Cottages , Park Cottages , S.O.A.P Mutare. Chipinge Pensioners in their own homes. Rusape Rest Haven Cottages. Bindura Mazowe Valley Trust. Muvwri Malvern Trust. Chinoyi Sunningdale Trust Karoi Pensioners in their own homes. Kariba Pensioners in their own homes. Harare Water Falls Trust Kadoma West View Trust , Pensioners in their own homes Kwe Kwe Lyn Brook Old Age Home , Pensioners in their own homes. Red Cliff Hubert Lee Cottages , Pensioners in their own homes Food is at times supplied to Barkley Block in Bulawayo, Borrowdale Trust in Marondera and Greenways Trust in Chegutu
We appreciate any and all support received as every little bit helps us to assist the Aged Angles of Zimbabwe.
The 2 trucks left Malelane on the 14th of October for the current trip and are delivering approximately 20 tons of food. We are now in the process of getting ready for the Christmas trip, which we always try to make a special one. I would also appreciate it if you could forward this email around as any and all support is welcome
Kind Regards
