The Green Thing

In the line at the supermarket, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren't good for theenvironment. The woman apologized to her and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment."

She was right, that generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soft drink bottles and beer bottles to the shop. The shop sent them back to the factory to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. They were recycled.

But they didn't have the green thing back in that customer's day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.

But she was right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby's nappies because they didn't have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in a 220 volt energy gobbling machine - wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right; they didn't have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house - not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of a cricket pitch. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. They didn't have air conditioning or electric stoves with self cleaning ovens. They didn't have battery operated toys, computers, or telephones.

Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn fuel just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They used hand operated clippers to trim the shrubs. They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right; they didn't have the green thing back then.

They drank from a glass filled from the tap when they were thirsty instead of using a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and theyreplaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But they didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people walked or took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn't have the green thing back then?

With thanks to June Hithersay

3) Roses And Raspberries
Please could you let me know how to place an advert in Morning Mirror regarding a theft at Maleme Dam on the afternoon of the 2nd May. It happened to South African tourists who had gone for a walk leaving their campsite for under an hour and to come back to their vehicle being broken into and being properly cleaned out. The police and National Parks taking it all in their stride holding out little hope of getting anything back. I guess this could go into the raspberry column.

Regards Cathy Jarman

All donations in lieu of flowers will be given to Sean Labuschagne. Our thanks to everyone for their kindness, thoughts and wishes to support us all at this difficult time.
Best wishes
The Langley Family.

WENDY MACKAY

Wendy sadly passed away on Monday 3 May at 03h30 from a massive stroke and died without pain or suffering, for which I am truly grateful. I know this is a great shock to you all as indeed it was to us, but Wendy would not approve of our mourning for too long. She will be laughing and dancing without pain in Glory!

There will be a private cremation on Friday, and we invite you to join us in celebratory service of her life on Saturday 7 May at 10h00 at the Hillside Church of Ascension (Bulawayo). She will undoubtedly be singing in heaven as we join together in song. We request that there be no flowers but should you wish to make a donation, please make it to The Way Clinic (at the Church of Ascension). Wendy's work there was a huge part of her selfless giving and to honour her this way would keep her memory alive for a long time to come. An alternative we be a donation to an Old Age Home of your choice as she had such an affinity for the Aged.

I would like to thank you all for the enormous outpouring of love and care, kindness and prayers - it has deeply strengthened us as a family.
All love and thanks
Hal, Anwen, Ged, Marc and family

Well done to Sarah and Henri (Morning Mirror 436) and their proposed Hillside Residents Association!

This is an initiative that really needs every Hillside resident's support!

In fact this is an initiative that needs action within all suburbs of Bulawayo - Low and high density and all!

I am sure that I am a pretty typical Bulawayo resident and I am tired of: Municipal services and infrastructure that don't work
Party political Counsellors who are not seen between elections
The appalling litter throughout the city and suburbs
Waiting for things to improve
The cost of living exceeding disposable income
Paying bribes to get things done
Live in fear of armed robbery
Most of all I am tired of not doing anything more active than whingeing!
I don't want to: Resort to violence and civil disobedience Go toy toying down Leopold Takawira Blame the Government or the Municipality when I am equally accountable Continue to live in a wholly negative atmosphere Most of all I don't want to spend the rest of my life waiting for miraculous change to happen!

I do want to: Be a part of the recovery of my city
Feel proud of my city once more
Feel a part of a Bulawayo community that is entirely united in a common goal of prosperity
Be a part of a success story and feeling that there still is something worth working towards
Live in a city that anyone in the world would be keen to visit
I am sure that many Bulawayo people, like me, have wasted a lot of time thinking that there is simply nothing they can do about our miserable situation.

Stephen Covey, the author of 'Seven Habits of Highly Successful People', says we are all 'responsible', that is, we are accountable. We are 'response-able' , that is we are capable of taking action about our situation. Stephen also talks about 'think Win/Win'. This is a concept that no one in this country has ever seriously attempted and I would really like us to experiment with the idea. Just think - if all the diverse associations, officials, cultures, races and classes that make up the Bulawayo community were to combine their energies with the objective of improving our situation, we would surely be able to achieve a significant result.
If we had achieved tangible improvements for Bulawayo could we reasonably conclude that we had all won? I think that if I was participating in a united, community effort to bring about improvements I would definitely feel I was onto a winning streak. Just achieving united action without yet having got results would be a win/win situation. Stephen says 'Begin with the end in mind'. How does that equate to our Bulawayo situation? Every city needs a reason to exist. Bulawayo has long since ceased to be the industrial centre of the country. We are no longer the transport hub of Southern Africa. We are no longer a service centre for provincial commercial agriculture. Perhaps we need to take the initiative and actually decide on a reason and then create the need. I personally think we should decide to be the Tourist Hub of Southern Africa and then to start to put into place the facilities that will justify such a title. Like any end goal it is a long term concept but, marketed properly, it would have the effect of uniting the community and instilling enthusiasm.
The next 'Successful Habit' is 'Take one step at a time'. Here we would need to employ something of the royal wedding meticulous planning and clockwork execution. In Bulawayo terms that means we need to repair and restore the city before we consider expansion and growth. To achieve this as a community wide project we must get the Residents Associations established and representative so that they can accurately pass and disseminate information between the Municipality and the residents. Then lay out terms of reference, limits of authority and lines of communication. This may seem to be stating the obvious but maybe we all need to jog our memories since many an organisation has failed recently not least because protocol was circumvented. Many a good idea has foundered due to inadequate planning and procedure.

I don't know about you all, but I think life could very quickly become more tolerable, dare I say even exciting, if I felt that I was contributing to a cause that was productive, positive and pursuing a universally popular objective. I think that the way to succeed with the win/win experiment we should not be waiting for a Messiah to appear on a stallion, swinging a sword. By definition beginning at the grass roots level and working upwards will better serve the real needs of the grass roots. Without a doubt the city's leaders need to be made accountable to the residents, but it should be obvious by now that finger pointing and recrimination have little effect. Engaging the leaders in a project that will ultimately make them a part of the solution and afford them the accolade's they feel is their right of office. That is still win/win since it would also naturally gradually pass real accountability to their offices.

MOTORISTS caught using cellular phones while driving now face stiff penalties following the launch of an aggressive police exercise to reduce road accidents.
New regulations also empower officers to check the cellular phone of a driver involved in an accident to determine whether or not the mishap was not a result of operating the communication device.
National police spokesperson Inspector Tinaye Chigome last week said officers have been deployed countrywide to arrest errant drivers.

He said his department was taking serious steps to curtail the practice, which is among the major causes of road traffic accidents. +We have to implement the law, as the police force's traffic monitoring department,- he said.

+Those arrested will be fined. They will be taken to court, as stipulated by the country's laws, if they fail to pay the fine.
+The use of mobile phones by motorists while on the wheel is common in urban areas. Therefore, our officers will man designated points to arrest individuals caught breaking the law.-
Insp Chigome said an increasing number of accidents were linked to cellular phone use, which often distracts the driver.
+When an accident occurs, units attending the scene will look at the concerned persons' call records to determine if they were using cellular phones (at the time of the accident),- he said.
+It is now a trend that both minor and serious accidents are a result of individuals using cellular phones.-
National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena warned motorists against committing the offence. +It has always been an offence, if you are found on the wrong side of the law you will be arrested on the spot. This is an offence all over the world,- he said.
The Government introduced regulations criminalising the use of cellular phones by motorists following an upsurge in road traffic accidents.
Although the measures have been in place for years, police cited manpower shortage as an impediment to implementing them. Similar legislation is also in place in other parts of the world such as America and Europe where law enforcement agents use street cameras to detect offenders.

BE WARNED..

Just read your amusing wedding piece. Two things you may have missed - the cart-wheeling verger (Sky news) and the commentator (forget which station) who described the two Treacy be-hatted princesses as looking "like a stag at bay and a boiled sweet" followed by the comment "they need help!"

The Bulawayo princesses were of course very elegant.

33) TIDBITS

WRIGHTS NURSERY NEWS LETTER: MAY 2011

Our weather is really going haywire with many of us getting some very heavy rain in April. We have had just over 150 mm for the month and this has really soaked the garden. Moist soils retain heat for much longer then dry soils so we may find winter does not encroach as fast this year. The weather has been warm to date and all the garden plants will keep growing until the soil temperatures start to drop below 10oC. (They are currently 15oC)

MOTHERS DAY this year is on Sunday 8 May and there will be various hand sprays and posy baskets for sale at both Hillside and Pembroke. To guarantee your flowers you can go and pre-pay for your order at either site. Last year we had many, many disappointed customers come late on Saturday hoping to find some flowers for their Mum!

WHAT TO DO IN MAY
Whilst the weather is still good get into the garden and start to do your end of season clean up and get your compost heaps going for the spring. Things to do: -
In frost susceptible areas start frost proofing your garden and young trees with thatching grass. Cut back your Cannas. Remove all the side shoots and tendrils from your sweet peas to improve flowering. Lily bulbs should be planted to a depth equivalent to twice the width of the bulb. Look out for aphids which start to come in from the drying off veld to feed on your green winter veggies and flowers. Deep soak all your fruit trees once a month from now on to ensure you get a good crop next season. Start to reduce the amount of water you put on your lawns to about twice a month. Keep deadheading and cleaning up your plants. Mulch your acid loving plants like your Azaleas and Camellias as they will be flowering in late winter. Make compost with all the garden trimmings and falling leaves. DO NOT BURN YOUR GARDEN WASTE. It is actually against the Municipal By- Laws and if left to smolder at night causes great discomfort to ones neighbors.

ECO AND ENVIRONMENTAL NOTES
South Africa has been very hard on many of our old favorite exotic garden trees like the Jacaranda and the Syringa. The South African climate is not as harsh as ours here in Matabeleland so we do not face the same scale of problem that they do. (In Mashonaland how ever I have seen a lot of wild growing Jacaranda, Syringa and Cedrella toona). I would not plant any of the exotic invader species again and would just enjoy the life of the ones still standing. I would start to under plant a new tree (Indigenous?) wherever I had an old exotic invader and then remove the invader sooner rather then later.

PETUNIAS
The petunia season is now in full swing so I wanted to give you some tips on getting the most out of these winter garden jewels. Plant into a well-drained soil that has had Single super phosphate and Comp D added to it. If you have compost or manure add this as well. Plant 12 - 18 ' apart (200 - 400 mm). They will fill the space! Petunias have an extensive and very hungry root system that, for best results, needs to be fed with a compound fertilizer
ONCE A MONTH..
Liquid and foliar feeding is also highly recommended. Dead head old blooms daily. Once the petunia starts to set its seed it believes it has done its duty and will then stop blooming.
Cut back leggy growth and feed heavily to see a renewed shooting of new flowers later in the season. Do not over water Petunias - they hate wet feet, especially in winter. Make sure they get 6-10 hours of sunlight a day.

FAQ'S
Winter Bulbs. Why do we not see them at the nurseries these days? In days gone by the seed houses imported all our favorites, but today they no longer do so because of other priorities. We do how ever see a number of vendors who buy bulbs from the shops in RSA and then come and offer them to us for re-sale. The problem is they have been purchased at a retail price of say R30 and we are being offered them at R60. We then have to add on a mark up and VAT which just makes the price too high.
Questions. If you have any queries please feel free to email me.
WHAT TO PLANT THIS MONTH
IN YOUR FLOWER GARDEN. Calendulas, campanulas, Corn flowers, Foxgloves, Iceland poppies, Sweet peas, Stocks.
IN YOU VEGGIE GARDEN. Broad beans, Lettuce, Radish, Spinach, peas
That's it for this month. Enjoy your gardening.

Thought is an amazing thing: it can be a mirror, a lens, a bridge, a wall, a window, a ladder or a house. There is nothing in the world that has the cutting edge of a new thought.
