Charlene was born in Bulawayo at the Mater Dei hospital in fact - how dare SA claim OUR princess.?? Charlene, Princess of Monaco born 25 January 1978) is the wife of Albert II, Prince of Monaco, and is a former South African competitive swimmer. Charlene is the daughter of Michael and Lynette Wittstock. She was born in Rhodesia (present-day Zimbabwe) to a family of German and English descent, but her family relocated to Gauteng, South Africa, in 1989. She represented South Africa at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, with her team finishing fifth in the women's 4 100 m medley. She retired from competitive swimming in 2007. She met Prince Albert in 2000 at a swimming event in Monaco. They were first seen together in 2006, and she has accompanied Albert on many of his official duties since then. They announced their engagement in June 2010 and were married on 1 July 2011. The controversy surrounding the wedding of Prince Albert of Monaco to Charlene Wittstock has not stopped Bulawayo claiming the princess as one of their own. The wedding of Prince Albert of Monaco to Charlene Wittstock has been all over the news since the 1st July 2011 ceremony. The bride is generally described as South African but she was actually born in the city of Bulawayo in the southern part of Zimbabwe, in the Mater Dei hospital. The hospital was one of the main maternity units at the time and is run by Catholic nuns. Charlene has two younger brothers. Her mother Lynette Wittstock was a former competitive diver and swimming coach which is from where Charlene got her love of swimming. The family moved to Benoni, near Johannesburg, South Africa in 1989 when Charlene was 12. +++++++ TAKE NOTE !!!! 9 Things That Might Disappear In Our Lifetime. Whether these changes are good or bad, depends in part, on how we adapt to them. But, ready or not, here they come. 1. The Post Office Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. Email, Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills. 2. The Cheque Britain is already laying the groundwork to do away with cheques by 2018. It costs the financial system billions of dollars a year to process cheques. Plastic cards and online transactions will lead to the eventual demise of the cheque. This plays right into the death of the post office. If you never paid your bills by mail and never received them by mail, the post office would absolutely go out of business. 3. The Newspaper The younger generation simply doesn't read the newspaper. They certainly don't subscribe to a daily delivered print edition. That may go the way of the milkman and the laundry man. As for reading the paper online, get ready to pay for it. The rise in mobile Internet devices and e-readers has caused all the newspaper and magazine publishers to form an alliance. They have met with Apple, Amazon, and the major cell phone companies to develop a model for paid subscription services. 4. The Book You say you will never give up the physical book that you hold in your hand and turn the literal pages. I said the same thing about downloading music from iTunes. I wanted my hard copy CD. But I quickly changed my mind when I discovered that I could get albums for half the price without ever leaving home to get the latest music. The same thing will happen with books. You can browse a bookstore online and even read a preview chapter before you buy. And the price is less than half that of a real book. And think of the convenience! Once you start flicking your fingers on the screen instead of the book, you find that you are lost in the story, can't wait to see what happens next, and you forget that you're holding a gadget instead of a book. 5. The Land Line Telephone Unless you have a large family and make a lot of local calls, you don't need it anymore. Most people keep it simply because they've always had it. But you are paying double charges for that extra service. All the cell phone companies will let you call customers using the same cell provider for no charge against your minutes 6. Music This is one of the saddest parts of the change story. The music industry is dying a slow death. Not just because of illegal downloading. It's the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the people who would like to hear it. Greed and corruption is the problem. The record labels and the radio conglomerates are simply self-destructing. Over 40% of the music purchased today is "catalogue items," meaning traditional music that the public is familiar with. Older established artists. This is also true on the live concert circuit. To explore this fascinating and disturbing topic further, check out the book, "Appetite for Self-Destruction" by Steve Knopper, and the video documentary, "Before the Music Dies." 7. Television Revenues to the networks are down dramatically. Not just because of the economy. People are watching TV and movies streamed from their computers. And they're playing games and doing lots of other things that take up the time that used to be spent watching TV. Prime time shows have degenerated down to lower than the lowest common denominator. Cable rates are skyrocketing and commercials run about every 4 minutes and 30 seconds. I say good riddance to most of it. It's time for the cable companies to be put out of our misery. Let the people choose what they want to watch online and through Netflix. 8. The "Things" That You Own Many of the very possessions that we used to own are still in our lives, but we may not actually own them in the future. They may simply reside in "the cloud." Today your computer has a hard drive and you store your pictures, music, movies, and documents. Your software is on a CD or DVD, and you can always re-install it if need be. But all of that is changing. Apple, Microsoft, and Google are all finishing up their latest "cloud services." That means that when you turn on a computer, the Internet will be built into the operating system. So, Windows, Google, and the Mac OS will be tied straight into the Internet. If you click an icon, it will open something in the Internet cloud. If you save something, it will be saved to the cloud. And you may pay a monthly subscription fee to the cloud provider. In this virtual world, you can access your music or your books, or your whatever from any laptop or handheld device. That's the good news. But, will you actually own any of this "stuff" or will it all be able to disappear at any moment in a big "Poof?" Will most of the things in our lives be disposable and whimsical? It makes you want to run to the closet and pull out that photo album, grab a book from the shelf, or open up a CD case and pull out the insert. 9. Privacy If there ever was a concept that we can look back on nostalgically, it would be privacy. That's gone. It's been gone for a long time anyway. There are cameras on the street, in most of the buildings, and even built into your computer and cell phone. But you can be sure that 24/7, "They" know who you are and where you are, right down to the GPS coordinates, and the Google Street View. If you buy something, your habit is put into a zillion profiles, and your ads will change to reflect those habits. "They" will try to get you to buy something else. Again and again. All we will have left that can't be changed are "Memories". And then probably Alzheimers will take that away too ! ANON ++++++++ 2) NOTICES AND EVENTS THE EMBASSY OF SPAIN has the pleasure of delighting the audience with a concert by the classic duo, violinist Oleguer Beltr n Pallar s and violist Behrang Rassekhi. Both were members of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and it was the framework within which Behrang Rassekhi and Oleguer Beltr n Pallar s first performed together on stage. They formed a close friendship and from that moment on they were artistically involved in parallel professional directions, exploring chamber music with an intensity and commitment that they were privileged to learn with the GM Youth Orchestra. They will play music by Martinu, Mozart, Michael Haydn and Handel-Halvorsen. FRIDAY 8 JULY IN THE ROBERT SIBSON HALL AT 7.30 P.M. ADMISSION FREE! ++++ CHRISTIAN MEN'S BREAKFAST GENTLEMEN! The event, the second since the track was completely re-laid last year, will start at 2pm with drivers from Harare and Bulawayo competing in a far ranging class of cars, from the modest 0-1600cc class to the mighty twin turbo charged classes. "The great thing about Drag Racing is that you don't need to have a racing car to take part, any car will do," said vice chairman, Leonora Young. "And with seven different classes of car that you can register under, everyone stands a chance to win." Events like the Drags and last weekend's inaugural Clubman Class racing, where drivers can get lessons from seasoned racers, are all building up to the BMC's premier race event, the adrenalin-charged Three Hour Endurance Race, to be held on December 3. A tradition which started way back in 1969, the first of which was won by local driver, John Love, at the wheel of a Chevy Lola MK3B, the Three Hour Endurance is one of the best-known racing events, not only in the country, but the region as a whole. Interest in this year's event has already been ignited through various marketing projects, including an active Face Book site, and drivers from throughout the region are preparing their cars to compete. "It's one of the most popular motoring events in the region and people actually build cars especially for the race," said Leonora. "This year's event, on the new track, promises to be one of the biggest yet." Proceeds from all the events held at the track will go towards the track's continued renovation programme which will include maintenance, improving entrances and signage and keeping the track in optimum condition. "The track was closed for almost two years due to the condition of the track and a great deal of time and money has gone into re-laying it," said Leonora. "The result is an ideal racing environment which enthusiasts and drivers can witness for themselves this weekend." +++++++ VALENCIA ART - BEITBRIDGE ZIMBABWE Join host, Patty Bristow and Art Teacher, Jacqui Stewart, for an Art Safari to be held at Valencia Guest House, Beitbridge Zimbabwe. Past experience though made us aware of the expensive beverages and not quite up to standard food. Instead we decided to give the re-opened 'Water Bucks Head' a try. Friday evening sundowners served by friendly staff whilst we browsed the three separate menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner (served till 9pm). On Saturday evening we again arrived for sundowners and ordered dinner. Starters around $3, mains $3.50 to $12. We ordered our food and 15 minutes later we were shown to a deserted dining room. All the tables were laid out on impressively clean white table cloths with flowers and, (note H.S.L) cotton napkins. The well dressed waiter brought a jug of warm water and a bowl to the table so we could rinse our hands in the traditional manner. Hot rolls were brought. The main courses arrived, very impressively decorated, hot and well cooked. Service was brilliant and friendly. I once read in a travel magazine that 'Zimbabweans have the biggest smile' no more so than at the Water Bucks Head. Give them a try you won't be disappointed! Dave. +++++++ The Farm House - Matopos My husband, John Peacock, our grandsons Liam and Jordan Peacock and I had the good fortune to 'discover' The Farmhouse in Matopos. I asked Pam Fenn to find accommodation for the June Exeat weekend. She sent me a list from Co Coordinating Zimbabwe. Well done Bulawayo for such an array of wonderful venues close to Bulawayo. The Farmhouse was by far the most attractive price wise and 'young boy' entertainment wise. We stayed 4 days and 4 nights dinner, bed and breakfast. The staff are wonderful, friendly, efficient, accommodating. The owners/managers John, Alison and Alistair Burton could not do enough for us. Our boys aged 10 and 11 were able to ride horses, closely herded by very competent and patient grooms. They were encouraged to become involved in the day to day running of the ranch, going for quad bike rides and walks with Alistair and generally explored the surroundings of the lodge, becoming good and dirty. There was a family mountain biking, another having family Sunday lunch around the swimming pool, young folk on a horse riding expedition and yet another family sharing an abseiling adventure. The food was overwhelming. Huge portions and varied with every meal. Good old fashioned Zim hospitality at its best. We had the freedom to wander the ranch, play at the dam, wonder at the spectacular views over the Matopos Hills and RELAX!!! Regards to all Jean Clarke +++++++ I have not lived in Bulawayo since 1968, but have had many wonderful holidays there, the last (sadly) being in 2000. I was distressed to read your description of the deterioration of Leopold Takawira Avenue. As a scholar at St Peters in the 1950's I used to cycle daily from the centre of town along Selborne Avenue. I have vivid memories of the glorious parks on both sides, and the splendour of the jacarandas in flower, as well as the silver oaks along the cycle path. I too hope that this once beautiful boulevard may one day return to its former glory.
