1950s version of an E-Mail

I have no idea who put this together, but it is great !

Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot,
Before the days of Dylan , or the dawn of Camelot.
There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me,

For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born,
Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was porn.

We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince,
Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since.

We danced to 'Little Darlin,' and sang to 'Stagger Lee'
And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me, Me.

Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was one too many,
And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney.

And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see
A boy named George with lipstick, in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice,
And when they made a movie, they never made it twice..

We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three,
Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me, Me.

Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp,
And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp.

We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T,
And Oprah couldn't talk yet, in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We had our share of her s, we never thought they'd go,
At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monr .

For youth was still eternal, and life was yet to be,
And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead,
And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson , and Zeppelins were not Led.

And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkees lived in trees,
Madonna was Mary in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We'd never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars,
And babies might be bottle-fed, but they were not grown in jars.

And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free,
And dorms were never co-Ed in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag,
And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag.

And hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea,
And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me, Me.

Buicks came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks,
And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks.

And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee,
And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me, Me.

We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues,
We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea
Or prime-time ads for those dysfunctions in the Land That Made Me, Me.

There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill,
And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill

And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three,
And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me, Me.

But all things have a season, or so we've heard them say,
And now instead of Maybelline we swear by Retin-A.
They send us invitations to join AARP,
We've come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me, Me.

So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans,
And wonder why they're using smaller print in magazines.
And we tell our children's children of the way it used to be,
Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me, Me.

The Dance Academy
Proudly Presents FantaSea
From the depths of Neptune's ocean lair,
Fantasy is born, as a shimmering pair
Of delicate bubbles begin to rise
From this murky world to the azure skies.

Up past jelly fish, all aglow.
Friendly nemos in a coulourful show.
With ocean spirits to guide them through,
A maze of coral, and seaweed too.

As fearsome sharks steal silently by,
Oyster shells close, with a whispered sigh.
The haunting song of the Orca whale
Calls them upward, to continue their tale.

On the crests of waves our bubbles glimpse
Mermaids, pirates and sailors' ships.
The lighthouse shines its comforting beam
And now we begin this ocean dream ...

So dive on down, seaward bound,
Motion in the ocean is all around!

A show not to be missed.
Tickets now on sale at the Bulawayo Theatre

PAB AND THE ACADEMY

I CLAUDIUS
13 & 20 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
"The Roman Coronation Street" continues its fascinating progress with additional features on two evenings. 6 October: "The Epic That Never Was", narrated by Dirk Bogarde, tells the story of an earlier, unsuccessful attempt to film the novels with Charles Laughton, Emlyn Williams, Merle Oberon and Flora Robson among the cast, an early victim of the "Claudius Curse"! 13 October: "Claudius - A Television Epic" includes reminiscences from the director and cast and much fascinating background on how the series was made. Admission: $3.00 per week [free to film members]

BERLIOZ: SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE / LISZT: A FAUST SYMPHONY
Friday 14 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. - with supper interval Franz Liszt was born on 22 October 1811 and this is the first of two DVD evenings to celebrate that event. Leonard Bernstein conducts the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Liszt's orchestral masterpiece, "A Faust Symphony" that, according to one critic, found him 'at the absolute peak of his conducting powers... ' Berlioz's Fantastic Symphony is an appropriate companion for the Liszt, not least because the latter's Faust Symphony is dedicated to Berlioz. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

SHADES OF LOVE
Saturday 15 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. N.B. TIME! Dorothy Sikwela, Jessie Ndlovu, Lacrima Chulu, Pieter Cl te and Graham Bishop with Deon Marcus (piano) present an evening of Love Songs including All I Ask of You, A Love until the End of Time, Love Story, When I Fall in Love, O Sole Mio, Moon River, Cinema Paradiso, Nessun Dorma and Love Changes Everything. Admission: $5.00. In aid of church funds. PAB subscriptions do not apply to this event.
MAYERLING - BALLET, MUSIC BY LISZT
Friday 21 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. - with supper interval 'A tale of drugs, sex, debauchery and madness"! - it's unlikely material for a ballet perhaps, but Mayerling is a powerful and spectacular work that tells the tragic story of the double-death of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary and the 17- year-old Mary Vetsera. It's powerful stuff with never a tutu or a fairy in sight and makes for a riveting and dramatic evening - "not to be missed" was the unanimous view of the critics! Irek Mukhamedov, Viviana Durante, Lesley Collier and Darcey Bussel are among the outstanding cast. 'Kenneth Macmillan's choreography for this haunting tale is transcendent... there are stunning set and costume designs... The Royal Ballet is unbeatably good' [The Times Literary Supplement]. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

PETER MARTENS (CELLO), LUIS MAGALHÃES (PIANO)
Tuesday 25 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.30p.m. Peter Martens and Luis Magalhães have recently recorded all of Beethoven's music for cello and piano in newly prepared editions and in this concert offer four of the sonatas:. Admission: $10.00 / $5.00 [free to Red Carpet members and subscribers] Booking at the Academy
RICHARD STRAUSS: DON QUIXOTE / MAHLER: SYMPHONY NO.7
Thursday 27 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 7.00 p.m.
The Seventh is perhaps Mahler's most extravagant and colourful symphony and has a fitting companion in Richard Strauss's tone p m, a vivid depiction of the adventures of Don Quixote. Admission: $3.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
LAGAAN - ONCE UPON A TIME IN INDIA
Friday 28 October in the Robert Sibson Hall at 6.30 p.m. N.B.TIME!
Champaner... a small farming village in central India. The year is 1893. On the outskirts of the village stands a British cantonment, commanded by Captain Russell, an arrogant and capricious man who wields the power of life and death over the villages under his jurisdiction. When the villagers are unable to pay the crippling land tax due to drought and famine, Russell offers them a challenge: to assemble a team and face the British soldiers in a game of cricket. If the villagers win, the land tax will be waived for three years, but if they lose it will be tripled. The only problem is that the villagers have never heard of cricket before, much less played it... The five- star Bollywood blockbuster was described as "a must for all film-lovers!" and was No.14 on the BBC's list of "50 Films You Must See before You Die"! Admission: $3.00 [free to film members]

BIG THANKS to ENID WRENCH and LESLEY CLIFT for putting the whole show together. To the performers, many of whom had never set foot on a stage before, thankyou for your talent, courage, fun, hardwork and generosity. To the back stage workers whom we never saw but knew you were there.

JERCINOVIC NADA The funeral service for Nada took place on Saturday 8th October at Farley's Chapel, Jason Moyo Street, Bulawayo at 8am. Followed by private internment. Friends are invited to tea at Edith Duly Nursing Home at 10am to celebrate her life and in remembrance of Nada.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to our family, friends and relatives for the support, calls, flowers, love and encouragement on the loss of our dearest grandson, brother and beloved son Bhavik, son of Bharat and Jaishree Ranchod. (Gee's Take Aways).
You have all shared the same grief that we are feeling and it is in this we say you have all made it easier for us to come to terms with our tragic loss.
'l will lend you for a while a child of mine for you to love while he lives, for you to mourn when he is dead. It may be six or seven years or twenty two or three, but will you till l call him back, take care of him for me.'
He will bring his charm to gladden you and should his stay be brief you will have his lovely memories as solace for your grief. I cannot promise his stay, since all from earth must return, nut there are lessons to be taught there, I want this child to learn, I have looked the world over in search for teachers true and from the throngs that crowd life's lanes l have selected you, now will you give him all your love nor think the labor vains, nor hate me when l call him home again.
Dear Lord thy will be done, for all the joy thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we will run, we will shelter him with tenderness, we will love him while we may and for the happiness we have known, forever grateful stay but should the angels call for him sooner that we have planned, we will brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.
Thank you once again

Chipangali is still alive!
We are desperate for help though to cover the day to day costs, and to rebuild Chipangali into the haven it once was. Please help by joining the Chipangali 100 Club, where companies donate $ 100.00 a month which will go into the rebuilding of Chipangali. MEDICAL AID SOCIETY OF CENTRAL AFRICA

MASCA
Response to the article on MASCA in the Morning Mirror on Wednesday 5 October, 2011.
The writer is obviously at liberty to express their views if they feel strongly about the position taken by the Society. However, it is regrettable that despite the numerous visits made to our office, the writer did not seek any audience with me to get an explanation. The decision to limit dealing in cash to was taken after consultation with our auditors, legal advisers, security advisers and insurers. Ironically, on the very same day that the Morning Mirror letter appeared, the Chronicle published an article which vindicates the Society's position.

Before the hyper inflationary era, the Society paid refunds to members and awards to service providers through the cheque system. During that period small amounts were collected in cash and there was never a threat of armed robbery. It was only with the introduction of hard currencies in February 2009, that the Society resorted to dealing in cash. This was to give the banking sector, which suffered heavily during the hyper inflationary era, a chance to rebuild its credibility and resources. Dealing in cash is always with very high risk and numerous problems. It attracts the attention of undesirables who will stop at nothing to gain access to it. We have had a few forced entry burglaries already and we had to be proactive in order to avoid a situation where armed robbers forced their way into the building, threatening life and limb of staff and getting away with your money! The Society would still be expected to honour claims despite the loss!

The banking sector is now stable and able to deal with all the challenges involving cash as it is within their ambit to do so. The Society neither has the technology nor the security levels to deal with large amounts of cash. The position taken is not to inconvenience our valued members but to protect their investment in the Society! The Society has no intention or capacity to re-invent the 'wheel' but is only asking its stakeholders to use the 'wheel' already in place effectively.

It is the duty of the Society's Board and Management to manage the funds entrusted to us prudently and safely. The banks have far better facilities to handle cash and there is no need for our members to queue in banks as they can now again resort to the cheque system that has worked so well in the past. There are other payments methods like 'stop orders' that will ensure that you do not even have to come to our offices.

The Society would like to express its gratitude to all those members and member firms who responded so positively and overwhelmingly to our request! Thank you for your support and we value your membership. The Society will continue to do its best to provide the transparent and efficient service that our stakeholders have grown accustomed to.

J. Sigola October 2011.
Chief Executive MASCA

THE WILDLIFE SOCIETY, Matabeleland Branch is quietly doing a tremendous job in keeping a maintenance check at Hwange National Park, fixing pumps and boreholes and assisting where it can. A second borehole has been drilled at Kennedy pan and cleaning up been carried out at various picnic sites. We have been told that the restaurant at Main Camp which is owned by National Parks is now very well run. Nearer home at Tshabalala Game Sanctuary, WEZ has provided help with the fencing of the area and the game is slowly going back. Financial support has been given to bird life Zimbabwe Black Eagle survey, it is said that Matopos has the highest number of Black eagles in the world in an area the size of Matopos. The same fact is said of the leopard population.

We should all be proud to be living in this cultural and historical heartland of Zimbabwe - the City of Kings. Bulawayo is one of the country's most attractive cities with its pleasing mixture of modern and Victorian architecture, such as the Art Gallery, which gives it a unique character and charm, together with its wide range streets and friendly people. Backpackers, sports teams, international artistes and business delegations are only too happy to return to Bulawayo as they enjoy the warm hospitality and feel relaxed here. What do we have that is special - two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Matopos and Khami Ruins; the Railway Museum, one of the few of its kind in the world dating back to 1897 and the mecca of all steam train enthusiasts who take part in one of the yearly steam train tours organized from United Kingdom; Chipangali Animal Orphanage founded by Viv Wilson, who is recognized in many parts of the world for his study of certain animals such as the shy, rarely seen Duikers; the Amakhosi Cultural Centre, the base of many traditional groups who have received acclaim internationally, viz Black Spear, Black Umfolosi, Sunduza etc. Many young groups have sprung up and could be seen performing at the recent Intwasa Arts Festival KoBulawayo; Zimbabwe's International Trade Fair is sited in Bulawayo; several top sports people, dancers, musicians and artists have been born and educated in Bulawayo before gaining fame overseas. Why The City of Kings you may ask - Bulawayo was the headquarters of Mzilikazi, who is buried in the Matopos, and Lobengula, both legendary Ndebele kings. Therefore 'Let us Go Forward - Si Ye Pambili'

Could we please remind the public that the rainy season is approaching, and the frog season is starting, some strange things are happening, two species of toads are already singing, they are a bit early, and I have had to save a number of Giant Bull Frogs, who normally wait untill the first thunder storms before they start their season. If it is global warming, then we must do everything to help them, and avoid them going extinct. I would particularly ask the public to avoid the giant bull frogs on Cecil Avenue extention between the NUST campus, and the Harry Allan Golf Club, this appears to be a favourite breeding area, and many are killed on the road whilst crossing from one side to the other. If any person would want me to see frogs which they find, I can be contacted on Byo 258147, or email robron@yoafrica.com all times. I am also collecting DNA from animals that have been "Road Killed". As this data is sent to America for analysis. Thank you, and Morning Mirror, once again for you help. Best regards,
Rob Hopkins.

RUSTEAK COTTAGE

Our furniture is uniquely hand made in a little factory nestled in a serene garden in Burnside.

We make a variety of beautiful furniture. Jelly cupboards for the kitchen or bathroom, headboards, tv stands, dining room tables and chairs, room dividers, mirrors, chandelliers, bar tables and stools . Our furniture is very unique and has an artistic flair to it. Must be seen to be appreciated.

We manufacture our furniture out of teak, ilala palm and wrought iron. We have a small nursery and some very different items for the garden. Windmills, bird baths, pennyfarthings for plants, hanging baskets and potted plants and pony tail palms. All this is set in a tranquil garden surrounded by fever trees, fish ponds and very different artifacts. Rusteak Cottage is open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturdays 8am to 1pm. Talk To Heal Counselling for All

We are all human, and being human means that we all have experiences that affect our view of life, depending on the influences we have had. Everyone of us is unique. Often we view ourselves differently to how others view us, we often say how we would like to be and yet avoid the very thing that would bring about this change. We say we are fine and yet this d s not conform to the non verbal behavior we are exhibiting. We say what we want, but at times don't know the first step to take to get what we want and laugh it off. Often we don't think we are important, don't deserve, we justify our hardships and pain, we delay on acting to sort out situations. We are quick to blame others and ourselves, to make judgments, and give up on ourselves. The feeling of self doubt, lack of self worth and negative emotional baggage leads to a poor view on ourselves, resulting in a change of behavior, poor health and an inability to move forward positively. We are human!

Counselling is a process whereby we talk to heal the pains within, to explore out inner selves and potential. There is no magic wand to make things right. It is up to the individual to bring about change for themselves, as the answer lies within. A counselor acts as a facilitator, and through a working, empathic, intuitive relationship enables the client to take the steps they choose. It is what the client brings to the interaction, their thoughts, feelings, experiences and behaviors. It is a model to understand and sift through the content. A process between client and counselor whereby the relationship is built on trust in the strictest confidence.

Counselling is for everyone! No matter how big or small you think your problem may be, what your background, religion, gender, sexuality, age or belief system is, we are all human! Every individual deserves love, respect and an opportunity to heal old and new wounds. I have had several years of experience working in the UK, both privately and through a counseling service. I have covered a wide range of ages, but have mainly worked with young adults, on a one to one basis and in groups. In addition I have facilitated mens groups, creative writing workshops, led outdoor workshops for adolescents and organized healing weekends. I offer the following: Counselling Group Counselling Trauma Support Group Mens Group Writing Workshops If you would like to discuss any of the above please don't hesitate to call me, for counselling an initial assessment is free. Marc McCay is qualified as a Humanistic Integrative Counsellor, and is Accredited though the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. Cell: 0775 940 143 marcmccay@hotmail.com

LIGHTING - NOVELTY

For the upcoming Christmas Carols around town, I have 2 types of battery operated "candles" to hold, one which flickers like a real flame and the other that changes colours - LED's. Stunning to have and weather proof. Can be used as a torch as well.

I also have tea candles which are battery operated and guess what? you can actually blow them out and blow them to switch on. They have a lovely frosted container, which you can remove them from if you so desire. The only colours I have left are Red, Green and Blue. Sorry all yellows sold out!

The other novelty light I have are Ice Cube lights - yes these look like an ice cube, and drop into any liquid, they are activated and can last up to 8 hours. I have used two as samples and they have lasted for over 20 hours and still going strong. All lights can be used in flower arranging, decorating etc - use your imagination. Prices have been reduced to clear the stock and receive more in the new year. Contact Nos: Tracey 0712 - 701 323 or crime@mweb.co.zw CONTINAULLY LONG POWER CUTS - YOU NEED EMERGENCY LIGHTS In order to make life more safer and comfortable during these exceptionally long power cuts, and we know fuel is getting more expensive to run generators. I have been approached to advertise LED lights, imported from South Africa along with a battery and battery charger, 100 m of cable, and pull switches. WE have catered for a budget house = US$ 400 and a 3 bedroomed house = US$ 820. It can be a do-it-yourself kit. The cost will vary depending on what lights you want, but if you are interested in seeing the effects, I am getting my own house illuminated with them. There are 1.5 W, 3 W and 6 W lights which are adequate and draw an extremely small amount of amps off of the battery, thereby making the battery last for years. I have gone to the extent of obtaining a bigger battery so that I can fit my alarm on and the lights and even run an invertor if necessary, as I am tired of changing the small 12 V alarm battery every 2.5 months! If you are interested in the above, please do not hesitate to contact me on email or cell and I will pass the information onto the supplier. Just using one 3 W as a test, has not only brightened up the home but given me ideas as to where to put them outside so that I don't come home in the dark and it certainly has calmed my little ones down a great deal, enabling them to even read as the light is so bright. I am only too happy to have lights that will last for many, many years to come. Longer strips up to 18 W or more can be supplied for factories, thereby cutting down your electrical costs a great deal.
Only genuine interested parties to please contact me. Contact Nos: Tracey 0712 - 701 323 or crime@mweb.co.zw

APOLOGIES AS THE MIRROR WAS DONE IN HASTE AS I HAVE BEEN HAVING A WONDERFUL TIME WITH MY DAUGHTER FROM OZ !!

Statement by Zesa Got any power? Got any water? Got any explanations that make sense? Maybe this one d s. The statement below is from the Chairman of the Zimbabwe Power Company.

Chairman's Statement Zimbabwe Power Company 2nd October 2011 (10pm)

Starting with the end in Mind

It is important that customers are regularly informed of the stark reality of generation capacity in Zimbabwe. If the facts are understood then it is up to each individual to assess how best they can cope going forward into the next four to five years. There has been no meaningful investment in additional power since the 1980's - 25years! Over the past two and a half decades there has been major growth in our population as well as a population drift to the urban areas.
The demand for power is around 1,800 MW at daily peak and this is growing. Local installed operational capacity today is around 1,200 MW - so we have a gap of 30%. As ZPC implement their program to stabilise and optimise the generation capacity at all its stations over the next 12 months the supply will increase to 1,500 MW - but in the meantime demand will continue to increase. The ONLY way to close this gap is to install additional capacity and the shortest timeline to achieve this is four years. So I urge all customers and stakeholders to understand this and take whatever steps they can to mitigate against this stunted power capacity.
I suggest that an Energy Forum is established amongst major customer groups to facilitate dialogue around this critical aspect of life in Zimbabwe. We need to seek solutions that will help address this shortage: remove duties on solar power equipment, remove duties on low energy power devices, change the building by-laws to insist that all middle and high income new houses use solar geysers, insist that new mines install solar systems in their housing and other water heating processes etc. Most importantly to engage in a national education campaign on how to be more economical in our power usage.

Other power producers need to be encouraged to enter the market. Licenses have been issued but it seems there is little appetite to invest, why? We need to debate these issues.
An Update on Capacity Expansion
Kariba and Hwange
There has been a very positive response to the 'Expression of Interest' for the expansion at both Kariba and Hwange. The 'Expressions of Interest' closed in mid-September and our team of Hatch, KPMG Consortium and management are reviewing the documents before making recommendations to the State Procurement Board. This will then be followed by a formal tender to prequalified companies.
To ensure that the momentum is maintained it is vital that the Independent Regulator is put in place outside of the Ministry and that this new body engenders the confidence of potential investors.
Small Thermals
WAPCOS (an Indian consultancy group in the power sector) will finish the feasibility studies to re-power the boilers at the small thermal stations. We then intend looking for funding / joint venture partners to help us carry out these upgrades.
Recent History and the Current Situation The month of September has not been a good month for ZPC and hence for you, the customer. Many of us over the last week have experienced up to five consecutive days of load shedding from 5am to 10pm. Why?
Before I continue, it is important to note that ZETDC (Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company) hold the balancing of supply and demand / (load shedding) responsibility. They have a load shedding plan which is in turn based on their expectation of power supply from ZPC as well regional power utilities. ZETDC are forced to deviate from this plan when there is a sudden loss of power from their suppliers - power generation outages at times occur without warning and this throws out the planned load shedding regime.
In writing this statement I will endeavour to give facts, to not be defensive yet not shy away from giving news that you need to hear. There are four main themes that run through the low generation this month and particularly over the last 10 days, namely: sluggish and below par (in my view) performance of the Original Equipment Manufacturers ( M), underperformance of the procurement and logistic chain (both in-house and external suppliers), ongoing cash flow challenges (ZPC have only received approximately 80% payment this year for the energy it has generated and sent out, as payment of imports are given precedence) and finally the ongoing occurrence of regional power swings( surges) into our transmission systems where protection is insufficiently robust.
Some Detail If detail is not what you want please skip to the next section.
Kariba Power Station
This station has been generating at full capacity for much of the last two years except for planned shut downs. In June this year a failure occurred in the generator winding of Unit 2. These are copper windings as thick as one's arm. It can only be replaced by the M who had to design and outsource the replacement section. During this outage a crack was found in one of the turbine blades which only the M can repair. This repair work is under way and is scheduled for completion before mid- October. In my view the M did not, and could not be encouraged to, respond to our crisis with the urgency demanded by our unique situation or with the respect that a 30 year relationship deserves. Our MD has been in Europe this week to discuss this with the M. During the week ending 25th September the protection on Units 3 and 4 tripped. Unit 4 was isolated from the transformer which it shares with Unit 3. Unit 3 was then brought back into service. After meticulous trouble shooting it was found that switch gear and control devices, which were replaced by another M during our maintenance shut downs earlier this year, had failed. Repairs to these devices are underway under guidance of the M from Europe. So in summary Kariba has been down to four units for the last 10 days withthe station expected to return to full capacity by mid- October.
Hwange Power Station
As I have mentioned in prior statements there is a significant amount of work still required to stabilise this station not the least of which is the Ash Disposal section of the process. As money becomes available we go totender against a prioritised schedule of replacement components - some of which have lead times of up to one year! We have lost the four Phase One (smaller) units over the last week to 10 days. Unit 1 due to the failure of the 'Boiler Feed Pump' which is new and under warranty, Unit 2 due to a the failure of its thrust bearing, Unit 3 due to wear on its induction fans caused by the under-performing de-ashing system and Unit 4 due to the failure of its 'Boiler Feed Pump'. To exacerbate the situation the entire station was taken out by a surge out of Eskom (S.A) on Tuesday 27th September. At time of writing this statement we now have two Phase Two (larger) units and one Phase One(smaller) unit feeding the grid. We expect to bring another unit back overnight (Sunday) and the fifth by Wednesday this week.
Small Thermal Stations
These stations are situated in Bulawayo, Harare and Munyati. Our major constraint in maintaining modest outputs from these stations continues to be the availability of coal from our three suppliers. All three suppliers assure us that their production will improve over the next two months. Should this not be the case we will have to consolidate and probably run only two of the three stations. In the middle of this week NRZ went on strike. I must commend our management team and coal suppliers for their rapid response to this event. They mobilised over 40 trucks to haul the coal that was to move by rail. The next 12 months Major retrofitting and component replacement projects will continue over the next 12 months. WAPCOS (the Indian company that provides expert advice at Hwange) have provided an experienced project manager to help oversee these projects at Hwange. To execute these projects there will be extended planned outages of units on a sequential basis during the year ahead. For example the precipitators (ash handling) on Phase Two will be retrofitted over the next seven months therefore from the middle of October until May 2012 and one of the Phase two Units will be offline. At Kariba the system that governs the turbine blades, in sympathy to the power demand, will be replaced on each unit (six weeks per unit) on a sequential schedule. This means that from mid-December until September 2012 only five of the six units will be online.
In addition, over the next 12 months, other units will need to be taken off line for shorter periods to undertake unit specific upgrades or repairs. There will also be the exogenous breakdowns.
So in summary the power supply regime will for the next 12 months will be much the same as it has been for the last 12 months - all in a bid to stabilise and optimise supplies in the medium term. The refurbishment of the 40km pipeline from the Zambezi to the Hwange station remains a priority and is a one year project. The feasibility study was completed over two months ago and we await the outcome of possible of government-to-government funding with the government of India.
The Tariff
I wish to thank all stakeholders for their understanding on the need for a revised tariff after two and a half years of stagnation. The power w s of today are largely attributable to many years of suppressed earnings by this power utility. To have continued this trend would surely have led us into total darkness. Sadly this increase in tariff as of 1st October will not translate into immediate improvements in the availability of power. Lead times for retrofitting projects can be many months. Of equal importance is the positive message that this sends to investors: 'Zimbabweans are prepared to pay for their power.' I urge all of you to take personal responsibility for your power usage. There seems to be a misapprehension that load shedding automatically results in a dramatic reduction in your power usage and hence cost. This will not be the case if you do not manage your consumption. While you sleep the power comes back onand heats geysers, runs fridges and pumps etc.
Board
The board of ZPC remains committed to its responsibilities for the company whose performance is critical to the economy of this country. We see our role as more than one of oversight and governance. We therefore spend time in mentorship roles as well as bringing our diverse skill-sets and experience to bear at an operational level when the situation demands. Arriving at solutions to the complex challenges that have been imposed on the company over the years (lack of investment in new capacity, foregone maintenance of existing infrastructure etc.) requires a team effort. We have commissioned the 'Institute of Directors Zimbabwe' to undertake a performance review of the ZPC board.
In Closing
I hope reading this statement improves your understanding of recent events and the challenges that all of us will face in the medium term - until additional generation capacity is installed. It is essential that we find ways to hold dialogue across all walks of life on this key economic driver and household resource.
R. Maasdorp
Chairman ZPC
