He was just coming up to 81. For many years, of course, he ran the College of Music with great success and likewise the Harare City Orchestra. I'm sure all Zimbabweans will want to join in sending condolences to Neil's many family members and to let them know he was held in the highest regard for his warmth, his friendliness and especially for his great musical abilities. R.I.P. Neil, gone but never forgotten. Geoffrey Atkins +++++ How sad I am to read today of the passing of Joy Ketts. Looking back over my school years in Bulawayo, there were certain teachers who left an indelible impression on me. Joy Ketts was certainly one of them. She was my Std. 3 teacher at Moray Road in 1959, and I always remember her as being kind, caring and dedicated to her pupils beyond measure. She rode her bicycle to school, and as I remember was one of the first members of staff to arrive in the morning and one of the last to leave the school at the end of each day. She coached netball in the afternoon and ran a Scripture Union group. I know that the Biblical principles she taught have stayed with me to this day. But one thing for which I have been eternally grateful for was Joy’s love of anything to do with needle and knitting crafts. Her needle work club was one of my delights! She taught me to do stencil embroidery on Irish linen cloths, cross stitch and binca work, and perfected the hand sewing and knitting my mom and gran had already taught me. I have a 1950’s walky-talky doll which to this day is dressed in the hand stitched outfit she helped me with. The outfit was entered into both the Bulawayo and Salisbury Agricultural Show competitions, as were several tray cloths I embroidered. I did not win a prize for my doll’s outfit but over the years had more luck with several tray cloths. I am sure I still have one or two in my possession. But I am sure Joy’s greatest achievement with me was lifting my performance the year I sat in front of her from somewhere near the bottom of the class to a lofty 5th! Was I ever so proud! I did not keep contact with Joy after primary school, but feel her passing as the cutting of another tie to my early life in Bulawayo. May Joy rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord she loved.
