FOR BABY BOOMERS ONLY

Old age, I have decided, is a gift.

I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body ... the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror, but I don't agonise over those things for long.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less grey hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself.

I've become my own friend.

I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to overeat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with ageing.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m, and sleep until noon

I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love ... I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the bikini set.

They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten ... and I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. I can say "no", and mean it. I can say "yes", and mean it.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day.

See you there!

Upcoming Events at the Museum

Friends of Museum AGM at The Grange 4th May 14.30 for 15.00
Possibly the oldest surviving building in modern Bulawayo is Dawson's Store, part of the historical centre that became The Grange Hotel. Built in the 1880s, it was a trading post run by James Dawson in the 'Whiteman's Town' next to King Lobengula's royal capital of Bulawayo [eMahlabathini]. During the Anglo-Ndebele War of 1893 most Europeans took flight in the immediate months prior to the conflict. However, two men remained, staunch friends of the King - William Filmer Usher and James Fairbairn. With the destruction of the Ndebele capital as British South Africa Company forces advanced, these two men took refuge on the roof of Dawson's store, the only substantial brick building remaining. Protected by the word of the King, there they remained until the invading forces arrived. This building, although modified in the last 126 years, remains and we will be entertained by several talks on the events and personalities involved in this and later history of this site and the SauersTown suburb.
Directions:-. The Grange - northern end of Kenilworth Road, Sauers Town. For those who don't know where this is take the Victoria Falls Road, turn right at the old Portuguese Club onto Jacaranda Avenue. Cross the stream and take the second road to the left [Kenilworth]. Proceed straight to the very end where there is a gate leading off to the left with a sign The Grange.
Bring chairs and refreshments. Join the Friends and Support the museum. All welcome.

THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO
ALL EVENTS IN THE ROBERT SIBSON HALL

'The Note' coffee shop is open before all Academy evening events for supper - and there's usually a special dish on Fridays. Booking is NOT required but is always helpful!

THURSDAYS 2, 9 & 16 MAY AT 7.00 P.M. BODYGUARD
Hit BBC drama 'Bodyguard' kept an average 10.4 million viewers on tenterhooks and no BBC drama has drawn a bigger audience since Doctor Who, whose Christmas Day episode i08. The six-part series (to be shown over three weeks) spotlights a British Home Secretary and the man assigned to protect her.David Budd (Richard Madden), a military veteran who fought in the Middle East, prevents a suicide bomber from blowing up a train, allowing the arrest of the terrorists who planned the attack: due to his heroic act, he's promoted to the role of bodyguard for Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), a conservative and controversial minister whose politics stand for everything he despises.
'Bodyguard' has become the most watched BBC drama since 2008 and it is easy to see why. Clever, tense and gripping, it has provided excellent entertainment. [Independent]
'Riveting... I had to remind myself to breathe.' [The Daily Telegraph]
'Starting with a suicide bomb attack and only becoming more breathless, this was edge-of-the-seat, shush-the-family fare.' [Daily Express]
Admission: $4.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 3 MAY AT 7.00 P.M. BERNSTEIN CONDUCTS HAYDN / CONCERT FROM THE THEĀTRE ANTIQUE D'ORANGE
Bernstein's interpretations of Haydn's symphonies have consistently met with unreserved critical acclaim. He, of all conductors, possessed precisely the qualities which Haydn s music requires: grace, charm and a generous measure of wit, this last quality especially.notable in this performance of Symphony No.88. The Korean conductor-pianist Myung-Whun Chung then conducts the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in the magical setting of the Theātre Antique in Orange. Martha Argerich and Nicholas Angelich join the orchestra for this concert-homage - which includes Saint-Saens' Organ Symphony - to its conductor of many years.
'Haydn is eternal; and to hear his music played like this with such palpable love is always a treat.' [Gramophone]
'Best performance of the Poulenc concerto for two pianos ever. The performance [of the symphony] had incredible passion, the orchestra played the music brilliantly.' [Amazon]
Admission: $4.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

FRIDAY 10 MAY AT 7.00 P.M. JOHN CRANKO'S ONEGIN - BALLET TO MUSIC BY TCHAIKOVSKY:
John Cranko s mastery of the art of the pas de deux finds its climax in Onegin, one of the most successful full length ballets of the 20th century. Set to sweeping music by Tchaikovsky, it tells Pushkin s tragic love story of the world-weary aristocrat Onegin and the naive country girl Tatiana in a superbly nuanced way.
'Onegin is so good, that it can easily hold its own against any Broadway show!' [Newsday]
'A hugely enjoyable performance of what many see as John Cranko s masterpiece.' [MusicWeb International]
'John Cranko's Onegin is one of the great ballerina vehicles.' [Telegraph]
Admission: $4.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

FRIDAY 17 MAY AT 7.00 P.M. THE SOUND OF MUSIC
The Sound of Music hardly needs any introduction and is being shown again after several requests - willingly! Take your choice from the reviews!
' ...romantic nonsense and sentiment.' [New York Times]
'Icky sticky... designed for the five to seven set and their mommies.' [New York Herald Tribune]
OR!
'Three hours of visual and vocal brilliance.' [Los Angeles Times]
'This artful crowd-pleaser continues to reach out to every generation, thanks to expert and unsentimental handling from director Robert Wise and a magnificent performance from Julie Andrews.' [Radio Times]
'The Sound of Music has one of Rodgers and Hammerstein s best scores, and that s saying something. It s a warm and wonderful movie that has "timeless" written all over it.' [Movie Metropolis]
Admission: $4.00 [free to Red Carpet members]
