HOOLIGANS AT SUNRISE

During sunrise this morning I was drinking a cup of tea and gazing at nothing in particular out of the window. For some reason I started thinking about a time when I was on the bus on my way home from school one day. I was getting ready to alight the bus at my usual stop .

The bus was full and I was sitting next to an old man who stared out of the window all the way down the road.

At one point, he gave a long, sad, sigh. His breath was so deep and heartfelt that its outward emanation touched me. I looked over at the man. His eyes were tired and watery. Staring out of the window, he was so lost in thought, he didn't notice me looking at him.

I felt I needed to say something.

'Excuse me,' I said. 'Are you okay '

He turned and looked at me. 'Oh,' he said patting me on the arm with a sweet smile. 'I'm fine, thank you. I was just daydreaming about being a kid. I grew up around here and sometimes I long for those carefree days.'

Thinking about him now, I fully understand his deep longing and, as I drink my tea, I find myself thinking about my own childhood:

I remember..

We would play for hours on the koppie behind our house. Our parents would say, 'You're irritating us, go out and play before we have a conniption fit!' (Defined in the dictionary as a fit of rage or hysterics.)

And play we did. My goodness we played hard! We played war or stingers or skop die blik or cowboys and crooks pull down your broeks. (No, I will not explain that one to you!)

We spent hours outside. We played Tok-tokkie (knocking on someone's door and running away), we played cricket in the street using an old tomato box as wickets. The postman sometimes played wicket keeper for a few minutes as he made his rounds. He would say, 'I want to play the wickedly ticket,' and he'd crouch behind the tomato box for a few over's.

We played with dingbats and yoyo's and woer-woer's and katty's and sand clods with nary a parent in sight. (Imagine kids throwing sand clods or kleilat's at each other in this modern day and age They would have to wear helmets, protective glasses and football pads.)

We played moerball, swingball and dodgeball and used the circular washing line to swing around on.

I remember..

We got covered in black jacks and mud and dust and doorings. We had mulberry stains on our mouths and feet and always had a few marbles, Sugus, Licorice All Sorts, Three X mints, Jelly Tots and Lion matches (to set things on fire) in our pockets.

I remember..

We climbed trees, koppies, fences, onto roof's and into drains and donga's. We pegged Bicycle cards onto our choppers and played peggy with a knife or a screw driver. We climbed onto the roofs of the shops in the area.

We put potato's in people's exhaust pipes, whistled through a piece of grass or an acorn doppie, caught tadpoles in the spruit and kept them in jars in our room until they smelled to high heaven and our mom threw them out. (With a disgusted look on her face.)

I remember..

We played cards and Monopoly and Cluedo and most of all we played the fool.

On November 5th we made a guy and put him in a wheelbarrow and gleefully danced around him as he burned. How bizarre!

We said things like, 'Inky pinky ponkey daddy bought a donkey. Donkey died daddy cried. Inky pinky ponkey.' How bizarre!

We sang, 'Skinny malinky long legs vrot banana feet, went to the bioscope and couldn't find a seat, he sat on a lady and out popped the baby, skinny malinky long legs vrot banana feet.' (Or a variation thereof.) How bizarre!

Back in my day we uttered things like:

'Here comes the bride, all dressed in white, she slipped on a banana skin and broke her spine.'

'I'm the king of the castle and you're the dirty rascal.'

'One potato, two potato, three potato, four, five potato, six potato, seven potato more.'

'Finders keepers, losers weepers.'

'Ask your mother for a sixpence to see the big giraffe with freckles on his nose and pimples on his..ask you mother for a sixpence.'

'What's the time, half past nine, hang your broekies on the line.'

I remember..

As the sun set, you would hear all the neighbourhood dad's calling for their kids to come in for dinner. And out of the veld and bushes and trees and dongas and drains came us naughty rascals, dirty, smelly, satiated, played-out and content little ruffians, ready for a bath and dinner. And then a bit of Mark Saxon and Serge or Squad Cars, or Pick a Box on the radio, and then the deepest of deep sleeps after a hard day at play.

As I sit here drinking tea and gazing out of the window at nothing in particular, I feel a very strong, almost painful yearning for those carefree days of my youth. It seems the further I get from it, the more I long for that time in my life.

I really miss the little hooligan I once was.

2) Notices and Events

ALL EVENTS IN THE ROBERT SIBSON HALL
THE ACADEMY AND PERFORMING ARTS BULAWAYO

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Another golden oldie, this one only 59 years old, first released in 1960! A Mexican village is being terrorized by the bandit Calvera (Eli Wallach) and his gun blazing goons. Seven American mercenaries are hired to protect the village. The group trains the townsfolk in gunplay as a trap is set for Calvera. The bandits suffer casualties after a raid, but they regroup to capture the seven gunmen. Yul Brenner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Horst Buchholz, James Coburn and Brad Dexter star as the seven guns who must escape wrath of their captor Calvera. The story is taken from the Japanese film Seven Samurai which served as a blueprint for this near classic Western saga.
'There is a heap of fine acting and some crackling good direction by John Sturges.' [Variety]
'The Magnificent Seven' has a secure niche among the great westerns. Its action is brilliantly staged. [Philadelphia Inquirer]
'If it's not the greatest Western ever made, it's certainly in the top three. This is the movie that made Steve McQueen a star.' [Countingdown.com]
Admission: $6.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 9 AUGUST AT 7.00 P.M. DONIZETTI: LA FILLE DU REGIMENT
Joan Sutherland takes the lead in Donizetti's comic opera 'La Fille du Regiment', written towards the end of his 1838-40 stay in Paris. It quickly became popular and remained in the Opera-Comique repertory for years, with 1,000 performances given between 1840 and 1908.
Joan Sutherland plays Marie who was found on a battlefield as a baby, and raised by the entire 21st Regiment as their 'daughter'. Her foster-father Sulpice has decreed that she should marry a soldier from the Regiment. When Marie falls for the Tyrolean Tonio, it looks as though she may have to choose between her 'family' and true love - and then her true identity is discovered adding further complications!
'A lively and picturesque production of a romantic comedy.' [Sydney Morning Herald]
'Sutherland once again produced that glittering unmistakable brilliance of sound.' [Canberra Times]
Admission: $6.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

THURSDAY 15 AUGUST AT 7.00 P.M. BLACK SWAN
'Black Swan' revolves around a production of Tchaikovsky's 'Swan Lake' by the prestigious New York City Ballet company. The production requires a ballerina to play the innocent and fragile White Swan, for which the committed dancer Nina (Natalie Portman) is a perfect fit, as well as the dark and sensual Black Swan, which are qualities better embodied by the new arrival Lily (Mila Kunis). Nina is overwhelmed by a feeling of immense pressure when she finds herself competing for the part, causing her to descend into a living nightmare.
Natalie Portman won an Oscar or her performance and the film won several major awards.
'Black Swan' is a full-bore melodrama, told with passionate intensity, gloriously and darkly absurd. It centres on a performance by Natalie Portman that is nothing short of heroic. [Chicago Sun Times]
You'll never see 'Swan Lake' in quite the same light again. [Daily Express]
While the film is near-perfect, it's a tribute to Portman that she outshines everyone else as the frail, brittle ballerina who is slowly but surely losing it. [Daily Mirror ]
Admission: $6.00 [free to Film members]

FRIDAY 16 AUGUST AT 7.00 P.M. TCHAIKOVSKY: SWAN LAKE
After 'Black Swan', what could there be but 'Swan Lake''! This new production by Liam Scarlett features additional choreography whilst remaining faithful to Petipa and Ivanov's classic. John Macfarlane's opulent designs provide an atmospheric, period setting for this enthralling love story, illuminated by Tchaikovsky's magnificent score. Marianela Nuņez brings both poignancy and glitter to the dual role of Odette / Odile, with Vadim Muntagirov as the yearning Prince Siegfried.
'What a magnificent achievement this is. The young choreographer Liam Scarlett has given Covent Garden its first new 'Swan Lake' in 30 years, and it's a winner, big, bold and beautiful.' [The Times]
Leading the magnificent cast were Marianela Nuņez and Vadim Muntagirov, fast becoming the Royal's dream partnership. While Nuņez is never less than exceptional, the evening belonged to Muntagirov, who even managed to outshine the famous 32 fouettes with a series of whip-fast pirouettes of his own. [Standard]
Proper tutus; gorgeous designs; first-rate dancing. [The Spectator]
Marianela Nuņez was extraordinary in the dual role of Odette and Odile. [The Arts Desk]
Admission: $6.00 [free to Red Carpet members]

My family are Ben and Betty Wood, and one brother Owen. We lived in former Rhodesia 1946-1960, then in South Africa for many years.

Canon Humphrey Pugh

We are doing a short book on our parish history and are writing a chapter on some of the parishioners who traveled from the Parish Church of St Chrysostoms in Manchester in the UK and worked as missionaries in the then Rhodesia. One such person was Canon Humphrey Pugh who was a curate in the parish of St John Chrysostom but emigrated and ended up as Dean of Bulawayo Anglican Cathedral. We understand that sadly both he and his wife Eve passed on but we understand there is a possibility that some family members- Anthea and Peter Nash might still be in Zimbabwe living possibly in Bulawayo or Filabusi. We are therefore sending this message to you in the off chance that you might know them and might be able able to help us make contact with them if they would like to be contacted to share some of the missionary work Canon Pugh did in then Rhodesia. I am a Zimbabwean myself now settled here in Manchester and have been working with the current incumbent Canon Ian Gomersall to map some of the activities of people who lived here in Victoria Park and have gone abroad across the continent. For Zimbabwe Canon Pugh is one of them. Another is a Mrs Molly Adam who ended up as principal at St Aidan in Mbembesi.
